A review from a retired home builder and woodworker
As a retired builder who now just likes to tinker in our new home, I can tell you with great certainty that these are the last cabinets you'd ever want to waste your money on. I honestly should have sent them back the second I unboxed them. $4,200 worth of junk. On sale no less. Home Depot did give me a $1,000 back after I showed them the pics and complained but I should have just sent them all back instead. Here's the reasons I didn't and why they should have gone back... My wife and decided to sell our two homes, consolidate into one, downsize, and start enjoying life instead of working on the house all of the time.. After much searching (but without much luck) for a decent lot in a nice community, we decided to just buy what we wanted and be done with it. We elected to not have the homebuilder install cabinets nor closet organizers because of the exorbitant prices they were charging for such utility areas. And as a still "young enough" builder whose hobby over the past 40+ years is to build bars, wall units, cabinets, storage centers, etc that I would just do it myself, save the $$$ and enjoy doing what I love doing. That was all well and good until in between the sales of our two homes and moving into the new house, we discovered that I had to have surgery. Little did we know at the time that it would turn out to be three surgeries in 11 months. We closed on the house two weeks before Thanksgiving, in between surgery #2 and unexpected surgery #3 three days after Christmas. With moving two houses into one, the holidays, and medical issues, building cabinets was way down on the "priorities list." So I made the decision to just buy cabinets and install them myself. So off to Home Depot to shop for cabinets. We selected the upgraded plywood box, shaker style with soft close hinges and drawers shown here. Not expensive cabinets but not cheapies, either. I ordered the cabinets several weeks before closing on the new house. HD advertises that "in-stock" cabinets could be delivered within a week. In the middle of the Covid pandemic, all of that changed. OK. I get it. It is what it is. There are things we can control and there are things we cannot. Besides, as much as I wanted to get the laundry room and closets done, there was already a lot to do so when the cabinets get here they get here. I was told it would be 4-6 weeks from order to delivery. Eight weeks later my cabinets arrived. Twenty cabinets ordered. Three were damaged. Three were wrong. One was missing. Alrighty then. When I opened the first box, which was a base cabinet with a drawer, I immediately noticed that the door and drawers were not even close to being aligned. That's OK though. Once the cabinets are installed level and plumb, there are adjustments that can be made to correct this issue. That's provided that the cabinets are built straight and square to start with. Unfortunately, these cabinets were not. In fact, the cabinet boxes were basically just slapped together, sloppily glued, and shot with about two dozen staples. They weren't even squared up prior to be being glued and stapled. There was also no reason to shoot that many staples into the cabinets. The glue will do the trick of keeping the cabinets together. The staples are only meant to hold it together until the guy has dried. The drawer boxes however, were only shot with 8 staples total for all four corners. That's two staples per corner but with any glue at all. The boxes were built without any interlocking joints such as dovetails or rabbets. No glue on any of the four joints, just two staples per corner. How is that going to work??? What's worse is that the drawer box corners weren't even aligned before shooting them with just two staples. So maybe only two staples per joint and no glue was a blessing in disguise as I had to take each drawer box apart, realign then, and staple them back together. Only I used glue and six staples per corner. Four probably would have sufficed but once you take something like that apart, the fit and finish isn't quite the same. Besides, without the joints being interlocking, if something were to get stuck there's a good chance of pulling the drawer apart if any sort of force is exerted. Of course staples and glue will never be as good as a rabbeted or dovetail joint but that's what I had to work with. Maybe one of these days when I'm done healing and the rest of the house is done, I will tinker and build new drawer boxes correctly. Again, that is way, way down the priority list. There are two other important points about the drawers that I should mention...The first being that the drawers are only 18" deep. The base cabinets are 24" deep. That is valuable storage space that is not being utilized. Drawer depth on a 24" base cabinet should be a minimum of 20". When I build my cabinets my drawers are 22" deep. After all, why are you installing cabinets in the first place? For storage, correct? That's a bad decision to cheap out on, Hampton Bay. The second point about the drawers that is as important is, remember when I said that the doors and drawers can be adjusted to align with each other after installation? That's providing everything is assembled straight and square. I installed the cabinets using a laser level. It doesn't get any more accouter than that is I know that the cabinets are installed straight, level, and plumb. However, the drawer faces were attached at the factory off-center and not parallel to the drawer box. There is nothing that you could adjust them. I had to remove the drawer faces and reattach them to the drawer boxes straight and parallel myself using new screw holes. The two screws that hold the drawer faces onto the drawer box on two of the drawers were drawn in so tight at the factory that they protruded out of the drawer face. THAT is not fixable. I have some tricks up my sleeve to make that less noticeable but how many people have my experience? Besides, these cabinets are being used in my laundry room and in our two walk in master closets. If anybody were to use these in their kitchen that assembly mistake would not be acceptable in any way, shape, or form. Can you say "quality control?" The cabinet boxes were assembled so far out of square I had no choice but to take them apart and reassemble them. The cabinet sides from one cabinet to the next were different heights, making it impossible to make the tops and/or bottom edges even on cabinets that are attached side by side. The cabinet bottom (floor) and top rails were tight in some places and as far as ⅛" open in others, making it all but impossible for the cabinet sides to be parallel to each other. Many edges of the interior veneer were chipped out because the panels were either not cut the correct way or the saw blades were dull. For this much trouble I should have just built them myself. NOBODY should ever have to take apart and reassemble any part of a store bought cabinet prior to installation. Accidental damage from shipping happens. Slip-shod workmanship doesn't just happen. I cannot being to tell you how aggravated I was with these cabinets and Home Depot. I wouldn't even expect to have such a poor level of quality even if I had purchased cheap entry level cabinets, let alone an upgraded brand name. Home Depot should be ashamed of these cabinets and should consider discontinuing the product line. I should be ashamed for not just having Home Depot pick them up and refunding my money. With my health circumstances, time, and the pandemic all taken into account, I really didn't have much of choice but to keep them and repair what needed to be repaired. Fortunately for me I was able to do what I was needed to make them right and get them installed. That isn't going to be the case for most people. If you decide to buy these, remember...you've been warned.

The drawer fronts do no line up with the cabinet body and because the guides are NAILED, there is no way to adjust! If you used screws to mount the drawer guides at lease I could adjust.

Just picked up our online order last night. Really love the look and was happy when I initially open the box but when checking drawers I noticed the top drawer was nailed together wrong which makes the drawer uneven and not flush. Drawer doesn’t open as smooth as the other drawers. The front piece of the drawer was also not attached even with the other front pieces. It was basically attached off centered. Looks like I will have to return or try to fix on my own.

For off the shelf cabinets, these are not bad. Real plywood boxes not particle board a super bonus. The top drawer face is set higher than other designs so I had to use spacers under the countertop. This led to me having to raise the outlets above the counter an inch higher. A bit of a hassle but not too bad.
