Hercules Plastic Seal is a multi-purpose, extremely durable polyurethane sealant. Excellent lead substitute for caulking cast iron soil pipe joints. Works with or without oakum. Single component polyurethane sealant that cures rapidly to a firm yet flexible, waterproof and weather resistant seal. Multi-purpose repair product can also be used for caulking the perimeters of frame openings, ductwork, wood or masonry expansion joints and for glazing both inside and out. Many uses in the home, construction, automotive, RV and marine environments. Odorless sealant is crack-proof, shrink-proof and will not produce any fumes while curing. Answer This Question

A:  I have used this product a number of times, as the label says it will do, to adhere a type of PVC pipe to a hub on a cast iron soil stack, they sell a specially designed pvc fitting for this, but it is still pvc.  It has always worked fine for this, I suspect it will work fine for your project as well, just be sure to use plenty of this adhesive and give it 2-3 days to dry completely, longer if you can, if I were you I find out the name of the Mfgr and contact them directly.

Q:Sounds like this product can be used to adhere dissimilar materials, in addition to sealing around gaps. I am looking to adhere ABS to concrete - planned a marine adhesive, then caulk around gaps with this product. But maybe this product does both?

Q:Is this product an alternative to using oakum for upgrading a cast iron hub with new PVC spigot?

A:  I've done this 4 times with clean hubs, but I embedded oakum in them. The first was 14 years ago and it still looks new. Accidentally stepped on a cured toilet arm...it bent down and sprung right back! I trust this stuff more than a clamped rubber boot.

A:  I would not use it or try to use it like that. I used it to help insure a good seal on an old lead bend to brass flange. To install a pvc pipe or fitting into a cast iron hub, I’d use a rubber adapter donut made just for doing that. Clean out the CI hub and install the rubber and than the pvc. With a proper sized donut and installed right it will not leak and needs no sealer. Watch some videos on YouTube to see how it works.

The plastic seal is not only use for plastic joint. I can use it for multiple surface joint. The seal was delivered in a big box. Product seems good, worked well in my first plastic joint. But I plan to work between tile joint because of very small gap and will make it air tight. Installation is as easy like other caulking or sealant. Work extra ordinary for plastic joint. But the cost is little expensive.

This review is for The Oatey 10-3/10 oz. Plastic thread sealant. I used this sealant on plastic, it worked well. Sets quickly and get the job done. Although it claims to be a plastic sealant but it can be used on many different types of surface. I tried it on my bathroom floor tiles. Just a little bit along the gaps to fill in the space. So far it seems to hold well.

I used this product to create an air tight seal between a lead sewer pipe and brass toilet flange. It worked perfectly and, based upon the fact that the material remains pliable even after it dries, I am confident that if needed I can work on the joint again in the future. I used a screwdriver and carefully worked my way all around the pipe to create a gap between the lead pipe and the brass flange, filled that gap with Plastic Seal, then used a ball peen hammer to tap the lead tight against the flange and wiped off any excess Plastic Seal that oozed out. Much easier than soldering the pipe to the flange! I only wish that this product was carried in the Home Depot retail stores instead of just online.

                Easy and it works
Saw a video of this on youtube for sealing a toilet flange to a lead drain pipe using this plastic seal. I was surprised with how easy it was. I allowed it to cure for 24 hours. Great product.

Sealant was partially solidified in the tube. I bent my caulk gun trying to get it out. Had to cut tube open to extract needed sealant. Was very stiff to apply in this state but was able to apply it to the cast iron bell to seal in my PVC pipe.
