A bit disappointed.
I used this for the first time in the summer of 2020. I bought this because I fired my contractor who was going to charge us $11,000 to paint a very large living room with 14ft high ceilings along with a kitchen tied in. Since we were going to save $11K I thought, "Why not spend $500 to help me get the job done quicker? More on "quicker" later. Although I never used an airless sprayer before my results came out pretty good for the first time. But I think that had to do with using flat paint. When using paints with more sheen I noticed I was having issues and inconsistent results. I'll explain more as you read on. The problem was/is that I live in the hot dry desert of southern California. What this means is that the extreme lack of humidity really has an effect on painting. This is not limited to spraying, this also poses problems for rolling the paint on. In fact, the second and probably more important reason why I wanted to try a sprayer was because I was having HORRIBLE results with a roller when painting our new home in the desert for the first time. As I applied my paint with a roller, it almost instantly dried and I could not smooth out my lap marks which was terribly frustrating. To give some perspective, I have painted professionally in other areas with milder climates such as the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest and always had flawless even results with roller applications. I was having a similar problem with this sprayer. But instead of lap marks in rows I could see a definite inconsistent dull haze mixed with either the satin or semi-gloss sheen I was using. After calling customer support (their phone number is conveniently located on the Graco motor body) the rep I spoke to couldn't help but said someone would get back to me. The next day someone did and left a detailed voicemail explaining that what was happening was that the spray was "atomizing" (I believe this is the word he used) and literally drying in the air while being expelled from the spray tip before it hit the ceiling and walls to be painted. And this is what resulted in an uneven looking finish. This seems to be the least noticeable with dead flat sheens and gets worse the shinier the sheen of paint you use. The other disappointment I've come to learn about this sprayer is that it is NOT very good at painting rough textured exterior stucco walls. There are many different types of stucco. Unfortunately, I have the worse kind when it comes to painting. It's almost like a grainy sandy rough coral texture. I'm trying to paint my house a soft eggshell white. The color I'm going over is a sandy brownish tan color. It's not completely covering the old paint and my end result just looks dirty. Like a house that gets dirty over time that needs a good power washing. The only way I'm getting any decent results is by using a 1 and 1/4 inch super heavy nap roller to roll the paint on after I sprayed it on. Only then do I have a fresh solid color. I just looked at my spray tip to learn that I have the 515 spray tip. Not sure which spray tip would be best for my specific needs but before knowing what spray tip I had I called customer support again for this issue and he seemed to have no idea what I was talking about (in terms of how difficult it is to paint that heavy textured coral like textured walls). He recommended spray tips 515 and 517. So, after hanging up with customer support I then went to look at the spray tip number on my sprayer. After discovering that it was 515 (one of two that customer support recommended for my stucco walls) I have to admit, by this point I lost all confidence in what the rep at Graco just told me and am gun shy to spend another $30 on a tip that may not do the job. Even though you save time spraying as opposed to rolling you spend a ton of time taping up and covering everything in a room where you don't want the spray to go. It may have only taken me 30 minutes to paint a 20x25 room with a 14ft high pitch in the ceiling (both walls and ceiling were painted the same color which made it easier and faster for me). But the day before it took me over eight hours to tape everything up. I was so sick of taping the windows, cabinets and flooring with plastic. God, I was sick of it! And in a couple areas I was not very thorough and the paint pushed through some taped areas which I had to later fix. I admit that was my fault. Cleanup is extremely tedious and just messy. You connect it to your garden hose during the process to flush out the paint and my garden hose has paint all over the end and looks nasty. I guess I could have bought another hose just to use for my painting. Spending money for this, that and then something else just never ends! The pex like hose is extremely rigid and doesn't bend very well. It's always kinking up on me and I always have to spend so much time unraveling it. I guess I'll use it to finish painting my house but I know that I can only use it during certain times of the year due to my region being extremely hot and dry during the summer. Who knows? Maybe I would have liked this unit a lot more where extreme lack of humidity isn't a problem. But the fact that I can't get this sprayer to give me even looking results on my exterior stucco walls was, by far, the biggest disappointment. Since I have to go back and roll it on it with a roller heavily dipped in a paint tray with paint this was a frustratingly useless endeavor, to put it mildly. Yes, I'm super annoyed. I'll probably sell this on craigslist for whatever I can get for it when I am done painting our new home. I'd get a smaller airless sprayer for small projects like painting furniture or when taking doors off hinges to spray outside for that super flawless finish; assuming I won't have any issues. This magnum pro17 is a hog in terms of taking up space wherever I put it. I'm including two photos of my stucco walls. The first one on the left hand side looks more solid and consistent. That is the area I rolled after I sprayed using the Graco sprayer. The righthand side is sprayed only. In the second photo you can see along the aluminum frame that the color is more solid. This is because I rolled all around the window after spraying it so that I could take the plastic off. I now have to go back and roll the area toward the right.

