A: I'm using fine grade steel wool to smooth out the rough wood area on the floor. Then, I'll lightly wash it clean and apply Old English dark lemon oil to the cleaned wood. Seems brass would respond well to fine grade steel wool, but I'd definitely check with Google search pages first. Ask the same question and in the same way you asked me.Hope this helps.

A: The finer you go, the more "brushed" the look will be. The thicker may appear too scratched; although, will be much quicker if you aren't concerned about the scratching.

A: Hi there, This should work. Depending on the type of metal & how thick the substance you are trying to remove is, the #00 might be less harsh on your surface.

A: I assume the brass is coated -- probably clear lacquer. I would use steel wool as a last resort. If you do, probably start with 0000 on a place where slight scratches won't show. If 0000 won't remove the mortar, move up to 000, etc. However, before using steel wool, try to gently remove the mortar using a plastic scraper. Old credit cards, plastic gift cards, etc. seem to work well. Also, you can buy nylon automotive upholstery installer pry tools. Used properly, those tools work amazingly well. Used gently they will not scratch on the softest metals (I use them on soft aluminum). Most auto supply stores sell them. Finally, mortar is usually alkaline which can pit brass. If so, buff out the pits with steel wool, polish jewelry rouge & or rubbing compound & reseal. Best of luck!
