Q:If my mobile Rv repair guy used this on my Rv fiberglass roof- was it the right stuff to use for waterproofing? He said it would be. I need it to not leak ! If it needs to come off what do you suggest on how to go about that ?
by|Apr 10, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Memeep, Henry 587 Dura-Brite is not a waterproof product. While Henry 587 has good weatherization properties and does offer some protection from the rain as long as there are no ponding or standing water areas, Henry 587 is primarily designed to reflect the sun's damaging UV rays and to cool the roof as well as the interior of the structure. Henry 587 will only stand up to ponding water for 48 hours. As far as removing the product from your roof I am not sure what you would have to do. If it is truly stuck to your roof you might want to just leave it alone. If you have any areas that have standing water you could coat over those areas with Henry 887 TropiCool 100% Silicone since it is a waterproof product.

    Q:How many sq ft coverage
    by|Apr 9, 2024
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Tommy, the coverage rate of Henry 587 is 100 square feet per gallon. A 4.75 gallon bucket will cover 475 square feet. If this is the first time coating your roof you will need to apply two coats. Coverage can vary a bit depending on how rough or how dried out you roof surface is.

Q:Can this be put over Henry 201 Fibered Black Asphalt Roof Coating?
      by|Apr 8, 2024
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  George, Henry 201 is an asphalt and solvent based coating that is used as a re-saturate product for composition, smooth surface or mineral surface cap sheet roofs. You can coat over Henry 201 with an Aluminum roof coating such as Henry 555 or Henry 869 Rubberized Aluminum which is also asphaltic and solvent based. You will need to wait for at least 4 months prior to coating with an aluminum product. We do not advise the application of an acrylic like Henry 587 Dura-Brite over a solvent based product such as Henry 201.

Q:does this seal my granulated flat roof ?
        by|Apr 3, 2024
        1 Answer
        Answer This Question

A:  Karl, if in your question you are referring to 587 as sealing your roof from standing water then the answer is no if the standing water lasts for more than 48 hours. Henry 587 Dura-Brite is a high solids formula that offers better weather protection, solar reflectivity and longevity than economy grade reflective roof coatings. If you need a coating that is waterproof you can use Henry 817 Roof Guard urethane/acrylic with a 25 year warranty or Henry 887 TropiCool 100% Silicone with a lifetime warranty.

Easy to apply and adheres very well old camper roof. Clean up of hands is easy with Mule wipes. Pricy but I believe it's worth it.

Drp, although we are happy that you are so satisfied with Henry 587 Dura-Brite Acrylic White roof coating, the one we usually recommend for campers, RVs, motor homes and trailers is Henry 887 TropiCool because of it's rather unique bonding characteristics. Over the road travel adds extra stresses to these types of roofs and Henry 887 won't peel or crack over time. Thank you for putting your trust in the Henry Co and the Home Depot.

          don't use on ponding roofs!
I purchased 20 gallons of durabrite ACRYLIC white elastomeric roof coating,  cleaned and prepped the roof, and let it dry, then applied first coat.  I  waited 24 hours then applied the second coat. After after 2 months, I noticed there was wrinkling and it was bubbling in places where water was ponding.  I contacted the company, and the company said you use the wrong product…this doesn't work with roofs with ponding water.  They would not honor the 10 year warranty, and told me to buy and use the silicone based coating.  Where was that in all the reviews and instructions?

Response from Henry CompanySep 12, 2023
Rick, we are sorry that you were not happy with the performance of Henry 587 Dura-Brite. Henry acrylic roof coatings are designed to reflect the damaging UV rays of the sun and to cool both the roof surface and the interior of the dwelling. Henry 587 is not a waterproof product and should never be used to stop leaks or in areas where water stands for more than 48 hours. On the front of the Henry Dura-Brite label there is a "WARNING" in bold letters. Underneath the warning it says "See Back Panel for Precautionary Information". In that area it says "NOTE" ponding water resistant for up to 48 hours. For older low slope roofs where depressions pond water for extended periods, Pond Patch is recommended to provide positive slope in those areas to eliminate ponding. Follow all product label instructions before coating". You can also address your ponding water areas with a coating of Henry 887 TropiCool 100% Silicone. Henry 887 is waterproof and permanently ponding water resistant. There are a great deal of roof coating/roof repair products on the market all of which have very specific instructions for their use and their application on their labels. It is incumbent upon the purchaser to read and follow all of the label instructions to achieve the results desired. Again, we are sorry that you were dissatisfied with your expectations of how Henry Dura-Brite would perform. Please contact us directly at jszymanski@henry.com in the future if you have any questions about the application of any other Henry products. Thank you for your comments.
We used this method n a storage container. We put two coats on as it suggested. I took a reading from a digital thermometer and it was 10-15 degrees cooler on the inside metal compared to another one next to it! Great product.

