There's only one shelf. You can choose install it right side or left side.
No back at all on this cabinet?
The back is finisned with varnish the same as the front's.
Can it be used outdoors?
This product can be used outdoors, but it is not suitable for use in extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow and storms. So it is more recommended that you use it indoors.

Is this item functional if you do not add the shutters? I am struggling to find a 2 tier shoe storage bench that is 15"+ deep. Thanks!
I don't own one yet, but leaving the sliding shutters out of the assembly should have absolutely no bearing on the structural capacity of this item. Sliding doors need a strong support above them to keep them from bearing the load and binding,
Sorry, I recommend you install the shutters. Not instruction will influence the stability.
