What holds the door closed? Magnet or ??

Asked by MPVet July 30, 2020

Answers

There is no magnet latch or any other type of latch keeping the door closed. Instead, it has a special hinge that gently closes the door and keeps it closed. The door will stay open while accessing the cabinet but when closed to about 45 degrees it will continue to slowly & gently close all the way. Two rubber cushion pads soften the action so it does not make any noise.

can it be painted

Asked by steve July 17, 2020

Answer

Yes, it can be painted. But because it comes spray painted from the factory, if I was painting, I would also use spray paint in order to keep the texture nice and not see paint brush strokes.

What is the size of the opening in the wall?

Look at the rough dimensions of the cabinet. Then frame with a little play in the wall so it's not tight and allows for wood to swell/contract with heat/cold.

We installed this July 2019 during a bathroom remodel. We were happy with it when first installed. It is not even a full year later and it has water damage. The inside shelf has swelled and split. The outside also has stains. This is just from wet hands touching it and reaching in to get things off the shelves; nothing spilled. Being that it is meant for a wet environment it’s expected to be more water resistant. Also despite following cleaning instructions the fog-free mirror has scratches (and is not very good at being fog free)

This medicine cabinet and anti fog mirror is beautiful. We were a little concern about mounting this to the wall with just screws through particle board. So to fix this we added a board to help support.

The product itself is okay. It's a large cabinet with tons of inside space that isn't misused in the design. I did not like having to provide my own screws when installing. It's probably my fault for not thinking that this item would not come with the necessary hardware to hang it properly but I did not and it required me to make a trip just for screws. The construction looks to be pretty stable. I chose to surface mount mine because it was larger than the previous one and I didn't want to have to go through the effort of doing more demo than I wanted. All in all, it looks nice. I can't speak to the fog protection since it didn't go in my bathroom but everything else was fine. I would not recommend this to others because I do feel that the price tag is higher than it should be. Otherwise, it is a medicine cabinet.

great mirror
At first we thought we would have to surface mount this medicine cabinet due pipes in the wall but our contractor was able to partially recess it and put an extra piece of trim around it which I think really adds to it. It’s handy and has two shelves.

We returned it because it was too big for our small bathroom. We purchased the smaller medicine cabinet that looks similar for $29. This picture shows it with a knob to open and close the cabinet door. It comes with no hardware. There was a very small damage to the door frame requires a little touch up paint. It is in the second bathroom and for the price it is a good looking cabinet. We purchased a new vanity with sink, toilet, and storage cabinet along with the surface mount medicine cabinet and painted for a "new" bathroom look.

(What's this)
This is a "big" medicine cabinet that is plain and white but very attractive and functional. I replaced a smaller on in the bathroom my two sons share and they really like the amount of storage space in this one as well as the large mirror on the door. Installation was easy other than having to cut into a wall stud that was necessary because the recessed portion of this cabinet is 19" wide and will not go between studs. Two shelves lay on brackets that easily insert into the pre-drilled holes on the side and offer different height options. This is a very nice and solid medicine cabinet.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
This particular cabinet is designed to be either surface mounted or recessed flush into the wall. If the cabinet you are replacing is recessed in the wall and its wall opening is the same or larger than this one, then just rip out the old and install this one doing any necessary wall patching as needed. However, if the old cabinet is smaller and you want to recess this one flush in the wall then be prepared for some construction work. Normal spacing between wall studs (16" on center) is just slightly more than 15". To install this cabinet will probably require cutting out sections of the vertical wall stud and installing cripples (horizontal braces) to accommodate the new dimensions. The best time to do this of course is when the sheetrock and/or tile has been removed for remodeling. If the old cabinet is smaller than the new one and you would be happy to just surface mount then just locate some existing studs, place the new cabinet covering the wall opening and secure with screws... you're good to go. There is a third way not normally mentioned... my way. This new cabinet is considerably larger than the one I was replacing but I had no desire to rework the studs and I didn't really want to just surface mount the new one either. So what I did was simply trim away just the sheetrock enough to accommodate the new cabinet and partially recess the new cabinet for a slightly better finished look. Cleaning up the sheetrock debris that resulted was the only time consuming part of the project.
