We embarked on a project to remodel my 13-year old son's 114 sq. ft. bedroom with fresh paint and new floors. He decided he wanted to go with hardwood floors instead of the carpet he currently had. We made a trip to HD to pick paint check and out the variety of hardwood floor options. We were impressed with the variety of options and the manner in which HD had them on display. We ended up taking several free samples home, but ultimately decided on this product as it contrasted enough with the existing dark walnut/cherry laminate in the adjacent hallway while the subtle browns helped to blend it in. After an exhaustive effort of scraping the floors from the residual carpet glue and ensuring a clean flat surface, I laid down the underlayment. This was a fairly frustrating experience because the $65 roll I bought said it would cover 100 sq ft. Well, the room was 114 sq ft, so I had to buy 200 sq ft at $130 to cover it. In the end, I like the underlayment quality as this is an upstairs bedroom and the sound dampening properties are excellent compared to that of our existing laminate in the hallway where I'm not even sure they used any underlayment. Before embarking on the floor installation, I planned out the floor layout using a spreadsheet I designed which helped me plan my cuts with minimal waste and to also properly stagger the seams randomly. Just like most everything in life, the majority of the time spent on installing the floor was in the prep work. Likewise, the quality of prep you do makes the actual installation that much easier. I pretty much installed the floor by myself with an occasional hand from my son so that he could get the experience. It took me a while (3 days) to install because I'm OCD, but the result was phenomenal and am totally impressed with the appearance, quality, and value of this laminate product. Thank you Home Depot for a great product! Here are some tips: 1) Layout all of the planks into pattern piles and mix-n-match them so there is equal distribution throughout the room. I didn't do this in the beginning and halfway through noticed blotches of grays, browns, etc. So, I removed the planks, organize them by pattern and re-did the layout for a beautiful and seemingly random layout. 2) Plan your cuts ahead. I'm a bit of a nerd, so I ended up creating a layout spreadsheet that ensured I met the requirements of no aligned seams, no plank less than 12", and no adjacent seams within 6" of each other. Had I not done this, I fear I would have gone way over the 10% waste I bought. I ended up with 2 spare planks. 3) Make clean cuts. Reading the wisdom from various online sites, it appeared you should use a 80+ tooth saw blade. So, I found a 200 tooth 10" saw blade at HD that is designed to cut plastics, plywood, etc. No good! It was slow, creating tons of dust and was sparking! I switched to my normal miter saw blade, which is 35 teeth and worked much better. However, it did rip the vinyl top of some corners a couple of times. So, I'd stick with an 60-80 tooth saw blade. 4) Check for equidistant walls. I made the mistake of assuming the walls were perfectly straight and as a result I have one place where there is about a 1/16" of the floor edge exposed beyond the baseboard. It turns out that wall bows in 1/8" making the 3/8" expansion joint 1/2" instead. Next time I will take a room width measurement from the corners and the middle to check straightness. 5) Pro tip on door thresholds. I got to the very last plank at the doorway into the room and really struggled to get this plank maneuvered at a 30-45 degree angle where it could click in. I found a technique from a pro in Canada that worked. On the male end of the plank of that final board, I used a chisel (suggested to use a small hand planer) to remove the little ridge and just leave the main part that inserts. Then, apply a bit of traditional wood glue and voila, the board slipped right in.