Great sprayer
I’ve had it a week and so far it’s a great sprayer
by Michael1976
First and only spray was very disappointing
On my first and only spray I was spraying some shutters and got severe orange peel. Tried increasing pressure (65-75% of max) and although my spray pattern was perfect the orange peel was constant. Just more paint being pushed out with the higher pressure. Called tech support and they were lost for a reason other than I should strain a brand new unopened paint can and maybe increase pressure to almost max. This was not what I expected and believe the spray tip could be the issue but tech support did not offer to replace. I am hesitant to spray again because I don’t want to see another horrible finish. I don’t know what to do. I was spraying Benjamin Moore Moorglo exterior house paint.

Great Job
I bought this sprayer to spray a wooden fence I put up. Had about 2000’ to spray. Sprayed 165 gallons of paint thru the spray and not one problem. It was well worth the investment. Thanks for a Great Product.

I purchased the LTS17
Bought this to restore a 30 year old pole barn. First time I ever used a paint sprayer and made this job so much easier to complete instead of using a paint brush and large mat roller.

Great for small paint contractors
Purchased this prox17 a week ago and have used it to spray 15 gallons on 2 different jobs since. Very easy to handle by oneself. Cleanup takes a few buckets of fresh water but not bad at all. Sprays really nice. Hose is very awkward being new and stiff hopefully that'll get better with time or with a whip extention.

***MUST READ REVIEW*** As a contractor & daily user of this product NO GO!!!!!!!!!!
I own 13 of these units ($7,800) after going through about 10-15 of the smaller version X7 ($6,000) which all died within 1 year of use. To be fair you MUST know what we use these for. We use these for WATER and a thin liquid with an adhesive added to it similar to lacquer called Fosters 32-22. 90% of the time its just WATER. We use them daily or close to it. We do not have issues with the sticky nature of the Fosters 32-22 like clogging or parts getting stuck. We lose pump pressure and consistent power from the sprayer due to internal parts within the pump assembly (Part #17J874). At first I tried ordering replacement parts ($1,100) to try and save money by replacing ONLY the parts needed but, after ordering all the main components that could possibly go bad on the pump assembly (Part #17J874) including the "Pro Exchange" pump (#24Y472 @ $90ea.), the drain valve assembly (#235014 @ $120ea.), and the pressure control kit (#17J881 @ $80ea), as well as other small parts. I replaced the pump, the pressure valve, and the prime/drain valve on 3 units and all still had the same problem. They would not keep and maintain pressure for continuous use. CONCLUSION: -Our use is not excessively abusive or overly demanding of the so called "Pro" series. -They break down and have issues within 6-12 months of use. -They cost about $600 -Then the pump assembly costs $450 to replace because its the only way to repair the problem properly, which did work by the way, after all the individual parts did not. -I am trying to get the remaining parts I ordered returned which is NOT looking good at the moment. -The Rep for Graco that services Home Depot is nice but doesn't seem to get the concept of excellent customer service for someone who is buying $17k of his product. -These may be fine for a home owner to have and use throughout the year but NOT FOR DAILY USE -We have spent roughly $17,000 on these Graco products over a period of 2-3 years and WILL NO LONGER BUY THEIR PRODUCTS AS A CONTRACTOR.

Hi Dan. Thank you for providing your feedback on the Magnum ProX17 airless paint sprayer. We’re sorry to hear about your experience and that it was not clear that Magnum sprayers, even the ProX sprayers, are not intended for daily use and with solvent based, lacquer type materials. Graco has professional, contractor grade sprayers that are designed to handle hot solvents and the rigors of use on a daily basis. Based on the information provided in your review, it’s clear that these units would be a better investment and provide the capabilities you need on a daily basis. Please contact our technical support team M-F at 844-241-9498 between 7:30 am-5:30 pm CST so we can provide more information on our contractor grade sprayers. - JW GracoInc

Excellent airless system
I had the immediate need to paint a project that I had built for our youngest grandsons - a LEGO table. After a fair amount of research I purchased the Magnum X17. I had primed the all wood parts (table and chairs) with a brush prior to purchasing the X17. I used Behr Marquee (Magnetic Gray). I set up a temporary spray booth in our garage. We are extremely pleased with the result. My X17 will get a lot of use.

This sprayer is the first one I've bought that actually does what the advertising said it would - spray unthinned latex paint straight from the can. One of the projects we bought it for was painting a porch glider that has a lot of parts that would be difficult to paint with a brush. Even with the time taken up for setting up and clean up afterward the time savings was huge. I added the 20" extension to the paint gun to reduce the amount of bending I would have to do.
