No, I plant tomatoes about a foot deep here in New England. When I lived in a 10 month frost free environment, 18" deep. Tomatoes will grow in 7" of soil. You will not, however, get 7 to 9 foot plants that produce over 50 pounds of tomatoes.
No. I didn't measure them, but I think they are closer to .5 inches.
I am on year 3 of mine and it hasn't had any issues yet.
Yes, all of those things are included. It has enough side boards to even subdivide in the middle. Boards are dovetail grooved to fit into each post.
I live in Upstate NY. I live on a hill and our winters are brutal. I bought mine in August 2012. Mine was great until over this winter. All the boards rotted at the same time so I am just buying my 2nd set (March 2019) so mine lasted 6-1/2 years. I think a lot of it had to do with ants. I could only spray with something that was nontoxic to plants & dog friendly. This set I plan to spray entirely with a sealer & will spray every subsequent year with a sealer on exposed wood. But for the price I am happy with how long it lasted.
I used 25 cubic feet. Could use a little less if not to the top.
You could use landscape fabric made for this purpose, or several layers of newspaper. If you use newspaper be sure there are no colored sections because the colored ink in the newsprint will prevent your plans from growing.
I found the dirt settles a bit in that upper tier, and was glad I bought 20 cubic feet vs the 19 that's recommended. I'll use the excess to top it off before planting my veggies, and fill some other planters.
No it is not treated.Cedar does not need treating...to survive!
I am reading mixed reviews too. These better be stack-able because I ordered 6 of them to be stacked together. The videos shows you can and don't need anything extra than what comes with the kits.
