Q:How do you remove the chuck on the mill head?
    by|Mar 18, 2024
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. To remove the chuck, you need to hold the chuck and loosen the drawbar. Then, tap the drawbar loose from the taper in the spindle. Next, finish loosening the drawbar while holding the chuck to prevent it from falling out. Finally, complete the operation by installing the correct tapered insert, MT#2.

Q:What materials is it capable of turning/milling accurately
        by|Jan 8, 2024
        1 Answer
        Answer This Question

A:  We appreciate your inquiry. It has the capability to cut various materials; however, achieving optimal results requires using the appropriate feed, speed, and cutter. As a lightweight machine, it performs best with soft metals, plastics, and most steels (including stainless steel with the correct cutter and feed rate, but at a moderate pace). While it can handle harder materials, the process may take longer and is not recommended for efficiency.

I purchased this middle lathe combination a few years ago. I'm very happy with the way the lathe works the bill is also really well. The main issues that I've had with it is I've had the roll pan come out of the lead screw once. Which was fun because by be repairing it gave me a more sense a better sense of how the lathe was constructed. I also had issues with not having a

            Nice combo set
This combo is a nice beginner setup. The one thing its lacking, is a vice that will fit the 2" Tee slot spacing. Ive used the lathe several times with no issue. Now that i have it, i wish it had a wider range of threads per inch.

Amazing precision but very much a "work in progress"
This was delivered last week. I bought it to make small close tolerance parts. I've been clocking it using a 0.0001" test indicator and a ground MT 2 test bar. With the end of the bar supported by the tailstock TIR is ~ 0.0001" all along the test bar with a 0.0004" droop at 6" from the spindle face. There's about 0.001" play in the tailstock ram, so that is a likely cause for the droop. With the bar only supported in the spindle there is a 1' 2" angular error between the bar and the axis of rotation. At 8" from the spindle face the bar is ~0.0033" toward the rear of the bed with ~0.001" of droop. The bearings are 30205 taper roller bearings made for automotive front wheels. I've ordered a pair of ABEC 7 angular contact machine tool spindle bearings which should reduce the spindle axis TIR by more than 1/2 if I understand the datasheets correctly. That's the good stuff. As one should expect at this price, there are some issues: tailstock clamping and adjustment is terrible. You have to completely remove the tailstock to lock the upper part to the base. And I had to fit a washer to the clamping bolt under the tailstock because otherwise as soon as I tightened it, the tailstock went back to the location when it arrived. the backplate center bore will not fit an MT 2 center the groove in the ram is ~3/16" too short so you only get 13/16" of travel, not the stated 1" the manual is complete crap with loads of typos even though the ShopFox 6" x 10" lathe is the same machine without the mill head and has a much better manual. I had to log a support call to find out how to remove the mill chuck arbor. I'm still waiting on the response, but assume it will come today and I can begin to test the mill head. leadscrew is 16 TPI which makes each turn 0.0625", but the dial is marked 0.03125" per turn. When I can procure one I'm going to install a 7/16" -20 TPI leadscrew and a 0.0-0.050" dial. The tailstock quill groove being cut too short and the leadscrew dial being off by 2x is is rather an embarrassment as is the failure to design a sensible tailstock adjustment and clamp. I haven't tested the mill yet. I'll report on that later. I've been commenting on the machine in more detail on the projects-in-metal@groups.io and machine-tool-rebuilding@groups.io mailing lists.Fit and finish rates 5 stars, but the tailstock quill and leadscrew dial errors are extremely disappointing. I can fix the flaws without too much trouble, but resent needing to. In addition, there is no information in the manual on change gear setups not a chart inside the gear cover. And a semi-calibrated speed dial wouldn't cost anything more than redoing the panel graphic. Overall I'm very enthusiastic about the machine. I always wanted an EMCO Compact 5, but couldn't afford one. This is significantly stouter.bbUt I'd thought Grizzly had made more progress in their QC and documentation. I had to contact Grizzly to get the manual PDF because it's not been put on the website.
