When I opened the box...
this is what I saw. The person(s) who allowed this to be shipped should be fired. I'll have to drive to the nearest Home Depot which is an hour away to return this piece of junk. I reordered it and of course there was a price increase. I rarely write reviews but I had to let you consumers know what I received.

Decent product but beware of discrepancies!
We purchased 3 slabs in total. 2 in store and 1 we had to order due to length. The in-store slabs widths are the same and measured 25 1/4”. The one that was delivered several weeks later was 24 3/4”. We are able to make modifications with the last slab due to my husbands skill set. Just beware to any DIY homeowner wanting to handle this as a weekend project. All in all I love the counters, just want to give others a heads up.

Not worth the work
Like the 2x4 pile, the quality of this stuff is all over the place. We were exploring our options and given the wait time for quartz, we opted for the butcher block since we could do it faster. We bought one slab to take home and see if we liked it. We did. The quality of that slab was really good. All of the joints were tight, the color variation was minimal and both sides were useable. The other slabs we got were junk on one side and needed lots of filler/sanding on the other.

A solid, well-made, excellent quality countertop that we’re using in a basement utility room. Sharp edges were rounded off to be more user-friendly. Finished with a linseed oil/mineral spirits mix followed by 2 coats of polyurethane to protect surface. Heavy weight requires 2 people to move. Highly recommended.

very nice top!
I've been wanting a butcher block dining table for my lake house because it's not as deep as a regular table and can fit into a smaller dining space. I cut this 8 ft piece down to 5 ft. and I'm going to use the leftover 3 ft piece in my "butlers pantry" countertop. I'm going to use food grade mineral oil which is also made by Hampton Bay and can be purchased at Home Depot (see pic). I do a lot of bread baking and my countertop was too high for constant kneading, so this lower surface is great for me since I'm only 5'2". There is a "bad" side and a better side to this surface. On the good side, there were a couple of flaking wood spots, but I sanded those down so it's fine now. You will need heavy duty table legs for this SUPER HEAVY top which can also be purchased online through the Home Depot if you decide to use this as a desk or table surface. You must seal the surface within 48 hours of install according to manufacturer. I love the soft look and the functionality that I'll now have at my lake house with this top!
Nice and solid, ready to cut and finish to your needs.
I chose this piece of butcher block to make a top for a storage cabinet. I cut it to size with a circular saw. It cut easily despite being heavy wood and 1.5” thick. I used a pad sander to clean up the edges, then stained with BEHR’s water-based “Semi-Transparent Stain and Poly in One”. I’m quite pleased with the result. You’ll probably want to use a different finish if your intended use is for a food prep surface.
The top came sealed in plastic, and the instructions strongly urged finishing it within 48 hours of opening (see warning label pic). I got interrupted after staining the first side, and didn’t seal the second side for over a week. I did not notice any ill effects, but it’s good to be aware of the recommended deadline for finishing/sealing so you can plan ahead.

Hampton Bay 8 ft. L x 25 in. D Unfinished Birch Butcher Block Countertop in With Standard Edge
For the few several years, I have been thinking of gluing up a new benchtop for my basement workshop. After putting it off for so long, I decided to take the faster and easier route and ordered this butcher block countertop. After some sanding and treating with mineral oil, I wiped on six coats of polyurethane then installed the top. It turned out pretty nice, not perfectly flat, but fine for my use.
The top was a little longer than I needed, but cutting off 18 inches fixed that. It’s 1.5 inches thick and strong enough to support my vise cantilevered off one end. I drilled some ¾” holes for bench dogs and hold-downs. One thing, birch is not a very hard wood and dents easy enough, so, I use a piece of scrap plywood to protect the top when I’m pounding on it.
Good option if you're looking for a wood countertop
The Hampton Bay unfinished birch butcher block with standard edge is a very nice retail butcher block countertop. The product arrived undamaged in a slim box, and the countertop had an extra skirting of cardboard all around the edge, all within plastic shrink wrap. On initial inspection, the surface looked free from any serious blemishes, but I did find on one side many spots where wood filler was obvious.
Installation is as simple as any wood countertop. Don't forget to finish and seal it, and this should last for quite a long time.
NOT UNIFORM QUALITY; EXCELLENT POTENTIAL; NEEDS SEALING WITHIN 48 HRS. OF INSTALLING
The Hampton Bay 6 ft. L x 25 in. D Unfinished Birch Butcher Block Countertop With Standard Edge has the potential to be an excellent countertop depending upon the quality of the unit delivered. Although it is an unfinished countertop, the expectation was that it would have had a final sanding at the factory which our unit did not. One side of the countertop is very rough and unsuitable for most applications but that is OK if that side is down. See the photo. One of the two short edges is smooth and the other one is rough and did not seem to have been sanded. The better side of the butcher block countertop has a couple of rough areas and many intersections which do not make a smooth joint. Portions of the top have knots or colorations that are unappealing. 90% of the countertop looks fine. After sanding and applying the polyurethane, when viewing the butcher block from a distance, its potential becomes apparent. Upon closer inspection though, the negatives are still noticeable. It may be fine if someone wants a rustic countertop. For us, we decided that it would be detracting as a countertop so I will need to repurpose it. Since it is 1 1/2 inches deep, it should work well as a table, work area, or workbench. One surprise of the unit upon arrival was the note on the top saying that it needed to be sealed within 48 hours of installation. That information should be included in the online description. I would recommend reading the use and care guide online before purchasing since it includes requirements that may be limiting in some situations. Also, I would recommend trying the sealer on the underside first to see if you like the color. The polyurethane that we used colored the butcher block yellow whereas we would have preferred a clear color. The countertop is made in China.
