Questions & Answers

Do you need internet/wifi in order to use this thermostat?

Asked by salportland December 8, 2020

Yes. You need wifi. The nest can be adjusted at the thermostat once it is set up but to program it you need to be able to connect with it through the app and for that you need WiFi.

does this work on 5.0 internet and will it work with a laptop

Asked by dennis December 25, 2020

I looked into this when I started buying smart devices. Unless you have insanely fast internet speed like 500mbps or 1gbps, the 5.0 network is less efficient at further distances without wifi boosters placed around your home. If you have a dual band router you can switch it to 2.4 ghz pretty easily if you need to.

I have Gas / baseboard heating ... can I use this to replace my old Honeywell thermostats?

Asked by Jeannette November 6, 2020

Most likely yes. The heating source isn’t the issue, but the electrical current.

Does this work with line voltage?

Asked by KP January 1, 2021

Depends on what is meant by line voltage. It operates from the low voltage circuit from the unit, not 110VAC from a hose hold circuit.

Since it is a Google product, will it work with an IPhone?

Asked by RB November 21, 2020

YES. NEST APP is universal.

How many wires?

Asked by Mcswigs January 8, 2021

Nest Thermostat comes with a 6 cm color LCD with 240x320 resolution, and mirrored glass finish. It provides 10 wiring terminals that work with most 24V heating and cooling systems. You can check this link for the Nest Thermostat technical specifications:

Will this thermostat (Nest GA02081-US) work for a 2-zone, heat only gas boiler (baseboard) that c...

Asked by Al November 18, 2020

You will need a C wire. Most likely your unit has a terminal which supplies constant voltage, which this unit requires. Just run a third wire from there to the C terminal. (It will show ~28V AC output whether the other wires are on or off). You might have to figure it out by trial and error like I did, but there is a C terminal even if it's not connected to anything. A voltmeter is handy for this.

Does this thermostat require a “c” wire?

Asked by Nick November 5, 2020

Yes it requires a c wire

Is this item Alexa compatible?

Asked by SQ November 1, 2020

Yes, the new Nest Thermostat is compatible with Alexa. You can check the following link for more info:

How to have Nest wake display? Nest won’t wake on approach or touch, even though settings are cor...

Asked by Zerokool November 8, 2020

To preserve battery energy, Wake on Approach will not activate unless you have a Common (C) wire is installed. Instead, the display will use Wake on Touch, that activates your Nest Thermostat display when the touch sensor is triggered. We recommend having a Common (C) wire installed if you want to have the Wake on Approach feature activated. This feature can be turned on or off on the Google Home app.

I love the extra savings!
Customer review from Google LLC logo
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love my Nest Thermostat G2. This thermostat was easy to install but it requires a C-wire which I had. I love the sleek stylish look this thermostat has. I am definitely impressed with how the Nest thermostat can turn itself down to save energy and money. I’ve definitely noticed a decrease in my energy bill which is fantastic! I really enjoy the extra functionality of the Google Home App when I’m away from home. This is a great high quality product. I’m definitely happy with this product and the savings this thermostat has given me. I definitely recommend this.

Great product. Set up a bit tricky.
Customer review from Google LLC logo
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I had this thermostat installed by a professional because I don’t have any electric experience. It was a quick installation, he had No issues. It looks very slick! The set up on the app was a bit tricky. A lot of questions, a lot of steps to go through. Although we set it all up, after reviewing the app later I realized there are so many little things you need to make sure are set up correctly, otherwise the thermometer will drop the temp down to 60 in the middle of the night. Yea. This happened to us. I just really think there’s a bit too much to the set up. It’s easy to miss the basic set up because there are so many options within options within options that need to be set up. Besides the set up on the app, I do like the product. You can change the temperature on the actual thermostat by simple touch or on the app as I mentioned above. It looks very nice. I’m just waiting for my trim kit cover to arrive so I can make it look even better. The cover does not come with the product.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nest Thermostat G2 - Charcoal is great! Great quality and easy to install. I love the app. If I feel hot or cold I can adjust the temp without getting out of bed or off the couch. This is especially great when I am in the basement or upstairs. Very convenient!

