Can I install this on top of existing faced fiberglass as a performance additive for challenged locations? i’m also considering just putting in Rock wool. If I can’t lay your product, can I use it as a full replacement unfaced?

    Answer This Question

Ronco, since the Ultra-touch does not have a vapor retarding facer like the fiberglass with either a kraft faced or foil facer, it can go over existing faced and unfaced fiber glass insulation.

Does a vapor barrier need to be installed either inside or outside of insulation to protect from moisture buildup? Plan on heating garage during the winter.

      Answer This Question

John, in a garage you might need a thermal or ignition barrier, like 1/2”-5/8” drywall, you should check your local building codes.

Can I use this to insulate my garage?

        Answer This Question

Kendall, we don't see why you couldn't insulate your garage with R-13. You can install R-13 in exterior walls. An exterior wall is any wall that faces outside or otherwise separates conditioned spaces from unconditioned spaces. An installation guide for R-13 can be found on the Henry website. Henry.com. Type in R-13 Insulation in the question box, click on residential, click on insulation. Click on the picture of R-13, scroll down to the bottom and you will find the installation guide. In a garage you might need a thermal or ignition barrier, like 1/2”-5/8” drywall, you should check your local building codes.

bert, R-13 UltraTouch is not designed to be used on an exterior brick wall. R-13 should be used between open roof rafters, ceiling joists and wall studs.

            Answer This Question

There is no mention in our technical data that indicates that R13 Ultratouch would attract rodents. In addition, there are no complaints that we know of about rodents being attracted to R13.

I'm remodeling a basement under a 100 year old cottage, with ship lap floors that creak and carry all the sound from below up and the same from the main floor to the basement. I'm using this Denim batt because it has a good soundproofing rating, is competitively priced and it doesn't itch. I'm nearly finished and I really couldn't be more pleased. Easy to cut, hang

As an insulation contractor, I can say this product is much better than fiberglass for sound retention. It is also better insulation, though not as good as spray foam. Fiberglass allows internal thermal looping which minimizes its effectiveness.

This stuff is so super easy to work with, and for the added sound insulation and absence of glass fibers or hazardous materials, it was well worth the added minimal cost to purchase. Be aware that 12 bags of this insulation (all included in the purchase price) means you are receiving one HUGE pallet; towering over eight feet tall. I picked mine up from my Home Depot for free, but had to take it in two separate trips in my truck. Working with it is very easy. I read a lot of reviews before buying and two issues that were repeated often were the dustiness of this product and the difficulty or ease of tearing it into smaller pieces (depending on who you ask). First; it really is dusty. But other than a few denim-colored boogers it didn't affect me. It wasn't a hazard to breath or anything like that. I did take to wearing a basic breathing mask (like the paper ones you wear at the doctor's office when you have a cold) after the second day just to keep from breathing it all in, but I am working in a very small, confined space that is hard to ventilate. Second; it tears really easily. About half of the batts are not perforated, and the other half are perforated in various widths. The batts with perforation don't have to be torn apart, but if you need to, it is VERY easy to do. I am working on a steel-frame house with 16" on center studs. These are designed for steel studs as they have to take up the entire 16" space (not like with 2"x4"'s where the wood itself takes up part of the 16"-- steel studs are just a couple millimeters thick so you need a batt 16" wide plus an additional 1/4" to make sure it's snug). Our steel studs are varying widths, especially around window, etc, so I have definitely used the perforations to get smaller widths. To use: lay these out flat for a few minutes and shake each one vigorously to get it to "pop" out and be the full thickness needed. I found it very easy to lay this insulation material behind all plumbing and electrical cords and then using my fingers, tear into the insulation along the cord or pipe and then just pull the insulation out and around said object so that the object was now encompassed fully within the center of the insulation, not in front of it anymore. I got lots of scraps working in odd-sized areas, but the scraps work well as loose fill too, so nothing was wasted. Overall, this denim insulation is far easier to work with than the pink stuff, and non-toxic. A winner! I will be recommending this to anyone redoing insulation or working on a new build!

Great Product!! Easy to install, Safe to handle
I bought this for a bath and baby's room renovation. I wanted an insulation that would provide a good sound barrier, as well as be easy to handle. I believe I found what I was looking for. Install was very easy. I have an older house and not all of the wall cavities were the same size. It was simple to tear along the perforations to get the correct size. In a couple situations the perforated size options did not fit my needs and I had to tear the insulation where it was not perforated. It is do-able but don't expect it to tear straight. Also, blue fibers go everywhere. I ended up wearing a respirator while installing. Make sure to order the width slightly wider than your wall cavity as it is tough to get two smaller pieces to stay in place when friction fitting. Overall great product with no fiberglass itch!!

                  Do not purchase
Very dissatisfied with this insulation product. It was very difficult to cut. After installation, then sheetrock we tested for soundproofing and it failed miserably. It's definitely too late to return since we don't want to take out the new sheetrock. This should be zero stars.

Vic, cutting R-13 is different than cutting standard batt insulation because it is essentially a textile product and is therefore different to cut. The best way to cut R-13 is with a non motorized product called the insul-knife. The insul-knife is available from Cepco Tool. You can also use a hand held grinding tool. Noise reduction is rated at 1.15 based on ASTM C-423 and ASTM E-795. A Class C means Reasonably absorbent, with a coefficient between 0.60 and 0.80. Since R-13 is measured at 1.15 it is much higher than reasonably noise absorbent. Thank you for your comments.
