Inexpensive alternative
I am a new pool owner in South Florida and I have learned a lot by myself in a short period of time by researching online and by trial and error. This kit is accurate since everytime I compare my readings to the pool store they are the same. Chlorine is straight forward except for combined chlorine which other test kits have a sepparate test for. I really dont need the combined Chlorine measure and have been doing well without understanding it since it is an outdoor pool. Ph, acid demand and alkalinity are easy to read. At the beggining it takes time getting use to comparing the colors to the samples but with time you learn to identify the reading. The only thing I wish this test kit would have to give it 5 stars is the cyanuric acid test. Cyanuric acid works as sunblock for the chlorine, without it chlorine will not last in your pool which happened to me before learning this valuable piece of information.

A Little Confused-1st Timer
Until I found the pool and spa basic 5 test kit I relied on the local pool supply store to test our spa water. I followed the instructions as indicated and with the first part of the test I came to realize that this part of the test may not apply to Well Water because there is no chlorine. I proceeded to the next few tests only to realize I'm a little confused and then decided I think it's in my best interest to take a sample of our water along with my new test kit with me to my local pool company and ask them to explain to me exactly what am I looking for and how to do this myself.
I feel as if this kit offers everything that is needed, tests for chlorine, bromine, ph, acid demand and total alkalinity. Because this is new to me and the spa itself is new to me I will ask the experts then I will then be able to use this basic 5 test kit to provide me with confidence that I am relaxing in healthy germ free waters
My pool guy retired, and so I thought I would try to do the pool maintenance myself. Turns out it’s not that difficult. I had been bringing water samples to the local pool supply store, so thought I would try out this test kit as a time-saving alternative. I am not a chemist, nor do I care to be, so I was looking for something very straight-forward, leaving the scientific explanations of water chemistry behind.
It took about 10 minutes for me to go through the abbreviated instruction cards provided and to "run" the tests. In the future, I expect this time will be cut to under 5 minutes as I get accustomed to the process. You can run any one or more tests as you wish, the most common I suppose, being the test for chlorine content, which means that the test bottle for that particular test is likely to be consumed much faster than the other test bottles. I saw other comments posted that were unhappy to have to purchase the full complement of 5 replacement test bottles, when only 1 or 2 of them will be consumed more often; however, in view of the rather nominal cost of the complete bottle collection, it makes sense to me that a vendor doesn’t want to track multiple items of a very low-cost product. Wasteful perhaps, but since we’re talking about a few tablespoons here, I’ve got no issue with that.
The kit comes with a comprehensive paper-back booklet explaining the why’s and where-for’s of pool water chemistry, but as mentioned I didn’t spend much time with that. It also comes with 2 small postcard-size, plastic laminated cards that provide brief and concise test instructions and tables to help determine the quantity of chemicals to add to your pool. The test bottles are color coded, and (unless you’re color-blind) it is easy to determine the test results by matching the water color in the test tube to the color-key imprinted on the housing of the kit. No guessing, or measuring is necessary. All water quantities are clearly marked on the plastic kit housing.
I would guess that the paper booklet is bound to get wet over time, so having the information on water-proof laminate cards was a thoughtful plus. The bottles and tubes fit neatly inside a reusable/resealable plastic container for easy storage and transport. I think this is a simple to use, but comprehensive test kit that the average pool owner should have.
Got this to replace the test kit I bought at the pool supply store. It's basically the same thing but without the hard case which doesn't matter because I'll just use the one I already have. Everything else is exactly the same and works the same. Simple and easy to use. Directions etc are all included. Most of us just need the bottles anyway to replace the one or two that run out before the rest.
