I would like to use as a workbench top. Is the butcher block constructed well enough for that. I may even double up to get to almost a three inch top
Asked by: Andy
Definitely would make an excellent workbench top. No need to double up either as long as it is installed properly. And I would not hesitate mounting a vice to it either, and that is what I plan to do this Spring when I clean out the garage. I bought three of these for an AV stand, but will getting more for the garage.

I'd like to cut this into 6 smaller pieces to use as floating shelves. Would I be able to install these using 5/8" threaded rods as supports (one end of the rod goes into a wall stud, the other end goes into the edge of the board)? Can this countertop take a drill hole into the edge? Each shelf will be 8" deep, so drill hole will be 5 or 6" deep.
Asked by: Homebody
This will be able to do that as long as you pre drill the holes.

6 ft. 2 in. L x 2 ft. 1 in. D x 1.5 in. T Butcher Block Countertop in Unfinished Birch is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 794.

One side had several areas filled with a tiny amount wood-putty, or small knots, etc., but I simply made the other side, "up". Mine had several handling-blemishes that probably happened after it left the factory. I ended up sanding down the surface to remove some surface scratches, and one corner had a chunk missing, so I sanded the corner to be more rounded. Once installed, it's not noticeable unless you point it out. I finished mine with 3x coats of clear, matte finish, and it looks great. The surface finish is flawless, after careful prep and finishing. It's not perfect, but it is very good, and if you're more careful than I was to select one with few blemishes, you may get one that is perfect. Overall, for the price, and with no shipping cost, this exceeded my expectations and is a very good value. (The next-best option I found that met my needs was more than double the price, after-shipping costs.)

I made a large island counter-top using 5 different sections (3 four-footers and 2 six-footers). I was impressed by how exact and square the product is, and the wonderful grain and clean surface. For those interested, I stained this with water-based American Walnut and sealed it with food-grade mineral oil. I am very happy with the look of the finish. I got an estimate to have this exact counter-top fabricated, and it ran ~$7,000, which did not include the structural supporting frame. I was able to do it myself for under $1,000 (including stain, seal and support frame hardware--spindles and angle-iron). Note: the bottom of these blocks is not nicely filled and finished like the top. If you need both sides to look nice, this is not the product for you. For counter-tops, these are fantastic.

There was some slight warpage after I applied clear finish to one side of the top. The packing sheet noted that finish or sealer needs to be applied to all surfaces within 48 hours of breaking shrink wrap seal. It straightened out after applying finish to the other side.

Holes on the bottom ( NOT A SHIPPING COMPLAINT! THE MISSING CHUNKS WERE NOT IN THE SHRINK WRAP EITHER. THEY WERE COMPLETELY MISSING WHEN SHRINK WRAPPED FROM FACTORY)... if it wasn't for the missing chunks/holes on the bottom it would have gotten 5 starts

I was debating on leaving it and just sealing. But decided to go with a dark stain. So glad I did! It shows the grain so beautifully! Now I have a perfect 10 Ft desk!

Packaging was well thought out in protecting my purchase. This thing has some weight to it and should last a lifetime with the correct care. I applied 4 coats of food grade mineral oil and it’s absolutely pristine!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The wood overall is beautiful. The complication is occurs when... The wood overall is beautiful. The complication is occurs when you start the process of treating it. Outdoors, we applied three coats of spar urethane (wood finish for boats) because we live next to saltwater, and the countertop would be next to the water, outdoors. The board began to warp, with the outer, long edges raising up, after we put a coat on top, and were waiting for it dry to put a coat on the bottom. The glue seemed to be separating or weakening in some areas. We think the board drew moisture into the uncoated side while the coated side was drying. I think that the instructions should be more aggressive so everyone gets a better result. It is beautiful, and it looks great, though slightly warped, out by the water, glued to two concrete columns. Ours was an outdoor application and the humidity was in the 80's. If you were to bring it into a climate-controlled environment and oil both sides, it would probably not warp at all. They key is to treat both sides at close time intervals so that one side doesn't draw in moisture. I gave it less than five stars because the instructions should address best practices to prevent warping and weakening of the glue bonds. Would I buy it again, yes.
