Q:What's the minimum cfm dust collector needed to run this drum sander?
    by|Apr 5, 2024
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. For effective dust collection, we advise a minimum of 450 CFM per port. However, for optimal performance on the G0920 Drum Sander, it's preferable to have 700 CFM or higher, as it enhances the efficiency of the sanding operations.

22"/44" Open-Ended Drum Sander ok sanding machine
Works pretty good for me have about three hours with it, only complaint is the backlash when raising, and lowering the table. However if you pay attention to the amount that you turn the wheel up or down it is consistent, and works ok. There are a lot of good things about this sander as well. If this is in your price range it is a good bye.

Pleasure to use, once you learn the particulars.
Very happy with the purchase. No experience with shipping as I live close to the Springfield, MO showroom. The unit was very well packed in two separate boxes. One for the stand, and one for the sander itself. The assembly instructions are very clear and well photographed. For the operation, this may be my issue, but remembering to loosen the head locking when raising or lowering the drum and then retightening it before a sanding operation takes some getting used to. It is also VERY easy to take to deep of a pass and stall the unit. The DRO is not super accurate when first starting to measure. Be sure to give yourself two or three revolutions higher than you need before using the DRO for any relative measurements; the unit will not register the carriage movement due to the runout on the screw side of the carriage, until you have rotated the handle 1-2 times. The sand paper retaining spring closest to the elevation screw is a bit difficult to reach and keep depressed when changing the paper, but with some practice, it is becomes easier. Aside from these small idiosyncrasies and learning curve, the unit has been a pleasure to run.

          Fabulous Dust Collection
Used the sander for the first time today to sand / flatten my old workbench top. The top was 1.5 inches thick and @ 34 inches wide - and in pretty rough shape. After half a dozen passes, it was smooth / level / like new and there was ABSOLUTELY no sawdust anywhere. We were hooked up to a 1.5 HP cyclone dust collector with a 4" flex hose and every drop of sanding dust was in the collection bag. I was astonished. My lungs are loving this sander! And every piece of hardware was in the box and assembly was super easy. A Game Changer! I am always buying Grizzly. Ordered a drill press tonight as a matter of fact!

            G0920 Drum Sander
I bought this item in early April 2023. I have been primarily using this unit for small shop projects. I will say this is a well built machine. The instructions missed a step when installing the rails. Prior to Figure #22 you could have one more picture showing a better angle on which side is up. I installed them upside down. I have been sanding primarily oak and walnut. You will still have to do a fine finishing step. This does produce some micro grooves. Now as for the unit it was the 2HP motor that made my decision. I had researched other manufacturers comments and blogs which discussed how under powered the 1.5 HP 120v units were. I have only stalled the unit one time. That was me being aggressive and testing how much I could take off from oak slabs. I have not tested the maximum 44” width open ended feature. The flip up out feed and in feed tables could be a tad more structurally rigid. Cast or steel would be better. However, table feeds are functional. The digital depth gauge comes with the unit and it is very helpful. I find my self not worrying about a quarter or half turn adjustment just watch the depth gauge. Had to re-adjust the in and out feed tables after about 10 hours of use. It is a very quiet unit and it has saved me hours of hand sanding. From a competitive standpoint I can not offer any insight as to how this competes with Jet or Supermax. I have never owned any of those products . This is my first drum sander. I did order a bear crawl to help move the unit around more easily and the unit is stable on the bear crawl. I’m very happy with this purchase. The only negative is the plastic roller cover. That could have been metal.

Response from Customer Experience TeamSep 5, 2023
We're pleased to hear that the drum sander has been serving you well for your shop projects and you find it to be a well-built unit. We appreciate your constructive comments regarding the assembly instructions and the need for a clearer depiction of the correct rail orientation. We will certainly take this feedback into account for future improvements to our product documentation. In terms of the plastic roller cover, we'll take your preference for a metal cover into consideration for future product development. Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback about your recent purchase!

              Worse than expected
My initial review is not good. This drum sander leaves snipe marks like a planer, so when sanding cut to dimension boards, I needed to sand out those recessed marks a couple of inches from the ends. Maybe I'm taking too much off per pass, so I'll keep playing with that. Loading new paper is not easy as the tension spring on the right is very awkward to get at with the motor support blocking access. It is not easy to squeeze the lever all the way to insert the end of the sandpaper roll and hold it as you insert the end. This is my first drum sander purchase and I bought this one because it was available to ship immediately and every other similar model from others was months out.

                Excellent!
Built like a tank. Perfect setup out of the box. A beautiful machine!
                by
I bought this a month ago and am very pleased with the accuracy. The only disappointing part is the door on the front of the cabinet is too small for a box of the sandpaper to fit for inside storage.

Had problems with the electrical box. No parts available. Lost production. Won't by grizzly again. Going back to powermatic
