Questions & Answers

Do I need to buy a special drill bit to secure the one way screws? Thanks.

Answer This Question

Joey, The driver tool is helpful but not necessarily needed. Large flathead screwdriver attached to a power drill will work. Pre-drill 3/16" of an inch diameter pilot hole. Lshep, 5/16" x 4" inch lag bolts with a flat washer should work well. Thank You, Grisham Bros.

I used regular screws of the same thread size. You may want to use tapcons or stainless screws.

Exactly how long is the bracket part that goes into the tubular bar on the window guards? I need to be able to adjust width yet maintain security.

            Answer This Question

Judging from the length of the 3" screws provided (as in the photo) I would estimate the square bracket part is 5 to 6 inches long. I would not pull it out more that 3 inches per side to maintain some sort of reasonable security. If that is still not enough width for you, consider these possibilities: 1. Mount the bars INSIDE if there are hard surfaces available that are not available on the outside. I did this to maintain aesthetics on a garage window. 2. Use TWO guards and join them together with a "T-Bracket". Here is the HD link. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Grisham-Black-Window-Bar-T-Bracket-Connectors-2-Pack-WB3TB/202770885 3. If you choose to use their non-reversing screws, they sell a tool to install them as I found it difficult to install with a regular flat-blade screwdriver. When I installed the guards inside, I used regular Allen-headed screws. Here is the link to the INSTALLATION tool: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Unique-Home-Designs-One-Way-Screw-Driver-IDA09200003000/202559952 Here is what Grisham had to say about REMOVING them: "The removal tools are difficult to find, and must be specifically sized to the screw head to work properly, and success is not certain. Another method is to cut a slot into the head of the screw for use with a flat head screwdriver. Someone would need to use an electric hand held grinder with a cutting wheel to establish a modest slot." - Grisham Bros. I wasn't able to find a removal tool at HD, but a google search might help if you know the specifics. If I needed to remove them I would do as the Grisham Bros. suggest. Hope this helps...

Langdon, Can drive the safety screws directly into the block or mortar line. Use a 1/4" inch masonry size drill bit for pre-drilling the pilot holes. Thank You, Grisham Bros.

So if it is actually cinder, use care when installing anchors as cinder easily crumbles. Try to install between block in grout lines if possible. The beauty of this product is the adjusting capability which gives you some play. The product is lite weight and easily handled. Installed mine two years ago and has held up well.

Yes-just use Tapcon screws. I used them and they worked well on a block wall.
