What's the max length of this shelf? I am looking for 60", or 72" long such shelves with Black color for my family room wall. Can I order on-line?
Asked by: Charles
There are three standard sizes slightly shorter than the labelled sizes - 42", 36" and 24". They cannot easily be cut as they are hollow but you can combine them and line them up. 60" = 36" + 24". 72" = 3 x 24". I would suggest edging them using a 2" trim like Home Depot Pine DM 2054 Detail possibly after staining. It comes in 8' lengths and can be linked,

I had hoped this was made of wood instead of mdf(medium density fiberboard). The textured plastic finish looks good and would fake out most at a few feet distance. The kit comes with a bag of assorted fasteners, but I did not use them. I wanted to attach the hanging bracket to two studs above my washer/dryer and the studs were a bit off at 17 in centers, so I drilled another 1/4 in hole in the bracket, marked level and drilled 1/8 in guide holes for 3 in deck screws into the studs. I also used a Wall-a-bot with my phone to see the electric wires and water pipes inside the wall, it worked. The shelf looks good and I put three big jugs of liquid detergent and other laundry supplies on it and it's doing good with about 60 lb wt on it.

Shipped with 6 plastic anchors and 6 wall mount screws. The back plate has 7 holes, I wonder which hole the designer had in mind to save supplying the other plug and screw? 2. The wall mounting screws are rather long but have a 1/2" shank. Genius designer is expecting to mount the 1/8" back plate to a plastic wall plug with a screw that has a 1/2" shank. Probably got an arts degree and being paid as an engineer. All would be fine if there was a wall stud for each of the 7 holes but then you would need to make sure your wall studs lined-up with the position of the holes and the position you need the shelf. I used the plastic wall plugs, after finding a suitable screw without a shank, and got it mounted. Where is the warning that this mounting style would not allow the shelf to hold 5lbs. Terrible design and parts supply. Don't use this unless you are prepared to mount a 2X4 or similar to the wall studs first, this is what I have to do to overcome the holes left in the wall.

This Floating Grey Oak Decorative 10” X 42” Shelf ledge is a visual wonder with no obvious support brackets. A first look you can see that the shelf is two inches in thickness. It uses an ingenious mounting technique. This floating shelf uses a strong steel back plate which mounts securely to the wall. The back plate has holes pre-drilled two of witch are 16’’ apart. Perfect for mounting to a wall using the wood studs that are usually 16” on center. The back plate comes with additional plastic dry wall anchors for use in a hollow wall if necessary. Once the back plate is mounted the next step is to slide the shelf over the two steel pipes that extend 6 ½ inches from the back plate. The last step is to secure the shelf in place with two screws from the bottom of the shelf into the steel pipes that extend from the back plate.

It was easy to install. The quality is good and the finish looks very nice. Perfect for adding additional shelf space in a small office. I have used this for that reason and it makes a huge difference when you have a small desk and need more space for items such as paper clips, stapler, tape etc , things that you want to keep off the desk and have easy access to. The product is fine and I cant think of anything wrong with it. It works as intended.

Well it's not the best manufactured shelf I've installed and it's not the worst. I'd call this Chicago floating grey oak shelf the middle of the road. The finish or veneer or paper covering the MFB composite does not mimic wood at all and simply sliding stuff around on the shelf scuffs it up fairly easily. The shelf itself is strong and I think it would handle as much weight as the hanger would hold so a bonus there. This unit has a special hidden hanger to give the shelve a floating look. It's very simple to install and level plus it comes with great wall anchors if your not going into wood or studs to hold it up. The shelf is held to this hidden bracket by two set screws which I wish they had just used a nice tight plastic insert in the holes as a much easier and better way to keep this to the wall and snug yet allowing it to come down without having to deal with this set screw set up that just didn't sit well with me as I see it stripping and me using a drill bit and a permanent screw. The hole idea of this hanger is really a great idea that needs some fine tweaking and then even these brackets should be sold so other shelves can be adapted to these. I don't see any bow at all on this shelf after hanging a month with some very heavy tool sets sitting on top. Even though I haven't tried it should easily accept paint if you decide to go a different direction. All in all a solid, stable shelf with the floating look with some minor problems that need to be ironed out. All that is needed for install is a torpedo level, pencil, tape measure, drill, drill bits and driver bits. You may have to replace screws or wall anchors depending on certain applications.

I have in recent months purchased a very substantial quantity of Floating Grey Oak shelves - almost 100. These have been mainly the 42" but also the 24" and 36". I use them as shelves and wall unit sides. I make them up into most attractive wall units which I co-ordinate with existing furniture. I stain 2" Pine DM 2054 Detail obtained from HD to enhance the leading edge finish. I am attaching a picture of multiple projects finished and in process. I can send more to give you an even better idea of the huge potential of these shelves. There are a number of challenges with them, particularly if you want to line them up along a wall as I have done. It is not just a question of accurate measurement. These are the quality challenges, all of which I have been able to overcome with practice and patience:: The surface finish is thin paper which scuffs easily. It is not easy to but them up to each other in line - adding the trim largely solves this problem by forcing them into line.. The construction relies on hardboard and compressed board which will not easily take a screw. Counter sunk screws can quickly go right through the hardboard. The metal wall attachment parts are not consistent in quality and fit and are often slightly bent in all planes and not dead straight. The bronze finish screws for the 42 and 36" are fine. The metal screws for the 24" are dreadful and frankly unusable. The heads sometimes snap off the shorter screws with minimal tightening against the hardboard. I will not use the longer screws supplied with the 24" as the Phillips grooves and heads are too small/shallow and quickly graunch/ become unusable. I rather suspect that many customers are put off after an initial purchase but this is a super product with enormous potential for the handyman. I have no hesitation in recommending it but would like to see the quality issues addressed regarding the metal components, including the dreadful steel screw sets to the 24".

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This review is based on the 42-inch version of the shelf. The shelf is actually 41-1/2-inches (105 cm) long which could be important depending on your application. The actual width is 10-1/4-inches (26 cm). The top and bottom of the shelves are lithographed in a realistic gray oak pattern on 1/8-inch thick tempered hardboard; the edges are plastic laminate in a matching finish. Finish is believable looking from a short distance. The mounting back plate is 23-1/2-inches long. The back plate has two slotted holes that are nominally 16-inches on-center, two that are nominally 22-inches apart, two that are 21-inches apart, and one in the center. The installation drawing indicates that the three holes at each end should be used—a total of six locations. The hardware provided included five, winged, plastic drywall anchors (should have been 6 according to the parts list), six long (2-1/4”) screws and two short screws (1-1/4”). The screws had full-length threads and the two shorter screws are the “set screws” to secure the shelf to the back plate. I prefer to use “screw-in” style plastic drywall anchors so the missing DW anchor was not a problem. I also wanted to get one of the screws into a stud but none of the holes lined up with a stud so I drilled another hole in the back plate. The installation was solid and seems like it could hold more than 20 lbs. (It appears that the manufacturer rates the shelves at 20 lbs. whether they are 20 inches long or 48-inches long.)
