About This Product

The UPS15-58FC is the standard for most residential heating systems. The 3-Speed pump motor provides 3 distinct pump curves enabling it to replace over 30 different competitors circulator pumps. Comes with built-in check valve and standard flange orientation. The integrated check valve significantly improves zone valve close off reliability, prevents thermo-siphoning, allows for minimal system flow, and eliminates the expense for an inline check valves.

Q:What is the pipe inlet and outlet diameter.
by|Jan 1, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  This is a flange mounted pump. Therefore, the inlet and outlet do not have set sizes. The connection size would be determined by the flanges that are selected. Two bole circulator flange dimensions are pretty much standardized across the different manufacturers. As a result, the different pump manufacturers produce flanges as well as an ever-increasing number of specialty manufacturers. Today you can get flanges to accommodate pipe and tube ranging from ½” to 11/2” in diameter. Flanges are available in cast iron, bronze, and stainless steel. Connections styles include copper sweat, copper press, and the more conventional female tread.

Q:Can I use this pump horizontal position
    by|Dec 11, 2023
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  I am sorry I can’t answer your question because you have not given me a reference point to determine your definition of horizontal. Putting that aside, let me answer your question a little differently. Installation orientation does matter because the motor is water lubricated. It contains a water jacket that must fill with water and become devoid of air. Therefore, the orientation of the motor on a water lubricated cartridge circulator is critical. But not the direction of the flow. Under the pictures on the Home Depot product listing page is a section entitled Product Details. If you expand that section, you will find PDFs of the product documents. Open the instructions and you will find this addressed on page 7. Figure 2.1 gives diagrams that illustrate acceptable and unacceptable motor orientation. On a side note, when you install a new circulator, it is a best practice to have it run for at least a half hour. This is sufficient time for the water jacket to fill and for the air in the water jacket to be evacuated.

Q:Can this be used to replace a little red lr20bf?
      by|Dec 6, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  If you compare the performance graphs, known as pump curves, for both pumps you will find they are not identical but very similar. I don’t know the application so I can’t be definitive. But as a plumber with many decades of experience, I can’t think of an application where the difference would matter. I am 99.9 percent sure you will be fine. The B&G pump you have is a single speed. The Grundfos is a three speed. If you put the Grundfos pump in the highest speed its flow rate will most closely approximate that of the B&G pump.

Q:Can this pump be used with propylene glycol by itself or should a secondary pump be added with it for ground water circulation on a 3/4” by 2000 foot geothermal ground loop?
        by|Nov 14, 2023
        1 Answer
        Answer This Question

A:  This pump can be used with glycol and often is part of a closed loop heating system. I have never used it in a geothermal system because the ground in my area requires deep wells that would require pumps with higher head pressure and flow rate. I assume that your system is shallow, and that this pump’s performance curve meets the system design specifications.

Works like a charm. Pretty quiet. It was a tricky install because of the location of the old one but that was my unique situation. Otherwise it would have just dropped right in.

Working great as a replacement for our previous UP 15-42 SF which had gone obsolete. It plugged right into the existing plumbing with no mods required. We added in a remote control so we can run the hot water recirc loop just when we want it, instead of having it run continuously, and so we save a little on energy costs that way.

I have used this type of circulator in the past and they are very quiet and the 3 speeds are ice to have so I can get the proper flow rate on long heating runs
