About This Product

Bring home the functionality and features of a much larger lathe with this compact G0838 16 in. x 24 in. Variable-Speed Wood Lathe. Don't let it's small size fool you, this stout machine has plenty to offer. With a 2 HP 3-phase motor using a VFD to operate on single-phase 220-Volt power, this lathe gives you the extra torque needed for turning hard woods at really low speeds. Additionally, the headstock slides along the precision-ground cast iron bed and can be locked in place on the tailstock side for outboard turning of much larger pieces. This machine is a bowl-turner's dream.

Questions & Answers

Q:Can you run the lathe on a 110 to 220 power transformer
by|Jun 23, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for contacting us. We have not tested the wood lathe with a power transformer and are unable to provide specific guidance. For accurate information, we recommend consulting the manufacturer of the power transformer. They will need the following specifications: Voltage: 220 volts Motor Full Load Amperage: 12 amps Recommended Circuit Size: 15 amps VFD Rating: 2 HP If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to our Product Support team by phone.

Q:What is the weight limit of the piece of wood you want to turn?

      Answer This Question

A:  We appreciate your question. There isn't a specific weight limit for the material being turned, as long as it's balanced, the lathe should be able to handle it. However, due to the top-heavy nature of lathes, it's essential to either bolt the lathe to the floor or weight it down securely. Extreme caution must always be exercised when turning heavy pieces.

Q:Does tail stock have drill chuck

        Answer This Question

A:  We appreciate you reaching out to us with your inquiry. The G0838 lacks a drill chuck in its tailstock. However, you can employ a drill chuck in the tailstock by using an MT#2 drill chuck arbor along with a corresponding drill chuck featuring the same Jacobs Taper.

          So far, so good!
I assembled the lathe and started turning. My previous lathe was about 50 years old. When I started turning with my new machine, it was awesome. I turned to about 10 hours that weekend. I could not have asked for more!

Poor quality, bad design. The tail stock is out of alignment with the drive by 1/8”. Variable speed/reversible feature is poorly designed so that something as simple as starting requires that you first select a direction, (forward-neutral-reverse) then power on, then select neutral, then select forward and finally spin up the speed to the rpm you want. Clunky. To achieve a certain speed requires repeated adjustment and re-adjustment. After only two months I am fighting rust on everything not painted and the paint is flaking.

Super lathe loaded with all the features one needs
This is a super lathe - the only complaint I have is the door to change the belts is awful small. This lathe is affordable and ready to tackle any job. It is loaded with all the features one needs. The extra extension bed makes it useable for any task. I did buy 4-inch wheels for it and put two boards between the legs to act a shelfs.

              Love this New Lathe
Very quiet and very smooth, big step up from old shop lathe. Reversible direction and very easy speed adjustment. Versatile High speed belt setting goes all the way down to 150 RPM and up to 3250 so will only shift to low speed for very big turning. I'm tall so I built a 4" base for the lathe which also doubles to ride dollies to move around shop. Legs have natural spots to build two shelves for storage. the bed extension is back ordered and will be welcome addition. Not too bad to assemble, have an overhead winch will allowed me to put it together myself.
This is an excellent lathe. I am using it everyday. I shopped for a new lathe for weeks before I cho
This lathe is what a wood lathe should be. I asked around before I bought it and found that everyone said that they were happy with theirs too. Good lathe.good price.

Great lathe at a fair price.
I have had this lathe for over five months and have turned many projects including bowls and large and small spindle items. I am very happy with the smooth operation, speed control and power. I've turned a couple of projects that weighed over 20 pounds when completed and required the bed extension. I also have the tool holder riser for larger face plate turnings, but I haven't used it yet. I upgraded from an older Delta 4 speed lathe and a small variable speed Rikon. The Delta was passed on to our son and I kept the Rikon, but haven't used since getting this lathe. There is some high pitched noise around the 700 RPM speed, but I normally avoid it. When turning the large projects I started out at roughly 60 rpm since my "blank" was really a 2 ft, 10" diameter pine log. The lathe handled it easily and even though I have not bolted it to the floor, it was steady at that low speed. I highly recommend this product and I'm very pleased with it. I look forward to each and every project and I think it will be all the lathe I will ever need. The delivery truck driver put the crate in our garage where I unpacked it and carried all the pieces down into the basement alone. Assembly went went and I found the instructions to be adequate.
                        Great wood lathe
After doing some research on a lathe that could fit the small confines of my workshop, I settled on the GO838. It has a 220 single phase 2 hp motor and the 'shortbed' footprint. I do mostly bowl turning and the 16" swing will be big enough for most of my turning. I can also use the same chucks that I have for my 12" Delta lathe (1"X8). The front access door opening to change out the belt to change speeds might be a bit small for someone with bigger hands/fingers but still can be done. Just a personal thing but I would prefer the forward /reverse switch to be 'turn to the right is forward and left reverse',as the switch is the other way around. Overall plenty of power, speed control, good castings fit/finish, size/weight and lastly, for me, affordable price. As mentioned in other reviews, I also used a file to soften the sharp edges on a few ruff edges.. The GO838 lathe was back ordered at the time I ordered but glad I waited. Mine was made March2020. It did arrive with a couple of chips to the paint and I emailed customer service a few weeks ago, and was sent touch up paint. Great service response. Another note, It looks good next to my GO555P bandsaw.
