The box is rated to hold quite a bit of weight but what about the lid? Can the lid of the box underneath another box with 50 to 100#'s in it stand up to the with above or will it crack on the lids rim like the rubber made tubs ?
Asked by: MS7
It seems to depend on which size and style that you buy. I've bought the 27 gal and have been really impressed so far with the lids. I've sat on it and stacked it with other totes holding at least 50lbs of books. However, the 17 gal lids seem to be a lot less sturdy and at the store I found several with cracked lids. It's probably important to make sure the weight is evenly distributed. Not sure about outside storage but I'd expect high UV would kill these. Also, you need to check the lids at the store. Some have imperfections and of course some have black scuff marks from the way the store packs them which you will not be able to clean out.

Would these keep out mice or other household pests out of the container? Currently using cardboard boxes for general storage in garage and mice have found their way in - looking for ways to prevent this.

I use these and the Sterilite latching units to store bedding, clothing and other things at my hunting camp. It is unoccupied all but a few weekends a year and have had no problems with the rodents getting into them.

I must have bought 40 or 50 of these over the years, They are pretty good for storage I have cracked a few tops so not put anything too heavy on these. The stack nice but in order to move them around you have to lift them up off the tops of the one under it. I store some tools in these in my shed and realized that I have to keep the lighter ones on top so they are easier to move around to get to the ones under. They are pretty good at keeping water out even when left in the rain the tops lock in place so you do not have to worry about them falling off easily. They are great to haul stuff around in I have even stacked the up on the job laid a 4x4 piece of plywood and used it as a work station. They hold bit of weight when stacked and laid side by side My table saw and chops saw easily cans sit on the tops with the plywood. For the price they can't be beat pretty heavy duty and take some punishment.

I needed a tote that my gear would fit into and also fit on my sled. I bought 2 of them. It was difficult to open at first but I thought it was because it was new. The only problem is that the lid fits so tight that it is practically impossible to get off. I actually had to beat the box with a hammer to break it in order to open it (the lid is impenetrable).I thought that perhaps it was difficult to open because the temperature was 1 degree and it might have made the plastic brittle and difficult to open the lid, so I tried opening the second tote when I got home and it was warmed up. Still can't get it open without force.I would not recommend this tote unless you don't care if you ever get your stuff out of it- that is if you can get it open in the first place to get your stuff in.

Storage Room Stacked Totes: storing things long term for cousin, Paralyzed Disabled Vet Reason for buying: In order to store items long term. What I like about these is the durability and ease of stacking. There is nothing that I dislike HDX is now in the stores, same stock number, price as the Commander brand. Overall: What I love about these is the ability to stack these and they interlock with other above or beneath due to design. The size of these was essential since I purchased so many (36) for a cousin. I am buying 20 plus of these today for my upcoming move, and to use in my RV below the bay. I believe these will travel very well. Why I purchased: I recently helped my paralyzed Disabled Veteran cousin put his items in to possibly long term storage. He cannot return to the multi level house that he owns. He suffered spine injury when a car swerved almost hitting him Sept 2018. He had previously purchased this Commander brand of totes. The tag on the shelf is now HDX 12 Gallon Tough Tote. I have only purchased the Commander brand. I am guessing that HDX may have bought out the Commander line. This is apparently the same product. The Commander brand totes were reduced in price from 7.97 per to 5.98 each in San Antonio January 2019. This is the 12 gallon tote which is large enough to store things, but not so large that they cannot be carried. This is far superior to the Sterilite which I have had fail, crack with age. Here is what is on the tag on their shelves transcribed exactly: HDX 12 Gallon Tough Tote $5.98 ea Was $7.97 Ad 12-17 02-03 (I am guessing this was the time frame of them being sold at the lower price) Home Depot Stock Number is next: 1001-869-486 below that is the binary code which is in my pic of their store shelf. I bought so many that I picked them up in the Lumber pickup area. I had no product to supply at the register. The cashier scanned my pic of the label from the shelf since I bought a total of 36 of these. binary code is in this line below that is: 8 57150 00514 6 I purchased these in order to protect his things in storage because they are thick and seem to be very durable. The stacking of these was wonderful. If you look closely at the lid you will see ridges which is made of a more durable plastic which supports the one placed above it. I will include a photo of them stacked in a storage unit so you can see how nicely these fit together. He had previously purchased these and I wanted to use what he was comfortable with. After dealing with so many of these, I was very pleased and that's why I am replacing some of my sterilite and other brands with these. I took a lot of photo's since my cousin was never able to return home since Sept 28, 2018. While riding a bicycle, he hit a curb after swerving to avoid being hit by a car. He sustained a life changing spinal injury, but was injured in this same area of the spine during the Gulf War. He has been in the VA Spinal Unit since early October 2018. At the time of this writing, he is not able to return home to live alone, yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy and withstands Sunlight Because of the needs for myself, of two other relative families, and an aging neighbor, I just bought 14 more of these because the ones I've had in the past are great. I've stored old cast iron tools and other heavy benchtop tools like routers and sanders inside them. One has been outside, in the rain and in the sunlight for a year. Still dry and the plastic has not gotten brittle, nor has it split when moved or lifted, but I did not stack them on top of each other; just the weight of a set of tire chains, fireplace tools and old cast iron cookware. We spent much more at the "Blue Store" on a bit larger storage totes that were blue, but the tops cracked and the corners split with age when I moved them. THIS Yellow Lid/Black Totes HAS NOT had any problems With a "Today Only" sale, they were on Sale for $6.95. If you bought them on line and picked them up at your local store, you were limited to three. If you buy them at the store, there was no limit and we needed 14 for enough storage. I'll keep buying these over all the other types! At the sale price, you just can't go wrong. Bill

