We finished these with 180-grit before we ship it. A few passes at 220 would work.

Just coat it with clear water-base polyurethane. No stain needed. Pick gloss, semigloss, or satin and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. You should apply at least three coats, but four or five will give a more durable finish.

I use angle brackets and screws on the inside of the cabinetry. Don't forget to seal the bottom of the butcher block prior to installation.

I know you should treat it within 48 hours of hetting it bit do you have to let it climatize first? Ive heard you would need to for 5 days.

Asked by Kditty September 9, 2020

Just make sure you treat these in a week. I said 48-hrs on the instructions---however a few years ago I said a week but people simply forgot---thus my newly stressed 48-hr warning. Acclimating is a fine idea but usually not necessary.

Could unfinished Birch be used outdoors? AM Direct sun to mid afternoon.

You would not want it to get wet. Sunlight over time will cause some drying out and discolor. I would try and put some kind of protection on it. Check some U tube videos and see what others are doing. For me, I would not leave it unprotected being inside or outside.

Mr. Mike. Use a domino or biscuit joiner for those mitered cuts.

Purchased 8ft countertop to use as a desk. If legs are set near the corners would we need any support to prevent sagging?

Asked by Nick September 1, 2020

Answers

NOPE. These are super strong butcher blocks. Each stave (strips of wood) are turned 90" to make these tough. No need for center support.

Could this be used as a desktop by just adding four legs?

It may need something in the middle. We have been using it as a desk top for years, but I have 3 file type cabinets holding it up. One on each end and one in the middle. Ours is the 12 ft. So smaller would probably be great. With 4 legs. Ours has held up great.

Bad Piece
I have purchased three countertops for my kitchen and I am only having issues with one. There are terrible knots and cracks throughout the entire board and are getting worse with the days. We made to sure have then properly acclimated, oiled, and yet just one is failing me miserably. Super disappointed that the quality isn’t consistent.

Buy them!
Customer review from logo
The countertop is fantastic, very high quality. It cuts and sands well and is very nice to work with. The shipping was slow but that's due to the border and covid. I bought two of these and am using them for kitchen, bath and for a built in in my bedroom.

Holes and cracks
This is a heavy duty decent quality butcher block with the exception of gaping holes and cracks. It was delivered almost a week ago, I didn’t open it immediately. When it was opened for use My people told me that maybe it would be less noticeable after gel staining it and it’s something maybe I could live with. Nope. Not at all. I expected for A $100 butcher block it would be a solid board, but it’s not. Can’t be returned after opened and painted. There are cracks even on the side of this board as if it may split totally.. I’m unhappy with my purchase. I wish I could return

I had the item shipped to home, and it came more protected than I expected which was nice. My piece did have some issues though, on the top side there are two lines where the piece must have got stuck going through the planing machine. It is smooth at that point, but noticeably messed up. One line is really noticeable and the other is faintly noticeable. It is only on the top side, the bottom side has many knots with holes in them. If either issue wasn't there I could have just flipped it, but since both sides had an issue I had to choose. Since it was for a computer desk it didn't matter as much, I would not have been happy had it been for a kitchen counter though. If you want it for the kitchen I would suggest going to the store and picking out the one you want.

Got this for my first ever wood working project. I used it as a desktop for my sit stand work desk. I ended up using the bottom side as my top side. It had more character vs the actual top side, which was quite plain. I used a matte finish from Varathene and the end result is gorgeous.

Stunning butcher counter, turned antique cabinet, into a wonderful center island in my yurt kichen!
I had picked up a fantastic antique oak counter for 25.00!, but it didn’t have a top...I wasn’t sure what to use, being that the cabinet is 8 ft long, and 22” wide. A friend had mentioned seeing the birch butcher block counters in Home Depot...so I went in and was very impressed with the workmanship of these counters. It’s a solid, heavy piece, which meant quality for me, and for a great price! I put it in my car, headed home, and excitedly put it on top of my antique counter! Voila! Instantly, I had a beautiful and functional piece! I then coated it with three coats of pure Tung oil...The color of the wood grain popped, and the finished piece looked beautiful! What a great find! Great price, and quality! Highly recommend! Plan on buying another soon!!
