Depending on the installation method. If the window guard is mounted on the interior or exterior window trim, then no obstruction of travel to the upper window. If mounted within the window track of the upper window, then yes, downward travel of the upper window would be limited. Thank You.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected These window guards are exactly what I needed and better than expected. They fit perfectly (sliding adjustment side-to-side design) as if they were made for my windows. Another reviewer is right, they do look like shutters once installed. They are hinged and can be installed to swing in or out. As designed, I use a padlock on the (holed) latch to secure. For window cleaning I simply remove the padlock (see pic, left midddle is painted white padlock) and "swing open" the bars. For my installation (after install), the screws are not visible/accessable so I used long drywall screws instead of the included cumbersome security screws. Good paint, solid and strong, with nice appearance. I highly recommend this product.

My purpose of getting this one to keep burglars out. Both side of the bars have an nice finish( if that make sense).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grisham PP-SPAG Window Guard 5-Bar We purchased 3 of these window guards and are extremely pleased with all of them. We anticipated that the 6 bar units we purchased were hinged, but were not, however, we use them anyway. The 3 bar unit was hinged and works perfectly. We would recommend these to any home owner. Instead of the screws that came with the units we used 3 inch long screws with stainless steel washers to increase the security. We are in the process of ordering 2 more units to use between our back door and screen door to beef up security. For the money this is by far the best buy on the market.

Protects a window from intruders and it can also latch open by unhooking the optional padlock if you need to clean the window or install an air conditioner. Is very sturdy but not bulky. This one can fit nearly any window as it is made to accomodate many window types. Make sure you check the specs for your type of window. It can also be used to prevent a child from falling out of a window.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Serves its purpose I bought the 6 bar window guard so that we could leave a first floor window open at night for ventilation during warm weather. It works well for this purpose. As far as securing the window against a potential burglar, a set of bolt cutters would probably make short work of this unit. However, that would involve some time and a certain amount of noise which would hopefully discourage a would-be thief.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Was not disappointed! They look nice and feel strong. I like how easy they open from the inside, in the event of a fire. The shipping was fast and easy to order. I wish they were available in the stores though because if I can't see it, it's "risky" to order online. A lot of things ordered online are low quality; so I was very skeptical.

Simple to install, and include an emergency release which I did not use since the window I put it on is not an only exit. I knocked off a point on installation since the screws that came with it were not that heavy duty. Would have worked, but I used my own bolts to strengthen it.
