Questions & Answers

Will heating Henry’s roof saver make it easier to go through a pump sprayer. i’ve tried a pump sprayer with different nozzles and the product is too thick to spray
ByNov 17, 2024
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Russell, you should not heat Henry 812 RoofSaver. RoofSaver should be applied at the temperature of at least 50 degrees or above. You will need to keep the pump sprayer at maximum pressure and it helps to have a small container of water to dip the spray nozzle into fairly often to keep the product from clogging.

Can a HVLP spray system work? Or is an airless system only recommended? Thanks

Proxybox, we have not tested High Volume low pressure systems with this product, you would need to test it to see if it would work for you.

I've lost granules on my south facing roof since it is exposed to the sun. I was contemplating buying matching ceramic granules and spraying a coat, sprinkling granules and then another light coat. Would this work?

      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

proxybox, it would be better to roll on the Henry 812 and then scatter the granules to the point of rejection over the coating to make sure that you have good adhesion. It should not be necessary to apply a second coat over the granules.

What type of spray gun do I use
        ByNov 1, 2024
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Paul, if you want to apply Henry 812 RoofSaver with a spray gun you can use a normal airless paint sprayer that can produce 500 to 1,000 PSI. You should use a 0.30 to a 0.40 tip or if using a fan tip it would be a 519 or 530 which would give you a 10" wide spray at 1 foot off the surface.

If a air sprayer is used and I have a pitch roof, 1000sq foot house. How much area would that cover.

          Answer This Question

Kitty, Henry 812 RoofSaver has a suggested coverage rate of 200 square feet per gallon. Rough surfaces vary the coverage rate to about 100 square feet per gallon depending on the porosity and roughness of the substrate.

Is this like a glue? Does it seal? Or just moisturize?

            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Rick, Henry 812 is a sealer that is designed to lock in the granules on aged shingles and prevent further granule loss. It is not a waterproof product but it does help make shingles a bit more water resistant. The sole purpose of Henry 812 is to make old shingles last up to 5 years longer.

How I install it on the roof
                BySep 16, 2024
                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

Mike, Henry 812 RoofSaver can be applied by spray, roller or brush. If spraying the sealer should be applied in one thin pass with just enough sealer to mist the granules . Avoid drips and runs especially on steep-slope roofs and in overlapping areas. Over application of the sealer may result in streaks or uneven drying. Over application of the sealer does not hinder its ability to protect the roof and is only cosmetic in nature. If using a roller use a 1/2" nap roller or if brushing use a soft-bristle paint brush. Evenly apply the sealer in a single thin pass.

The product permanently colored my roof brown.
The product is advertised to dry clear. I applied 6 cans with a sprayer and after it dried my homes former white roof is now several shades of white, grey and brown. I contacted Henry, sent pictures and information and Henry takes no responsibility for the malfunction of their product. I will have to replace the shingles to restore my homes roof.

Bill, we are sorry to hear about your experience with Henry 812 RoofSaver. Henry 812 is an opaque color prior to it's application on the roof and dries to a clear finish. After looking for your complaint with Product Support I cannot find a complaint that was registered. If you can supply us with the report number it would be easier for us to look into this matter. Please reach out to me at jszymanski@henry.com as soon as it is convenient for you to do so. Applying this product
Just put another 4 gal. On with a pump sprayer (dewalt 2 gal). Strained it with a paint cloth strainer had zero problems. When I first put it on (9 gal) I couldn't get thru 1 gal with it clogging up the sprayer I used the dewalt 2 gal and used the the brass tip and screwed it down all the way and kept it pumped to the max, worked great

Rodney, it sounds like you found the solution for applying Henry 812 that worked for you. Henry 812 can be applied with a pump sprayer as long as the pressure is kept at the maximum and the tip is periodically dipped in a container of water to prevent it from clogging. Thank you for putting your trust in the Henry Co and the Home Depot.

                      Appling this
This stuff was is very thick but the best way I found is with a quality pump sprayer I use the dewalt 2 gal. The secret you HAVE to stain this stuff when you putting it in the pump, or it will clog it up, it looks like it going to work time will tell, the 200 sq ft was spot on.

Rodney, Henry 812 is a little thicker than water and normally does not need to be strained. Granted it is easier to apply with a paint sprayer but it can be applied using an pump up sprayer as long as the pressure is kept high and the tip is periodically dipped in water to keep it from clogging. Thank you for putting your trust in the Henry Co and the Home Depot.

