sturdiness? If we were to cut it into 12" x 8' shelves, any idea what kind of weight they might bear?
            ByMar 13, 2024
            1 AnswerĀ |Ā
            Answer This Question

The load-bearing capacity depends on how it is connected to the wall. The thickness of the wood itself is 1 1/2 ", which is relatively heavy. Thank you for your interest.

I used this countertop as a custom built in desk for a client. It really took the color of stain she chose and turned out beautifully. I had a piece left over and it is now a portion of my kitchen counter. This is an outstanding product and it is always in stock. I'm certain I will be using it many times in future builds.

Loved so much I bought 2
Love the look! Super easy to finish. Once wood has been unwrapped be sure to condition BOTH sides with mineral spirits, I did not do this on the second board and it bowed slightly. I used Watco food safe oil that seems to be repelling water and gives a nice shine. It is still a work in progress. I took two 6' x 39" boards to make a 10', I used remaining 2' to make a raised breakfast bar. I supported the bar overhang with cheap brackets that I might change later.

Better For A Workbench Than A Countertop
Rookie mistake - I didn't open up the package in a timely manner to return this. Look at the photos, some seriously poor attempts at wood filling. I'm going to have to spend a couple hours with the belt sander to feel better about this, and unfortunately this countertop doesn't have a "good" side, just a bad one and a worse one. "Caveat Emptor!"

Abysmal quality, both structurally and finish.
Expect to put a significant amount of work in to making these usable. All pieces had running cracks and glue failures the length of the board; one was so bad the two halves were barely holding together and would immediately fail without extensive repair. Multiple gaps, cracks, and missing sections that required refinishing. Multiple gaps, missing chunks, and misalignments sloppily corrected with wood putty that doesn't match color. If you must buy, inspect in store first.

                      Used for a Workbench
I used this for a workbench for in my garage. I think it turned out pretty nicely - used tung oil for the finish.

I am thrilled with my countertops! DIY friendly!
I didn't have the budget for granite and was ready to move on from formica (which I'd put in 15 years ago) so butcher block was the compromise. It turned out so well, and has a unique look and feel that I didn't expect! I used Watco Butcher block Oil + Stain to get a darker color. I applied/sanded about 5-6 times to get this rich color and so far, is impervious to water. I am so very pleased with how it turned out. And other than the lifting (the island esp. was heavy) I did it all myself.

The counter was horribly finished, top had filler/glue not sanded, holes, and cracks. The bottom was worse, splinters, holes, cracks, and lots of glue/filler. It took hours to sand and the finish was still poor. I assume the company did not put it through the planer after assembly. Normally I would have returned it but it took a month to be delivered and needed to meet the schedule.
