The Home Decorators Collection Atticus Smoke Brown secretary desk is a good value for the price. Assembly takes time and patience but the size is perfect for my small in-home office. Now I can donate the huge L-shaped desk that was taking up too much space in the room. It has the flip-top feature that hides paperwork and my laptop when not in use. The Smoke Brown color is rich and it looks more expensive than it is. The desk is heavy and solid with a real-wood appearance even though there is particle board inside the wood exterior layer. I would have given it five stars if it was easier to assemble but, at its price point, this desk is a great choice.

Home Decorators Collection Atticus Smoke Brown Wood Secretary Desk with Flip Top 36-inch-wide, 54-inch-high and 22 to 33 inches deep, top up and down. It comes in two boxes of parts – two end frames, thirteen other parts and a hardware package. All parts and hardware items are clearly marked with stickers. The assembly instructions are quite clear except for the top control braces. The desk is constructed of “manufactured wood” which is heavier than natural wood so this desk is heavy. Manufactured wood is very stable and the parts, which are assembled using dowels and hidden fasteners, fit together as if made of machined metal. A tip restraint bracket is provided but the desk is quite stable without it. The wood grain and color of the desk is uniform.

This desk was delivered in 2 heavy flat pack boxes. The material is a manufactured wood product. I found that a threaded insert on one of the side legs had bulged out the wood at that spot and it was not flat. The tolerances for fit are loose enough that this did not cause an assembly problem. Assembly took over an hour to find and fit the parts. The instruction sheet is difficult to read. The illustrations are small and not very detailed and the text part of the instructions do not describe the steps well. Step 5 in particular, which describes assembly of the side legs with the core shelves, is not very clear and easy to miss that there are 2 support bars that must be inserted instead of just one. The 4 hex key bolts used to attach the side frames are easily stripped by the hex wrench so be careful. There are no extra hardware pieces included in case one is lost or damaged. Plan on using a cordless drill / driver for the phillips screws. You will also need a short handle screw driver to turn 4 bolt connectors so make sure you have one available. During assembly there are times when boards are not supported well so be careful during all steps not to twist anything. Once assembled, the unit is relatively stable but do not attempt to move it by dragging the legs on the floor. The fold out writing surface is more stable than I expected. I did not expect to see that the desk includes hardware to attach it to the wall. The wall attachment apparently is a safety measure against it tipping forward and not something I would want to see as a requirement in furniture. In the end, I was not very impressed with the overall look. It certainly is functional as a secretary desk but not very interesting to look at as it is basically a trapezoid box on thin legs.

misses the mark
My husband spent a long time putting this together and we were annoyed when all was said and done the writing table portion of the desk does not lay completely flat. It hyper-extends downwards and no amount of readjusting the screws will fix it. There is a wooden stick that it supposed to help the desk lay flat but even this stick is not level. Only if you are able to perform modifications that allow a flat writing surface would I recommend purchasing it because it does check all the boxes. The open bottom is open to allow room for the legs and when the middle shelf is removed I'm able to place a 24" monitor at a comfortable eye level.

looks great when complete...
My fiance loves the desk and has been using it all day, unfortunately there were some problems during construction that bear mentioning.
There is an upright piece (Labeled "B") which came milled improperly. The upright cam screw did not line up with the pre-drilled hole and made it unusable. At the same time the dowel rod holes were lined up to the point that if you installed them (All upright holes on this panel were drilled with an improper offset), the side panel could not be connected because the top piece was being flexed too hard (about at least 3/4" off where they should have been drilled in the center support for that part of the frame). Without installing the dowel rods I was able to make the piece fit but it will forever be missing the locking cam screw since it would never be able to connect to the locking post. Great looking desk but poor instructions (which side is which as far as orientation for symmetrical pieces) and bad mill-work/ Quality control.
Panel B is asymmetrical and is extremely difficult to install incorrectly or in reverse orientation. This is not my first rodeo. I knew I was in for a ride when there was a cam recess with no drilled through hole connected. It still works but, I am very disappointed considering the price.
