Questions & Answers

If you input 36 volts from your array. Will this controller step it down to charge a 24 volt ballet bank?
ByFeb 3, 2025

Answer This Question

With a 24V battery bank, can 12 100W 12V panels (theoretical 1200W) be wired as 3 48V strings paralleled and input to the controller? Also; need the panel and bank voltage be the same?

Answer This Question

Hello Hugh - Yes, 100W panels can be configured in series to achieve various voltages, including 24V or 48V. Vmp for the GS-STAR-100W panel is 19.12V, so under full sun, the proposed 4S3P config would produce up to 76.48V @ 15.69A. These values are well within max ratings for the Zenith 60, so yes, this array would work well with this controller to charge 24V, 36V, or even 48V banks. No, the panel and bank voltages do not need to match, since the Zenith 60 controller employs MPPT technology, which allows it to modify input to match the voltage of whatever bank it is connected to. Matching voltages would only be necessary if using a PWM controller. Keep in mind that the max input for total wattage does depend on the battery bank voltage as follows: 12V bank = 900W max input; 24V = 1800W max input; 36V = 2600W max input; 48V = 3200W max input.

          Answer This Question

The total wattage depends on the battery bank voltage and chemistry. On a 12V battery, this charge controller can handle up to 900W. This controller has a one year warranty.

              Answer This Question

On a 12V battery bank, the Zenith-60 charge controller can handle four 200W panels. I recommend placing these in two parallel strings of two.

Quit Charging, a Common Issue per Users
Many people have had problems with the controller no longer charging the batteries. I bought this more than a year ago from Home Depot but just connected it when the panels were installed. It worked for 2 days then stopped charging the batteries, a very common complaint on the web. Try searching HQST for the generic. Some nice features for the $$.

I am very satisfied with the Grape Solar 60 Amp Controller so far. It is a hefty unit with a large metal cooling fin back, the input lugs are large, maybe 2 AWG ? The unit has a good display, it is easy to set up, and maneuver around. It is a great value, with many features, and good capacity. It is a big plus that Grape Solar has helpful technicians available to help. Looking forward to the App for my IOS.

I have four 300 watt grape solar panels connected two in series in one string and two in series in the second series. I then connected these strings in parallel to the MPPT charge control which powers a 24v battery wall. Grape Solar support team gave me quick support in planning the setup I used. The whole system has worked flawlessly for 3 years now. I can boon-dock my RV and run the AC. Very satisfied.

Worhtless crap if you need reliability
Features are great if it only worked beyond 2 days with my 800 watts of solar hooked up. My batteries drained all the way down to 11.1 and BMS shut them off because this crap controller is reading the voltage wrong says there at 13.6 and cant get more then 20 watts in charge form solar for whatever reason, its also reading my PV solar array incorrectly. Grape Solar tech support is a joke , its all email and havent heard anything yet from them, worthless product and support!! RETURNED
