Questions & Answers

How do I check the base of my toilet
ByJun 30, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hi, Mark - Interesting question! The gas leak detector will detect methane gas which is prevalent in sewer gases. However, the only way it can escape is during the flushing process when the toilet's outlet lines are temporarily out of water. We suggest you try the GLD during that time. As an aside, you might want to run it along the base of the toilet where it's mounted to the floor just to check. You'd most like experience a water leak if the toilet isn't sealed well, but an air and/or gas leak would be unlikely. Should you have any further questions, please contact our VPC Customer Service Team at (661) 257-3923 or send a not to productexpert@vpcglobal.com. Thanks.

How to use the gas detector

      Answer This Question

Hi, Sanchez - If you call me (Dave) at (661) 257-3923 x1026 or send me an email at productexpert@vpcglobal.com, I'd be happy to email you the instructions that are found on product's packaging. 1. Be in an area you know is free of gas and is not breezy. 2. Install new batteries. 3. Turn the unit on and let it calibrate. It'll "chirp" when done. 4. Test the divice by igniting a gas burner on a stove, blowing out the flame, then putting the device ~1 inch away. It should alert you to the presence of gas.

Does it detect natural gas leak outside?
          ByFeb 20, 2026

          Answer This Question

Hi, Danielle - Generally, yes the EGLD will detect natural gas (propane, methane, and butane too) outside so long as it is not extremely windy which tends to dissipate the gas. If you have any other questions, please contact our VPC Customer Service Team at (661) 257-3923 or send us an email to productexpert@vpcglobal.com. Thanks for your inquiry!

            Answer This Question

Hi, Randy - We're not quite sure of your question, but here are some suggestions. Once the GLD has been calibrated, put the sensor about 1" or so away from the joint or tubing being checked. As for overall sensivity, you'll want to make sure you do any calibration in a non-windy/breezy area you know is free of gas. Then move indoors to do your testing. It's also very unlikely this GLD will sense gas inside a building from the of outside the building. If that happens and it senses the presence of gas, call the fire department ASAP. If you have any other questions, contact our VPC Customer Service Team at (661) 257-3923 or send us an email to productexpert@vpcglobal.com. Thanks!

Can u walk around the house if there’s gas in air will it detect it
              ByFeb 11, 2026

              Answer This Question

Hi, Randy - Thanks for your inquiry. It's highly improbable that this gas leak detector would sense gas inside the home from the outside. Either that or there's a significant amount of gas inside the home. If that's the case, do not try to enter the house and call the fire department immediately. If you have any other questions, please contact our VPC Customer Service Team at (661) 257-3923 x1026 or x1010 or send us a note to productexpert@vpcglobal.com.

Does the job if you follow the instructions
Followed the instructions and it worked well. I used a stovetop as a test to confirm it was working. Afterwards I was able to diagnose a leaking gas line into my water heater. I believe most of the negative comments stem from people not calibrating it correctly with *clean air* or perhaps there’s a Q&A issue?

                    BAD FOR PROPANE
DISCLAIMER: I have no idea how this tool performs with natural gas, however I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it does not function accurately for LPG(Propane) performance is abysmal. Genuinely this should never be used for propane leak detection. As a control we held it up to an LPG tank with the bleeder valve WIDE OPEN, and it took an excess of 30 seconds for it to detect ACTIVELY LEAKING HISSING PROPANE.

Do not trust your family's safety to this "tool".
Bought this item 30 minutes ago to check for gas leaks in newly installed pipes. It showed green. Forcsome reason I looked online for reviews of this product after the fact and somebody mentioned using the stove to test it. I calibrated it, turned on the gas, and green light... recalibrate it to try again, turned on the gas, green light. Do not trust this "tool". Pay for the better one or call in the professionals. What a shame.

                        Not what I hoped for
Save your money. Calibrated it and put it in a known source of propane to test it at the stove and absolutely not. And yes I did it twice and checked batteries.

                          JUNK
Junk. Do not buy. I tested the sensor immediately after purchase using the natural gas jet on one of my stovetop’s burners. I had to hold the sensor directly on top of the jet that was BLOWING GAS for it to finally detect gas and respond. Extremely poor sensitivity.

                            Doesn’t work
Literally does not work. Purchased on my way to a call for gas smell. I could definitely smell gas, but quickly grew suspicious that this thing wasn’t working well. Out of curiosity I literally cracked open a gas line, held this thing to it, and it did not pick up anything. Buy literally anything else, this does not work.