While its helpful to be able to purchase lidded storage containers of this size- the design of the lid is poor- in order close the container one cannot completely fill the bin; the depth of the lids’ costs about 10% of the potential volume of the bin. Cheap is not always best.

The biggest problem I have with them is the lids. if you stack them, which I do, you need to place a couple of 1X4s between each tote. Without the 1X4s the lids are not strong enough to support weight, they will break, which can and has toppled the stack. When stacking them the added weight can cause the bottom tote bulge and occasionally crack. The lids are also not able to withstand extended periods outside, at least not in S. TX, they become brittle and will break just opening them. I keep using them because they are far better than the flimsy less expensive ones. If they ever find a way to strengthen the lids and stiffen the sides they will have an outstanding product instead of just a good one.

I wanted a stronger tote for garage storage and these are by far the best for the price. We really like the larger storage capacity as they are nearly as wide on the bottom as they are on top. These are very well made, strong, sturdy, heavy duty totes that quite frankly put all our other totes to shame, therefore, instead of getting just a few as we had originally planned we instead got 18 ea. total of varying sizes (17 Gal., 27 Gal. and 12 Gal.) to fill up our 2 Husky racks because they also just look so good. The side notches are great if you need to lock them or secure the lids down better but mine fit nice and snug without doing that and the lids do not warp or twist as others do with the slightest pressure. We may not ever need their full strength but we are now covered if we do down the road. We expect these to last a long while so no more of the flimsy ones for us. Strongly recommend these and to avoid others....you will be glad you did.

I've been using these in our basement, garage and attic for several years now. They are GREAT! The lids fit tightly and DO NOT come off, yet they are easy to remove. It's a two-handed operation; one on each end. They stack beautifully and securely because of the deep recess of the lid. It fits the bottoms perfectly and holds tight. I have put up to four of them on a mover's dolly and they do not slide off. They hold a terrific amount of stuff and are very sturdy. I use one for all my painting tools; another for seldom used heavy duty tools like a metal cutting worm-drive, multiple heavy duty sanders, a bunch of routers and large demo / construction tools. So far, despite my somewhat rough treatment, none of them have busted, cracked or even hinted at failure. On one, I even mounted my chop saw to a board that fits the lid's recess and it holds that saw securely enough to use! I thought they were a deal at their previous prices twelve bucks or higher. On sale at HD, this is the best deal I've seen, and I have been keeping an eye out for sales on these since I like them so much. Versatile, Strong. Stackable. Durable. Secure. Great value!
