Can 1" Drywall screws be used with 1/2" sheet rock?

Asked by JohnD June 17, 2015

It depends what is behind the 1/2 inch sheetrock. If it is 1/2-inch fir strips or would lathe than the 1-inch screws will be fine. If you have 2x4 studs behind the sheetrock, then you could go up to 1.25-inch

I was working on a project building shelves out of pallets. I bought some brackets but all the screws I had were either too long or too short to attach the wood to them. I specifically needed 1" screws and HD was the only place that had them readily available. They're strong too. They're perfect for projects involving thin pallet planks. Just make sure you pre drill.
