What type of underlayment is needed when installing this flooring on a concrete slab?

Asked by: Grumpy
I used Roberts Black Jack. It's a middle of the line product. For a little extra protection and comfort I would use Roberts Airgaurd if I had to do it over again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I installed over 1100 sg ft 7 years ago and it looks as great as it did the day it was installed.... I installed over 1100 sg ft 7 years ago and it looks as great as it did the day it was installed. In fact I am going to put it in the two bedrooms we didn't do 7 years ago. Plus it is manufactured in the USA and Not China.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These wood floors look amazing These floors look amazing and really give my home a cozy feel. The hand scrapped look and texture that each piece has really sets these floors apart from all the other floating floor material. If I had to buy flooring again, I would definitely choose this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice rich look It was easy to order and looked exactly as it did in the picture. We got the order without a problem. it was easy to lay the floor as our own home project and looks very nice.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looks good but a nightmare to install The look and finish of the product is very good. The engineering of the "click strip" is less than desirable. I am angry with myself for not listening to what others who have tried this product have stated. This was impossible to install as instructed. The connecting joints do not fit well and most boards need to be hammered in using a scrap piece. This took an enormous amount of time and got half as much done in a day as I expected. I eventually began using a staple nailer to secure the boards; the portion I first installed was floating and creaking. I have installed other types of laminated flooring with no problems. I am also a general contractor in the business for over 35 years and I have worked with many flooring installers. I know what I am doing and would never use this product again. I now have to spend an additional day to get the job done and am not to happy about it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent product This floor looks great. So far we have had the floor for 6 months with zero appreciable wear (and we have dogs). While it is true that the click lock mechanism is tight, I was very happy with the final result and believe that the tight joints will probably last much longer than a floor with loose joints. In fact, i was impressed by how fine the tolerances are for the click-lock mechanism. We did 1000 sq ft and never came across a board that wouldn't fit. The random lengths were more than adequate- plenty of long pieces and not too many short pieces. We chose to do a floating floor with a cork underlayment and this floor has minimal clickety-clack from walking (at least compared to laminate floors!). The instructions specify strict tolerances for floor flatness. To be honest, we didn't always meet the tolerances outlined in the instructions. Despite this shortcoming on our part, this product has been fairly quiet and not excessively flexible underfoot. In rooms where the tolerances were met, the floor is very quiet and firm. The finish looks great and holds up quite well. I have no significant complaints about this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good looking product with flaws perhaps generic to these products I put the flooring in my foyer, dinette, kitchen, and laundry room - 317 sq ft. That's 9.6 cartons at 33 sq ft/carton. I purchased 11 cartons - 10 plus one for possible unusable/bad/ugly boards. In my case, I found 290 boards (about 26/carton). Of these 62% were about 3.5 to 4 ft, 17% were 2.5-3.5 ft, and 21% were 1-2+ ft long. I found 17% were bowed (subjective but noticeable bowing) but they were all usable. 3% were starter boards (right or left side cut flat) mostly about 2 ft. This is described as "rustic" flooring and is wood so describing "blemishes" is very subjective. I found 7% with noticeable markings of which about 2% could be manufacturing errors (in my opinion). All were still useable by judicious use (starter boards usually). I put planks that seemed to me to not be "perfect" in a closet, pantry, hidden areas, and laundry (the floor still looked acceptable to me). I had 15 3-4 ft good boards remaining plus shorter pieces that could be starter boards - about 1/2+ of a carton. The rest is scrap from fitting the boards (I'm sure a professional would have less). I knew that water is the bane of wood floors but I still like the look of wood. If you spill water on this floor, wipe it up as soon as possible. You will probably get wrinkling of the surface after 15-30 min and sometimes less if on the edge (see pic). It is not repairable - the board has to be replaced (I tested with water damaging scrap and repairing them and did not get an acceptable fix). If you require water resistance, these type products are probably not suitable (not just this one). Small scratches can be easily fixed with a stain tube of some sort. Hickory is harder than many other woods but it will still dent if you drop things on it (think of it as being "distressed"). My impression is that the finish on these boards may not be as durable as a 55 year warranty implies (I'll let you know in 55 years!). You should get samples of floors you are considering and soak them in water if water could be a problem in your area and drop things on them. Installing the floor is not easy esp if you have to do many unusual cuts and get measurements very close but probably a lot easier than a nailed or glued floor. The bowed boards were a bit harder to install but fit well once you get the knack of putting them in. Even being off a 1/16 inch to meet an adjacent area to click/lock (as I did with a peninsula) will cause you a lot of grief but at worst requiring you to take up part of the floor and start again (a lot easier than with nails or glued floors). Thankfully, in my case, a bit of harder tapping on one side got the boards to fit. As another reviewer said, it is essential to tap each and every board in place (after it is properly fitted). They fit much better and lay flatter. I had no problems in that respect. But be sure to use the spacer blocks since all those taps could throw off your measurements. I have not noticed any noise I can attribute to the floor. In fact, some squeaks I couldn't get rid of completely in the subfloor seem quieter with the floor installed. For me the final look is good (see pic) and what I wanted and most of the boards were usable. I will also be doing the family room and use the excess boards from this project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this flooring! Ok, I am giving this flooring an excellent rating based on the absolute durability of it and the fairly easy install (once I jacked around with some of the boards to figure out my own technique of making them stay put). First of all, once installed, they are absolutely gorgeous. This finish has a rustic feel without feeling like I am walking on a wagon wheel. Also, the finish is light enough that it does not look too dark in a 1400 sq ft house with only 9 windows. I am a directions reader and I spent probably a good 3 hrs watching videos, reading directions, and attempting to install this floor. Other reviewers have been displeased with the difficulty of install. My advice would be to give yourself a few hours to mess around with several boards and figure out how they go together. I was not able to make any boards lay totally flat with just slipping the tongue into the groove. I had to use a tapping block even while the board was still at a little bit of an angle to get it to slide all the way in. After I hit the distal end of the board, it would usually slide into place. I had my wrecking ball type friend come over and install several boards using only a rubber mallet. To my dismay and delight, she beat the tongue in using a sweeping motion from the outer side of the board into the interior portion while you are putting the board in. I say this because, she too less time installing each board than I did by being more delicate, and this flooring is crazy durable because there were absolutely no marks, marring, cracking, or breaking of ANY pieces by this install. I had several extra boards and told her to go to town bashing on them, and no marks showed up on any piece. I am very impressed with the durability and hardness of this product. I am probably going to install it in the rest of the house. I give this product 5 stars because it was installable by a first time floor installer and the durability seems paramount based on the abuse the flooring has already taken. Give yourself some extra time to figure out the jointing methods of this floor (it is more difficult to click together than any video I watched), but once put together, it is totally solid.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lots of warped boards - difficult to install Floor was difficult to fit - several times boards would not fit or lay flat - we would have to take out a section and find the board causing the problem - we have boards we just could not use from the boxes - seems to be a problem with the longer pieces. Some boxes had all short pieces in them which just does not look as nice on the floor - colors do vary in some boxes so mix at least 3-4 boxes at a time. Finished floor looks nice but we notice some noise when walking on it at times. Decided do do about half of what we planned because of the difficulties and large number of small pieces.