JMorgan, nice comments about how effective our acrylic white coatings are. All of our Henry acrylic white coatings are highly reflective so that they reduce the heat on the roof and defend against the destructive UV rays of the sun. You can actually feel the effect of the coating just by walking into the interior of the building or container. Thank you for putting your trust in the Henry Co and the Home Depot.

Saves $40 per month in Phx & Lowers indoor temp10f
Painted this onto my 15 year old white shingles roof. Used 8 buckets painting with 18 inch Wooster pro roll brush and extension handle. Amazing how little my air conditioning and attic fan runs now. Have tons of insulation but already seeing ac bill drop 40$ a month compared to previous summers. Normal bills are 200 to 250. Now with white roof it is 150 to 180. Thank you so much henry! Amazing product!!!

              Good deal for the price.
A bit thinner than I remember it being but appears to be good enough to last a few years. Wasn't about to spring for the hundred bucks plus formula!

              R/V roof
I bought this product last Saturday and had the paint department shake it given I would be applying it directly when I got home to our camper roof. It was a nice sunny day in the low 70's with around 50% relative humidity. I finished up applying 2 coats around 5:30pm that afternoon. The next morning I checked the product to make sure it wasn't tacky given we were expecting some rain latter that day to see if I should get it under cover and it seemed fine. During the light rain that started around 1:00pm I noticed the product didn't bead the water, but it was running off well given I had it tilted with the tongue jack. The next day I noticed several spots that had bubbled up. So I blew off the remaining water and fallen leaves to take some pictures and noticed the leaves had actually stained the white finish. I attached a picture of the largest area that's still there several days later. I called Henry technical assistance and got ahold of Greg. He kept interrupting me before I was able to finish explaining and was actually quite rude until I told him my line of business...then he got quiet. I asked him about cure time and he couldn't seem to give me a straight answer. He told me I needed to immediately power wash the product off twice to remove the product. I asked him about the perimeter aluminum trim pieces that I sanded prior to application and he stated the product would not come off those. Well those have small bubbles on them too. I will be removing what I can and applying another product that won't be this brand. Thank goodness for Home Depot, as I returned what was left in the can for a refund.

bwguardian, it is unfortunate that you had an issue with the application of Henry 587. While 587 resembles a paint product, it's characteristics are much different. Because of the thickness of the coating it is not recommended to be mixed in a paint shaker. The label suggests that product be mixed mechanically using either a stir stick or a paddle with a drill and should be mixed thoroughly. Since Henry 587 is a water based acrylic roof coating, it is imperative that the weather and environmental conditions be given as much consideration as the condition of the roof surface it is being applied to. It is for those reasons that we don't recommend the application of Henry 587 if the humidity is high or rain is expected within 24 hours. Both humidity and temperature can greatly affect the drying time as well as the time it takes for the product to fully cure properly. More importantly, the application should be scheduled so that the coating has at least two hours to dry before nightfall. Because of the higher solids content of roof coatings, the cure time expectations are much longer than a paint product. Although the surface of the roof coating may feel dry to the touch, due to it's thickness, it still requires the time to evaporate the liquid trapped below the surface.

Rain Washed Away After Seven Days Of Drying
I applied the Acrylic Reflective Elastomeric Roof Coating in hot dry weather doing so over a period of days. A week after finishing the project we got a heavy rain. The coating that had been applied nine days or longer before the rain did fine. However, the coating that had been applied seven days before the rain washed off. This product should only be used during long dry spells which are rare where I live. Henry really needs to improve their formulation for better drying time.

Good stuff - the final ingredient in flat roof restoration
Nine years ago I coated equal-size sections of a large garage roof with Henry 587, Henry 287, and a competitor's product. The 287 fared the worst, the 587 is still doing fine. So I used it again on this roof restoration project. After repairing the surface, coating it with 107 asphalt emulsion, and embedding T272 roofing fabric in the final layer, I put on two coats of 587 for solar reflectance and UV protection. Looks great and really cooled the roof down.
