Q:Maximum weight a tote take on top of it from more of the same totes with items in them? I need a lot stacked for a storage unit. I know you can't tell how much my items will weigh, but hope you have done tests for stacking in such example.

Not as heavy duty as expected
I purchased about a dozen of these to store various items while my son was at college. Books, toys, clothing, etc. I stacked them four high with the heavier totes at the bottom of the stack. The lids failed in one year in storage area. See pictures

This Commercial Flip-Top Tote seems to be less durable and more flimsy then ones I have purchased some years back! It has a piano hinge which is so much better then the thin plastic hinge I have seen around. The size of the tote (26) gallons seems like plenty of room for storage! It feathers a locking top but being made of plastic, it would not be hard to break into, also is easy to stack same size totes!

This HDX tote is billed as a commercial grade tote box. I'm not so sure about that, but it does an adequate job at what it is designed to do - store a bunch of stuff.
It measures about 19" wide x 28.25" long x 15" deep. The top pieces are on fairly sturdy hinges and fold together when closed. I only have one of these totes, but I would be a little leery about stacking them, especially if you have any significant amount of weight in the top one. When closed, the lid does seem to flex quite a bit.
I saw other people commenting that the tote had a bad smell to it. I didn't notice any particular smell, but I did leave the top flipped open for a few days before I used it, just in case.

I like this large, 26 gallon, well-made storage container. It's a arge size, which is what I was looking for to store things in. It is stackable with others, has a top which meshes together when closed, and has a hole on each end of the lids to make it lockable. For its size, it is very lightweight, which is a plus for when it is loaded. The carry handles are rounded and comfortable on the hands.. The hinges are continuous metal rods. And, it is made in the USA!

Overall, the bin is of sturdy construction, the size is nice for offering many options in what you can store inside the bin. I would recommend this bin for indoor storage. While the flip top lid uses a metal hinge pin to make opening and closing easy.
The two-piece construction allows for flex in the lid which would allow water to seep into the bin. Even with no flexing in the lid, it is not as water tight as a one-piece lid. Maybe making the lid from a thicker material would help to increase strength and limit flexibility in the lid?
The biggest advantage of a flip top lid is it’s attached to the bin and you never have to worry about misplacing the lid. The bins are stackable and can be nested when not in use to save space.
The lids can be locked using a long shackle padlock. But the lock shackle goes through the center of the handle making it awkward to carry when locked. (See Image Below)

HDX 12 Gal. Commercial Gray Flip Top Tote is a durable, light duty, stackable container that I used to store my electrical cords and accessories for my battery charger and compressor. It is a perfect size that fit my needs (until I buy more, then I’ll get another one!!). Since it is smaller than the 26 gallon tote, it is less flimsy, easy to handle and move around. I like the flip top, no more losing a cover! Dimensions in the first picture.

HDX 26-Gal. Commercial Flip Top Tote in Gray is a durable, light duty, stackable container that I used to store my holidays decorations. This is perfect for anything light including camping supplies, bedding, seasonal storage, and pantry items. For storing heavy items in place, I would have no problem using. For moving heavy items, I would not use this for fear of cracking or breaking since it is a bit flimsy; I would use the Home Depot ‘HDX Tough Tote’ instead. Dimensions in first picture.

We all have stuff. And our stuff needs to be organized or stored or carried cheaply and neatly. These gray flip totes help you do that. First on the size - this tote is about the size of a small laundry basket. It's not too big that it would take two people to carry it, so taking it up to the attic or down the basement steps or up on a garage shelf is not an issue shouldn't be an issue. Then on the construction - the plastic is quite stiff and strong (I couldn't find any indication of what kind of plastic it is embossed into the tote anywhere). The sides of the tote angle in SLIGHTLY so you don't have any large voids or wasted space inside if you put squarish items inside like boxes of holiday decorations, or books. The lids lock together nicely and the undersides of the lid are gusseted for strength if you stack these. The lids are also shaped to accept the bottom of a tote you may stack on top and it will lock the two together so no tip overs. The hinges have a strong steel rod running through so the lids are there to stay. The hand holds on the ends are smoothly shaped so no sharp plastic edges to dig into your flesh. The inside is a nice smooth plastic, so you could fill this with ice and put your party cans and bottles in this and just wipe it out afterward. If you have sports equipment or gardening supplies or DVDs and CDs or tools or extension cords or books or knick knacks or clothes or shoes you wan't to store away or these will serve you well. They'll even fit a standing LP record perfectly with the lids left at the side.

I prefer the 12-Gallon of the flip top tote compared to the 26-gallon version due to my smaller home. Similar to the 26-Gallon tote, the 12-gal toe is sturdy and well-made of high quality plastic. It is easier to handle and store in tighter spaces. Note that this size container does not have a pre-drilled hole like the 26-gallon version of this storage box. As of December 31, 2020 the price of this is about half of the 26-gallon. I’ve only had positive experiences with the HDX brand and this is no exception.

I picked this product since I’ve used HDX products in the past with high satisfaction. The flip tops are sturdy, and the box is made of high quality plastic that appear to be able to handle a decent amount of weight. Note that this has a pre-drilled hole on both sides for a padlock or zip tie which the 12-Gallon size does not. This is a great product. Although it can store quite a bit more than the 12-Gallon version, I would recommend this for those who have larger homes with 2 or 3 car garages where this can be stored.
