This should work great for a darker stain. The birch will also work well. I would stay away from the beech, alder or acacia as those will want to yellow.

You can use which ever side appeals to you. All sides must be finished to prevent warping, as is true of any wood.

Chucky, As with most things, wood contracts and expands with temperature and changes in climate. Wood has "pores" which change based on what I just stated, effecting the process. In fact adjusting climate, is sometimes used to manipulate wood for specific results. So, the short answer is. Wood items should always be brought to room temperature before doing anything with them. Note However: If you leave your item at room temperature in a house with a very dry "climate," without sealing, you risk cracks and the stain will take differently then on a piece of wood with proper moisture content.

Is this hard sugar maple or is it soft maple?

It's finger jointed hard maple.

i ordered maple bc of hardness; I would prefer a richer brown. Can I stain it before I treat it?

It's wood. Of course you can stain it.

If treated with mineral oil can it be used as a large cutting board or does it need to be secured to something?

In my experience with this type of product there should be no concern with warping

Can you join this with another section? Looking for 11 ft so would have to buy 2 and cut one to fit.

Of course you can join any two pieces of wood together but you'll need to know what you're doing. Cut both pieces for clean & straight edges, use joinery method of your choice to align them, and use whatever method of choice to join and hold them tight together. The joint will likely not be seamless because of the pattern - especially if joining end grain (short edges).

Does this need to be oiled before stained? Also, if stained does this need to be oiled afterwards?

Sam, Unless otherwise stated (water based) stain is an oil. If you were to oil ahead of staining this would effect the stains ability to penetrate. The water based should be obvious, "oil & water don't mix." As to the oil stain. Wood, like any other material can only take in so much moisture before reaching "saturation." If you oil first you have changed the amount of stain the wood can take in. If you use Mineral Oil, this will act as your finish, but it will dissipate and need to be reapplied as directed. If you choose to stain your top then you will also need to apply a sealer as stain is not "food safe" and could stain that nice new coat you lie on it. So, if you stain apply a polyurethane or other sealer which will "seal" the oil in and prevent drying. Hope this helps.

That would make me super irritated. Let me send you a new butcher block. The easiest way is to go on hardwoodreflections.com and use the contact us tool. Please add in your purchase number and we will get this done! HFAria
Really nice looking
The coutertop was packaged extremely well. I was afraid that there could have been dings/scratches on it, considering how heavy it was and the fact that the outer cardboard had some damage & tears on it. But when I unpacked it, that was not the case, it was perfect. As other folks have said, one side is the "good" side and the other is not. We used this in our laundry room. We cut the countertop into two pieces, a 5' piece for above the washer & dryer, and the remaining 3' piece was for the sink. We finished it ourselves on both sides and all edges using Minwax Satin Poly. The top surface and edges received four coats, using #0000 steel wool between coats. We are also purchasing the 4' version of the same, to be cut down and used for the top of a shoe bench in the laundry room.

This is a beautiful butcher block. It comes unfinished but doesn’t need much other then a light sanding and finish. I used the butcher block to customize some open shelving in my kitchen. It’s a solid piece and I highly recommend it.

Amazing product! My butcher block came packaged nicely and was flawless. It feels great and looks even better. They're not exactly the same on each side so you can choose the side based on the amount of character you want to show. I was using these for shelves and had no problem cutting it. Would buy again.
