I had someone else install it for me but they used 6" hole maker.

How to remove a wire that was inserted incorrectly

Asked by Mary October 27, 2019

Answer

Those quick connects usually have a little hole next to the insertion point that you can slide a wire through and press to release the wire. Sometimes those don’t work and if you twist back and forth while pulling it should release the wire and still be reusable.

Can these be used in a sloped ceiling?

Well yes, but the fixture will be sloped at the same angle as the ceiling.

What is the difference between H7RICAT and E7RICAT? Which one to choose?

Asked by DP3192 September 2, 2019

Answer

The E7RICAT is more compact for tighter spaces. The connection box doesn't sit off the housing as far as the H7.

Can the Halo H7 work in a 1 inch thick ceiling?

It'll be difficult to install as the prongs will be harder to push into place, but if you bend them out just a bit they should slide against the backside of the ceiling board and lock with some force.

Yes, but some inspectors might call out the fact that the metal retention might damage the Romex. But if your worried about meeting code you should be more worried about the fact that when using a remodel housing, you are unable to staple with in the cavity you are installing the housing inside of. Most inspectors would call that before focusing on the retention system of a light

Answers

I replaced 4 different fluorescent ballast light sets in my home with these. My install was probably a bit harder because I had to remove the existing lights from a recessed pocket, drywall over the area, and then install these. Word of advice - buy the 6" hole saw kit for your drill, it turns a long, tedious, and messy process into a much easier job.

Can this product be use to set on a drop ceiling Tile ?

Asked by Skip December 13, 2017

Answers

I would say that if you're going to go this route I would use the low-profile cans. These cans have a higher center of gravity and the connection box has some weight to it, so if your tiles aren't properly seated I could see them possibly lifting a bit (but I've never installed in a drop-ceiling before). The low-profile cans are quite a bit shorter and it puts the connection box much closer to the installation surface.

Is it shower rated

I don't believe it is, however, I used these in my shower reno and installed LED retrofit kits that were shower rated, and then ran a bead of silicone under the trim to seal it.

I have installed 22 of these lights over the past 8 months in my current home The best feature is the quick push connect for wiring. I have read complaints about the mounting tabs being very difficult to fully engage when securing the light. The angle of the black tabs usually needs to be bent open slightly more in order to be able to position the tab fully when mounting. This wasn't a problem on the last 2 lights I bought so maybe they are preset in a better angle now.

I Used a Bottle Jack on Top of a Ladder
I just finished installing 32 of these cans. I read the reviews regarding difficulties installing into 5/8 drywall. I tried pushing the light into the hole (I drilled my holes using the drill attached saw at Home Depot) but was not strong enough. So I got a small bottle jack, a flat piece of wood, and jacked the lights into the whole. It worked great! I loved the electrical box set-up. The connectors worked great (you don't need any wire nuts) and the built-in romex clamps made installation very quick.

Very Good Value - Installation Tip
The price of these lights is very good and installation went very smoothly. I am using them with 100 watt (equivalent), BR-40 LED bulbs. A lot of the reviews indicate that people have a problem installing the clips. I tried the method provided in the instructions and could not get the clips to lock into place. My solutions was to hold the clip against the can and insert an awl through the round hole in the clip and round hole in the can and push the end of the clip out at a slight upward angle. The clips pop right into place. Bought the box of six lights in the store. Made sure that the box was factory sealed before purchase. No damage, no missing parts and no problems.

These Can Work Well, Really!
I recommend this product only because the options are few and with some extra care, you can get the mounting clips to work with a simple step before use plus I like not needing to use wire nuts. By now everyone who has bought these has had the dreaded clip failure. The only thing worse than the clips are the instructions on how to successfully use the clips that secure the whole assembly onto your ceiling sheet-rock. The outer housing is very soft aluminum sheet. Often, following instructions will deform the housing in a way that will make the retainer clips useless. If the housing bends outward, you’re sunk. TIP: Before installing each unit, use a straight head screw driver to bend the slot in the aluminum sheet above the clip INWARD so that the peak of the clip can more easily make it to the outside of the can when doing the final install. You can do this with the clip in place or you can easily remove the clip and replace it after making the bend (see pics). That is how they are supposed to work and the clip will then lock against the can with the provided screwdriver notch. Note that the screwdriver notch is hidden under a peace of foam tape that must be there to conform to insulation contact requirements. Pic number 4 shows the notch with the foam tape pulled back. Just use a screwdriver in the notch to push the clip all the way up and if the peak of the clip is outside the can, it should work fine.