Easy to use and A huge money savings thermostat
Customer review from Google LLC logo
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This Charcoal nest thermostat works so much better then ours that the builder installed on our custom home 5 years ago. Because I was having my heater/AC units serviced for the year when this arrived in the mail I had the technician install it for us . Doesn’t mean you can’t do it yourself, you can. I was already paying a specialist to check my unit so why not. He did say it was very easy to install. We enjoy that we can connect through the app remotely to control the temperatures when we’re at work or away out of town for days at a time. It does learn your habits and adjusts the temperature for it. It lights up when your near it. This is our first time ever using a smart thermostat. Always been slow with getting new gadgets when they hit the market but now I wished I would have made the plunge years ago how much this is going to save on energy costs for my family.

This 2020 version is horrible. Buy the old version so much better
This updated version is just awful to use. Sometimes you leave things as they are when they are fine. This updated version is very hard to use. Instead of the dial rotating you slide your finger on the outside of the disk Not easy to do. You set up is through app only. The wiring is very temperamental. I had the wires connected and no errors but the heat would not go on. After two hours with the nest tech and re seating the wires three times it finally worked. I did not get an error message like the old model. Also the nest room sensors do not work with this new version. Home depot sold them both to me today and the nest tech had no idea either until he contact level 2 support to tell me that the don't work and they are coming out with new sensor next month. Buy their older version if you can find one. I am going to and return this junk.. And of course the back plate of the older model does not work with this so called upgrade because that would make sense.

Hi TonyB,

We appreciate your feedback on the Nest Thermostat. We're sorry to learn your experience has been a difficult one and the new Nest Thermostat didn't meet your expectations.

The Nest Temperature Sensor is not compatible with the new Nest Thermostat and currently there is no plans for a temperature sensor designed to work with the new Nest Thermostat.

If you'd like any help with your Google Nest products, we'd be more than happy to assist you here: Nest
Buy the Learning Thermostat instead
If you’ve ever used the Nest Learning Thermostats you will be extremely disappointed with this model. I have 3 Nest Learning Thermostats (and at one point had the less expensive “E” version) and everything about this one is significantly cheaper in comparison. There is no turning dial, the screen is really just a small square and you can see the borders in the display (see photo), and the Google home app is far inferior to the Nest app. Even when you adjust the temperature the new sound it makes is irritating. I really hope this isn’t the path that Nest thermostats are heading and that this iteration is just a fluke. I had intended to switch over my mom’s old simple thermostats with this one because of a rebate offered by our electric company, but she’s in her 60’s and the lack of a dial would make adjusting the temperature much too difficult. As far as the C wire debate: in my experience the C wire is not needed when your thermostat controls both heating and cooling. In some cases when the thermostat controls ONLY heating or ONLY cooling then a C wire may be needed.

Good..but a little tricky setting up.
It took me much longer to set up than I anticipated. I have a Honeywell thermostat and decided to update with this one and like being able to control it from an app. I hooked it up and nothing. I couldn't get it to scan that miniscule QR code with my phone. I didn't realize also that the code to enter manually is on that same QR code. When I finally got the display it gave me error code E260 which is no power to Y1. Basically it meant my furnace wouldn't turn on. I re-hooked up the old thermostat to make sure the furnace would still work and it worked fine. I came close to returning the Nest thermostat at this point. My thermostat only contains 4 wires so there isn't a common wire. I found out that you can run the green wire to the common. (One video showed that you had to change the green on the furnace also). I didn't have to do the latter. It seems to work fine so far. I'm running it either manually or with the Google Home app and just tell it to turn on/off the heat. I can also just say " Hey Google" turn the heat up to 70 or such. I work from home so I don't think I'd really use the Nest app that much anyway. Another thing that I don't like is that it doesn't come with the back plate to cover up the area where the old thermostat was. If you want that you have to order the .50 piece of plastic for $14.99. Really? Thankfully my utility company is currently offering a $75 rebate or I probably wouldn't have tried this. I think I will like it in the long run though. Don't throw away your old thermostat though just in case and take a picture of your wiring diagram before you take it apart.