Looks like it will be a good product
This stuff is VERY thick. I purchased a good quality sprayer with some fan tips. I sprayed the first gallon without much trouble. I had a container of hot water that I kept swishing the sprayer tip in. By the third gallon it would hardly spray. I got through that batch and called it quits for the day after covering about 500sq ft. I took the sprayer apart and there was a filter in the handle that was completely clogged. I will spray the next batch without the filter and see how it goes. After it was dry, you can see a nice clear coat over the gravel, well locked in.

Chuck, Henry 812 should have a consistency that is just slightly thicker than water. You may have purchased some product that was missed in it's normal rotation and sat on the shelf for a period that was longer than expected. We are happy to see that you were pretty satisfied with the results though. Thank you for putting your trust in the Henry Co and the Home Depot.

This is a great product, but i believe its overpriced. It seems to be doing the job for now, time will tell. It did leave the section of my light tan shingled roof that i applies it to darker.

Piper1233, Henry 812 RoofSaver is a unique product that, like you said, "is a great product". There was a great deal of R&D that went into creating a product that can extend the life of a shingled roof. The Home Depot liked the product so much it was listed as one of their top 10 most innovative products of the year and is an exclusive product of Home Depot. Thank you for putting your trust in the Henry Co and the Home Depot.

The true test of this product will be over time, but I'm pleased with Henry's innovation to delay inevitable roof repairs or replacement in problem areas. My application is a shallow valley on a low-pitch porch roof gable, with 35 year-rated shingles that are now 28 years old. The valley collects and traps leaves all year, which shortens roof life. My close up pic here shows the shingle deterioration that has resulted. Henry's approach is to provide a weather seal on the shingle surface that will inhibit leakage and slow aging. It suggests about 200 SF of coverage which seems about right - the 100 SF or so that I treated today used about half the can. I started with a 1/2" nap roller but that didn't cover the low spots nor did it get into the critical tab gaps. I switched to a handheld airless sprayer which atomized the sealer beautifully and applied it in just a couple of minutes. A finely atomized garden sprayer would probably do fine as well. The sealer has the appearance and consistency of milk and needed very little mixing. It cured (became transparent) within 30 minutes and is indeed water repellent after 8 hours. I assume the acrylic latex base will remain flexible for heat expansion. Again, time will tell on whether it lasts. But for the cost and easy application, it's definitely worth a shot.

HENRY 812 ROOFSAVER CLEAR SEALER IS A SHINGLE COATING DESIGNED TO PROVIDE SHINGLE PROTECTION BY EXTENDING THE LIFE OF AGED SHINGLES AND LOW-SLOPED. This product is useful for older roofing to extend the life. It will not seal a gaping hole. Read the instructions for best results. Also apply safety practices when working on any type of roof. It's an inexpensive way to extend your roof life.

I regretted acquiring this product the moment I began to open the box it which it arrived. I pulled up one flap and before I could continue my wife started screaming that there was a terrible chemical smell in the house. I immediately whisked it outside to continue, but when I walked back in one half hour later, the house still smelled like the neighborhood around the asphalt plant on 92 st in Manhattan did. DON'T BRING IT IN THE HOUSE IF ANYONE IS SENSITIVE TO THIS KIND OF THING. You see from the second picture that there is a lot of flexibility in application procedures. My roof is only 4 years old, with a 40 year guarantee, but I applied some in a small area (far from my wife) and it went on easily enough. Will it work? I'll get back to you in thirty years. Notice the warning on the can in the picture. I was out of my league to start, and hadn't prepared properly.

The Henry 812 RoofSaver Clear Sealer Shingle Coating to Extend Shingle Life – 0.90 Gal appears to be another great product from Henry. I have been using their products for more years than I can remember. We have a garage that soon we will be rebuilding, but in the interim I needed a product to reduce the granule loss on the roof until I have time to rebuild the structure. If this product is as good as all of their others that I have used over the years, then it should perform flawlessly. Henry has been the go to product for a long time. And it does dry clear.

It's really difficult to truly give a full review on a product like this as I won't know if it really works well for a few years. That said, the application to my roof was fairly easy as I have a simpler design without steep pitches. It does take more than you would think and make sure you read the directions and apply it properly. If you want to save money, I would recommend applying it to the high "traffic" areas such as the bottom couple of feet of the roof edge and any areas where you have two sections of a roof meet at an angle.
