Questions & Answers

How many pieces of 5/4 wood boards do I need to get for 96inch post? I just purchased two A8 and one C8 to utilize as a privacy panel on our patio.

Answer This Question

Hi Juan and thanks for reaching out. For a 6-foot high above ground fence, there are usually 12 boards in height (measuring 5.375'' in height) and if using our included 1/2'' spacers. Note: We suggest you measure the board you’ve chosen and add ½’’ for the HOFT Spacer between each board, then divide by the height of your post, considering how many inches you will start your first board, and leaving at least 2’’ at the top to place the Section Bracket & Cap. Please contact us directly at info@hoftsolutions.com for our technical drawing. Thank you and please have a wonderful day and Happy Holidays. HOFT Team.

Hi - I like the design of this product and am considering them for two 8" long adjacent (E & W) privacy "fences" for our patio. Question: With the anchor plates, could the 8" "in-ground" set be installed into concrete (anchored to posts or the house)?

    Answer This Question

Hi IDDude and thanks for reaching out. We only sell the 8’ (96’’) posts that are recommended to be anchored in 2’ of concrete footings for a 6’ high fence. They are not to be used at their full length above ground. We do not recommend using the HOFT 96’’ (8’) posts above ground, because the wind resistance would make 8’ panels unstable. However, professionals have installed 8’ panels by adequately securing to a wall, gazebo post, or anchoring to floor and ceiling (when used on some balconies). If used as such, they are no longer under our warranty. Anchor Plates and screws are not included with our 8' posts, so they would have to be ordered directly from our offices at info@hoftsolutions.com. Thank you and please have a wonderful day. HOFT Team.

can I use corrugated metal panels inserted in the channels-- they make corrugated panels ⅞"-- will this work?

      Answer This Question

Hi Debra and thanks for reaching out. Our HOFT posts rails are 0.7’’ deep x 1.125’’ wide. If the corrugated panels are 7/8'' thick then they should fit in our post rails. Thank you and please have a wonderful day. HOFT Team.

Can I use 1x6” pressure treated lumber as the slats even though the true dimensions are .75x5.5” or do the boards need to be a full 1” thick?
        ByOct 12, 2024

        Answer This Question

Hi Fuzzybluespy and thanks for reaching out. HOFT rails and spacers are designed for boards that are 1” thick finished. By choosing a 1” board, the actual thickness will be ¾”. The thinner the boards, the more they tend to wave and warp. If you want to use thinner boards, we recommend either reducing the span between posts to 5' (instead of 6’), or by reinforcing each finished panel with a 2”x 2” in the center at the back of the boards. NOTE: HOFT should not be used as a guard rail when using thinner boards. Our HOFT post groove is 1 1/8’’ so you can slide in anything that is thinner than this. However, it is recommended that you use 5/4 deck boards or an actual 1’’ thick board. A thicker material has less chance of bending. Thank you and please have a wonderful day. HOFT Team.

Do you have to use the spacers between the boards or can the boards be touching in the center? I'd prefer this fence without the gaps in the horizontal boards.

          Answer This Question

Hi Bron and thanks for reaching out. There is no problem with using no spacers, but please note that our spacers also act as nails. Having ½’’ spacers in between boards will also allow wind to go through and will reduce wind resistance. It is possible to put the boards one on top of each other but please make sure that the top 3-4 boards have the spacers to ensure a sturdier assembly, and for wind flow. NOTE: the ½’’ spacers between boards reduce the wind resistance. If you are using a tongue in groove, then you do not need spacers. It is important to use spacers if our product is used as a guardrail on an elevated deck. You may discard if you are using our posts as a concealing screen or other. If you are building a fence, we definitely recommend you use our section brackets included in each kit on the top last board to solidify your installation (especially important on an elevated deck and without the use of our spacers). Thank you and please have a wonderful day. HOFT Team.

Why do these cost 50% (or more) than the similar product made by Barrette?

            Answer This Question

Hi Paul, thanks for reaching out! Our HOFT 3'' x 3'' posts are made of aluminum, which will last a lifetime, compared to other products available such as steel products, that will rust, and vinyl products, that will easily break. Also, please note that our post kits include ALL parts needed for panel assembly whereas other products have their individual components sold separately which may seem less expensive at first glance. Let us know if you have any other questions! Have a wonderful day, HOFT Team

Can these posts be set in the fence post foam mix instead of concrete since these aren’t structural?

              Answer This Question

Hi Eric and thanks for reaching out. We recommend our HOFT 96'' in-ground posts be anchored in 2-feet of concrete and they have not been tested for installation in a post foam mix. We recommend the premix concrete of MPA28 quality or greater. Thank you and please have a wonderful day. HOFT Team.

Buyer beware purchasing from Home Depot and not HOFT. This product is only available at Home Depot and HOFT does not support you. We set our posts in 30” of concrete only to realize the hardware provided (rail blocks) did not actually fit the post. HOFT Customer service informed me I can return the malfunctioned posts to Home Depot and that they must be “damaged”. Well, kinda hard to return a post that’s set in concrete… No helpful solutions were provided. Seems like they should be able to help

The kit provided the frame for an excellent privacy fence on the side of our patio. This now allows us to enjoy this space without encroaching on our next door neighbor and vice a versa.

I had a good time installing the Hoft system. I used 2- 96 inch posts and one surface mount post. I liked the ones that I buried and concreted in. They were easier. I surface mounted the one on concrete. It was somewhat difficult to drill the holes. My biggest issue was the boards, it called for 1” thick boards, but you cannot find those easily. I chose to go with a standard 3/4 “ thick board. You could tell that they were thin, but the little spacers held them in place just fine. It looks exactly the same and they’re only 4 feet long so I highly doubt that they will warp. Overall I am satisfied with the way it turned out.

Hi DIYwannabe and thanks for the wonderful review, which we really appreciate. The 1'' boards with a distance of 4 feet between posts should not cause a problem whatsoever, seeing that you shortened the distance and which we usually recommend for thinner boards. Enjoy your HOFT fence and have a nice day. HOFT Team. HOFTSolutions

Great fence system overall. It takes some time to set the posts correctly to maintain the post heights and plan the steps correctly, but the end result is a very beautiful fence with both sides enjoying the “good” side. The system also allows for easy removal and replacement of board if needed or removal of a full set of boards for access down the road. We used ProWood 5/4 boards for fill and they look great. The boards dried out over the first week after installation and the Hoft system allowed for a quick compression of the boards downward and everything lined up horizontally because the bottom row was set level and at the same heigh between panels. Don’t be alarmed if the spacing seems off initially between panels if using Pressure Treated lumber for filling the panels.

                      Fantastic (but pricey) product
This produce is FanTaStic! I live in a very tight neighborhood where my neighbor's breakfast nook faces where I park and do my staging for garden work. So, I planned an attractive screen to give them more privacy. I had to wait months until this product was available in the U.S. It's only 18 ft. long; two end posts, two line posts set in concrete. I used western cedar (5/4X6) which is very difficult to find in my part of the country. The aluminum posts are heavy and strong and precisely manufactured. One coat of semi-transparant stain to help in UV protection. Pricey? Yes but I believe this screen is here for the long-run without the need for maintenance or renovation.
