Evaporative Coolers for Arid Climates
What Type of Evaporative Cooler is Best for the Climate I Live In?
  • Perfect for outdoor use or well ventilated rooms
  • Not designed for use as an indoor air conditioner
  • Compact design with built in folding handle
The Hessaire 1,300 CFM Evaporative Cooler is compact in size, pleasing in aesthetics and the performance exceeds coolers of a much larger size. This performance is achieved through expanding air-intake areas to the hi-density XeL50 rigid media. The hi-density XeL50 media provides 80% more evaporation surface compared to regular density media. This means higher evaporation efficiency and cooler temperatures. Patented axial prop is energy efficient and throws cool air farther. Molded with ABS resin, creating a strong, yet lightweight design. This model has a handle to carry the unit. 1-year warranty.
  • High-density XeL50 media provides 80% more evaporation surface compared to normal density media
  • Pleasing aesthetics and compact size allow this model to outperform larger coolers
  • Only costs $0.01 per hour to operate due to extreme power efficiency
  • Patented axial propeller is energy efficient and throws cool air farther
  • Water tank holds 4.8 gal., for a 3-4 hour run time
  • 3-sided pad intake area allows for maximum cooling
  • Most CFM delivered per $ of any evaporative cooler
  • Rugged poly propylene housing with UV protection
  • ABS resin makes for a strong, lightweight design
  • 1-year warranty

1,300 CFM 2-Speed Portable Evaporative Cooler (Swamp Cooler) for 500 sq. ft. is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 381.

I have a whole house evap cooler too, But especially in afternoons the sunny side of house can get quite warm. Fill this unit with water, plug it in and roll it into the room and it will quietly drop the temp nicely assisting the main cooler. The design of the fan throws air a great distance. I find on a hot day this will use about a gallon of water an hour so best to keep an eye on it. It hold 4.7 gallons and running it dry would hurt the pump

Although I could not see it, the pump sounded like a regular swamp cooler pump. Very Loud. The reservoir held almost 5 gallons, but the pump needed 1 1/2 gallons before it stopped making a horrible surge and grab sound at the water. The fan sounded like a lawn mower, high or low. In short, it would have been impossible to sleep with one anywhere near the hot bedroom it was intended to help cool. After adding the 1 1/2 gallons to make the surge sound stop, I added another gallon. It ran around an hour before that gallon was gone. This meant that if full of water, I could only count on 4-5 hours of operation before it went nuts with the surge sound. Complete failure. A submergible pump would fix the pump sound and the surge as they are dead quiet and need only an inch or two of water to run. A different motor on the fan is needed to reduce that loud sound. (It was not the sound of the rushing air, but the motor) Do not buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with the Hessaire 1300 CFM Cooler. This... Very pleased with the Hessaire 1300 CFM Cooler. This thing puts out some serious AIR, even on the low setting. I like the pull out door for easy filling (can even fit ice cubes in it) and the see through water level window. I would say a full tank last about 4 hours on the low setting and it does make a difference in cooling the air. We used it on our front porch to keep cool and also used the hose hook up for it to keep water flowing into it and that worked great! That keeps the water level about half full all the time. We even have the cooler set on a on off timer with the hose attached and no water overflow! We like it and our dog especially likes it! Only negative I have to report is the manual diagram for the controls is backwards from the actual controls on the unit. I had the unit on pump for a while while I thought it was in the fan position. So, get your glasses out and look at those controls carefully.

Super easy to assemble, and I just turned it on and it cooled down my room! It did smell a little on the first day, but it went away after 30 mins. For those who say that it doesn't work/its ineffective: 1. It will NOT work if you live in a humid climate. I live in Colorado, with cool nights but hot, dry days. It lowers the temperature by 10 degrees in my house. 2. It will NOT be as effective if you close all your windows/doors in one room. This is not an air conditioning unit. An evaporation cooler needs ventilation, so open those windows and point the cooler in that direction for a cross flow to get it to be effective 3. It will NOT work as well if you use warm water. Use cold tap water! You can even add few ice cubes for a cool blast, but I found that the effect was very temporary. 4. It will NOT work instantly. Though this unit technically blows out cooler air, it does not blow out cold air like you might be accustomed to with an air conditioning unit. Give it about 15 minutes and you'll feel the temperature go down. 5. It will not work as well in a large room. At a certain point, the CFM will not be able to keep up with the SF of your room size. This is just fact, and if you need something for a large area, get a bigger unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised After reading reviews, I decided on this unit, although I’ve always chosen Honeywell in the past. Honeywell’s 525 cfm for a 300 sq ft room couldn’t make a difference in my 260 sq ft room on hot days, so it needed to be replaced. This thing is very cheap plastic, no fancy hardware or electronics, to be sure. Weighs hardly anything, small and easy to maneuver, but probably wouldn’t withstand any abuse of any kind. It does well in the 260 sq ft room, not sure how it would perform in 500 sq ft, like it says. But I’m very impressed so far with its performance in here. Three complaints: The door to add water is very cheap, very hard to open. Need to use a screw driver or butter knife almost every time. Also, have to add water every 3-4 hours, so it can’t run with the pump on while sleeping. No auto shut off, no timer, or sleep mode. (Like I said, nothing fancy.) Lastly, we were baffled the first day as to why the water level wasn’t going down and disappointed with the cool output UNTIL we discover that the dial in the manual is NOT the same as the actual dial. The fan/pump buttons and fan only buttons are reversed! We were running it solely on fan by looking at the manual. Overall, this is probably the best bang for your buck you can find in portable swamp cooling.

The outside temps here regularly exceed 100 degrees, and the garage will get hotter than that in the afternoon, so the garage becomes stifling and hard to work in without the cooler. I placed the unit on top of a bench in front of an open window, and spent about 10 minutes rigging a simple block/seal on part of the window, so the fan grabs more of the outside, dry air, without the air blowing past the unit. I have only had this about a month, and have used it about 10 times, so I can't speak to the lomg-term reliability. I fill it manually with a hose or gallon jugs, and turn it on the low power setting about an hour before working in the garage. It cools well enough that I can work in the garage reasonably comfortably... don't expect it to get COLD, but it works as it should. As with any evaporative cooler, you need to open windows or roll up your garage door a few inches on the opposite side from the unit, so the moist/cool air can travel through the room, and moisture can exit. Otherwise it will just make your room steamy.

(not hot). Within 20 minutes the temperature was down to 71F after I turned the cooler on at high and medium speed. The cooler is light weight. This appliance is a real simple construction made out of housing, a water pump, a fan, a water reservoir and a medium where the water flows through and back into the reservoir.

Effectiveness will vary with your humidity level, but in the Desert it is working great. One Caveat is the float for the built-in water supply; it's set so that the water fills to the middle of the tank (and not the top), which means that you will get the sound of dripping water when using the supply hose. I push the float down with a rod so that the tank fills up all the way - no drip when the tank is full. I would rate it one star lower for this, but most portable evap coolers don't even come with a water supply attachment, so it wouldn't be justified. The float is specially designed and doesn't look like it can be adjusted. I'm guessing this was an engineering decision to make sure that there's no chance of tank overflow when using the garden-hose connector. For the money it's a good value. If it's really drawing only 0.7 amps, then it's by far the cheapest way to cool a small room.
