Is this difficult to install?

This would be our first time installing any flooring by ourselves. And we are wanting to do our whole main level in this flooring in a house we are in the process of buying. We were going to have someone install it, but talking to the flooring guy at our home depot, it sounds like it will take about 6 weeks before they can finish the project. So I am wondering if first time DIYers could do this in a day or two? (About 800 sq feet)
Asked by: NewtoDIY
I would rate this as moderately difficult to install . I have installed real wood flooring , another brand of laminate flooring so I had a decent amount of experience going in to it. If you are not “handy”, forget it. Once you get past the first 3 or 4 rows it gets easier as you can kneel in the finished floor while “snapping “ the next row in. Read the instructions, read them again . It works and looks great. If you are installing in a room with moulding already installed you will need a lot of trim to hide the gaps. I would strongly recommend removing door casing first if possible . Once you get past the first 3 or 4 rows I would rate it easy to install but if you don’t get those first rows done right you will be tearing your hair out .

Does this product have to air out before installation?
Asked by: Paul49
The instructions stated to let the flooring sit in the room that it is to be installed in for 48 hours, in the box . It also recommended a temperature of 65-70 to acclimate it .

I like the Perry Hickory, but not sure about how it will look in an entire living room. Has anyone felt the Perry Hickory is actually too red or too vibrant once installed, so it dominates the room too much or is too eye-catching? Thanks!
Asked by: Swash
I am very happy with this product. I did my entire living room and to me it looks beautiful. I also combine two colors.

High Gloss Perry Hickory 8 mm Thick x 5 in. Wide x 47-3/4 in. Length Laminate Flooring (13.26 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 787.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very soft laminate, manufacturer doesn't stand behind product We were very excited to get our High Gloss Pacific Cherry by Hampton Bay/Home Legends flooring. The excitement soon turned to disappointment in the flooring. We purchased laminate because of the supposedly durability. I would classify Hampton Bay/Home Legends flooring as very soft. After only three months we have 38 little dings throughout the house. Home legends sent one of "their" inspectors out to inspect the flooring. Claim came back denied. Wished I would have read some previous reviews that warned that Home Legends will not stand behind their product. We purchased a cheaper laminate flooring from Home Depot about 5 years ago for the downstairs den and it still looks great, no dings or anything. The cheaper laminate is far superior to the more expensive Home Legends that we purchased. I hope this review helps someone else from making the same mistake that we made. We are saving up to replace this 3 1/2 month old flooring but we will be steering clear of Hampton Bay/Home Legends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good product and price I did a lot of tests on flooring before i bought this product. First was the scratch test by running a screw driver back and forth over the more than two dozen samples i had accumulated from various stores, this also included some wood samples. Result was i could not see anything easily on the Sante Fe Oak where other i did. Next i dropped a medium sized philips screw driver point first from shoulder high and only got a vary small hard to see nick and some of the other samples it would almost stick in and left a large deep chip. Last was the dropped cigarette test and again the Sante Fe Oak had no easily easily visual marks where others did. We did the dining room last year and loved it so we just did the great room. Very easy to install with the correct tools and you also need a little patience to do a good job. It is very easy to clean with just a damp mop using water. I highly recommend this product to anyone especially if you have kids and or pets.

It looks nothing like the planks of laminate hardwood depicted on the page for Alexander Oak. It is much darker and has none of the wonderful grain and knot characteristics that were depicted. It is very blah and very monotone. I of course understand that colors can vary but they show room pics and close up pics and it looks nothing like it. I don't have time or energy to send it back and go flooring shopping again as I am disabled and don't live near any flooring stores. This is for my rental that I have right next door and sometimes the rental when it is empty is used for caregivers or family members. Not happy with my purchase or the depiction of it. It has no character like that depicted and is completely a different color. Flooring installer comes in a few hours and will see what he says.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Water Testing I'm concerned about moisture and possible water issues in laminate, but love the look. I have a few months to make a decision but wanted to share a test I have been doing with the sample piece of this Jatoba laminate. For a month now I have used the sample piece as a drink coaster. No signs of any moisture are evident, despite seeing condensation dripping down the core and tongue and groove connectors.. I'm not saying laminate isn't susceptible to water and you shouldn't have reservations about it, you should be concerned. However, in my test I see nothing different about this sample from when I brought it home. With so many concerns over water and laminate it's a bit more resistant than I expected given that water is its main downfall. Next test, what happens when I stick it in the dishwasher? How many times till I see water seeping into the core. Science and homeowners need to know, lol.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Average quality with very nice finish Flooring is durable and looks very nice. As another reviewer noted, tapping more than exactly the necessary amount when installing causes raised edges on the short end of the grooved plank, but that is minor issue that can be avoided if you take your time. About a month after installing, the floor started making crackling sounds when walked on, but only after it has not been walked on for a few hours; it is worse when the sun has been hitting the floor. Anyone else have this crackling issue, and does it go away? I left a 1/4" gap around the perimeter as instructed (up to 1/2" in some areas due to walls not being straight). The flooring was in the house for 3 days before installation was started. It is installed over flat particle board on top of plywood. I gave the quality rating 3 stars because my main reason for posting this review is to describe the crackling sounds. Other than that it is a very nice floor. If the sounds subside or can be fixed, I would give it 4-5 stars and a 5 star overall rating. Anyone with experience or advice please comment or post a review.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from love the new floor I bought this floor after searching for a long time to find the right wood look for my foyer, hallway, and office. This floor really fits the bill. Friends that have come over are impressed with how it looks like the real hardwood boards. Installing was, at times, difficult, and took a while. It took about 9 hours to do the office, with a closet about 142 square feet. Now that it is complete, it is fantastic. Boards shipped had some damage, scratches, and bubbles. We ordered a second time to get extra to finish the job. Return was simple at HD store for items we didn't need. Thresholds were hard and we found the t-style threshold worked best into rooms with laminate, vinyl and carpet. We didn't use any reducer styles, and did tack down the ones that meet frieze. A little putty covered the tack holes once we counter-sunk them. Overall, this product gives warmth and polish to the rooms and hope it stands the test of time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Avoid it! We've had this down a few years now, and I agree with all previous reviewers about its beauty. It looks more like real wood than anything else we looked at, but unfortunately its beauty is fleeting. First off, the manufacturer states that it virtually maintenance free, resists dust, dirt and footprints. Well, that's a joke, don't believe it. It shows every footprint and dry mopping just won't do it. I could live with that to have a floor this beautiful, even if I do have to clean it every day. What is unacceptable is the finish began peeling in sections within the first few months leaving areas that are dulled that no amount of buffing will make shine again. Which brings me to the second thing. The 50 year warranty is a joke. We filed a claim, an inspector came out and determined it was not peeling, but residue built up because I was cleaning it too often inspite of the fact that I dry mopped once a day and used a laminate cleaner once a week. Claim rejected. It is not residue. I've tried all kinds of things to remove the so called 'residue' but nothing works. That's because it's not residue, the finish is peeling like a sunburn. Avoid it!
