The pole is 1" diameter x 1.2mm (T).
Can the top shelf be lowered a few notches so that the total height of the top shelf is something like 70 inches versus 72?
You can adjust the shelf. The post has a groove with a double line marking. It can help you to identify the height when you install.
Does the 48” industrial shelf unit HDX have the plastic shelf liners 48”x18” to purchase separately?
We do not produce this plastic shelf liner. Please check with THD store directly.

This unit only can install 4" Caster of SKU 563065. Storage unit with casters total weight capacity 600 lbs. *Weight capacity per caster 150 lbs evenly distributed Cannot support a total 2500 pounds to install the 4" casters. Do not exceed the recommended maximum weight limits and ensure wheel screws are fully inserted to avoid injury or tip over.
Can I add another shelf to this unit?
YES YOU CAN!! I added 2 shelves to mine to create a drawer system. I could not find the shelves here so ordered them from ULINE. The shelves can be adjusted in any manner you choose as long as you don't go over the weight Capacity
