Q:How often do you have to replace the brass puff? Can you clean it, or does it get full of solder and need replacing?

Answer This Question

A:  That would all depend on how you use it and how often you use it. There is no way to give a definitive time on it since everyone has different soldering techniques.

A:  Hello there! Thanks for using Hakko products. The brass wire would need to be replaced over time, as it will degrade with usage and no longer clean as well. The brass wire is lightly abrasive so it works well at cleaning the tip without damaging the plating beneath the solder. With time the metal will degrade and since it is already soft and lightly abrasive, it has the potential of degrading and once it has degraded, it will not be as capable of removing oxide layers from the solder tip. Thanks. AHP

A:  I suppose you can clean it but it would be a real pain and it would never be as "puffy". Besides, its pretty cheap. If saving money is the goal then just use a wet sponge. Does the same job as this but one sponge will last a long time (TIP: Cut your sponge in half to double your savings)

A:  It depends on how prolific you are soldering. If you only solder a few times a month, it'll stay cleaner longer. My rule of thumb is: If it doesn't clean anymore or if it looks real bad, replace it.

Q:Can you also use this to prop up a soldering iron like a stand?

        Answer This Question

A:  No. This thing is VERY light. No way it would be able to balance a solderig iron safely. Even with the magnets I put under mine to keep it from moving it would not hold up the weight. Additionally, the soldering gun would heat up the wire inside and make it kinda like an oven and I am sure that would eventually melt the housing.

A:  Hi nf4, Thank you for your interest in Hakko Products. I would not recommend using this tip cleaner to prop up a soldering iron like stand. It's sole purpose is to clean and maintain your tips. If you have any further questions please let me know. Have a Happy Hakko Day!

        by|May 4, 2023

A:  No, it is not designed for that purpose. This is light and portable so you can pick it up and scrub the tip back and forth to clean the tip.

A:  No. This is only for cleaning.

            by|May 5, 2023

A:  This unit is very light weight and I doubt that you would want to prop anything up against it. As far as using as a soldering iron stand, NO it won't do the job.

From the pics it looks like plastic that would melt. Wow was I surprised! Yes it's a form of plastic but it DOESN'T melt! I rest my iron inside resting on the edge and it DOES NOT melt it. Never seen a type of plastic like this before!!! Therefore, I like it and it works and without melting. Amazing.

Very convenient -- just put soldering tip in and twist and it is cleaned and ready for more soldering.

Should have gotten one years ago. Ideal for keeping the tip of your iron clean and ready to go. Super easy to keep in my box of soldering tools. No big prep needed, just use it.
