Questions & Answers

I have had this installed but I am getting too much warm water out of my cold faucets. How do I adjust so cold comes out the cold faucets?

Asked by: Frustrated
If the pump stopped pumping once hot water reached the sink this wouldn't be a problem. These systems utilize a Normally Open thermostatic valve that closes only after 94F water contacts the valve. Once closed the valve won't open until heat loss occurs in the hot water pipe dropping the temperature below the valves specified temperature. This results in 93F water entering your cold water line at the same rate at which heat is being lost through convection in your hot water lines. There is a video on youtube showing that's normal to wait as much as 80 seconds for cold water at taps which have these valves installed.

DO I REALLY NEED THE PUMP OR WILL JUST THE SENSOR VALVE DO THE TRICK

lF I UNDERSTAND THE PUMP ONLY INCREASES THE PRESSURE.
Asked by: bklyndog
I think the fellow who indicated "convection" has a point. In an instance where the hot water is required, say a kitchen sink, is higher in elevation than the hot water heater and they are directly connected by the addition of a dedicated line back to the water heater, then water should flow through the circuit due to thermal convection. Cold water is more dense than hot water and would like to flow downwards while at the same time the hot water would tend to rise. The resulting differential in pressure is very low and dependent on the height difference between the two points and the pressure drop through the pipe. Thus the efficiency of this would be increased by a greater height difference and larger supply and return lines.

can this pump be used with tankless hot water heaters?

Asked by: GeorgeM1
Not needed for tankless water heaters. You will get hot water just as fast with a tankless water heater if not faster.

We have a ranch style home with the hot water heater on one end of the house and bathrooms on the other end of home. We've always had to run the hot water in the master bath a while to get hot water to take a shower. With this product, Watt's Hot Water Recirculating System, we have instant hot water! I'm sure we are not the only ones with this problem. This has made such a difference in our home. It attaches to the hot water heater. There is a device that attaches under the bathroom sink as well. If you hate not having instant hot water check this out at Home Depot. It cost $199 but I guess I'm spoiled it is well worth it! Plus we are not wasting water. Love it!

The base connection almost fooled my plumber. But then my plumber is not the brightest Bob. It’s one of those situations where you either tighten it first while you have full clearance with a large wrench but must estimate the proper direction it’ll face, or tighten it last with his favorite mini Channel-Locks. He did the latter. Leaked at first, but fixed / retightened okay. Now working beautifully. The undersink parts I did myself no problem. I’ve further have it plugged into a smart outlet. So now I turn it on remotely from bedside just 15 minutes before needed — because my schedule is not regular. Ready for winter.

This Hot Water Recirculating System is the very best thing I could have bought, it has a times with many different settings so we have it to turn on during family shower times. We used to have to run the hot water at least 2-3 minutes to get hot water to the upstairs but now its there the second we turn on the faucet. Its wonderful

It installs easily but still takes 4 minutes to get hot water to the kitchen sink. After calling the manufacturer it was suggested I remove the heat trap on my gas hot water heater. Did that, no change. The next suggestion was to install another recirculation valve under the sink in parallel to double the recirculation flow. That's another $60+. I guess I don't have a choice other than keep throwing money at this thing. I expected to have hot water at my kitchen sink in less than a minute. My sink and hot water heater are about 75' apart.

It is truly wonderful to be able to wash your hands in warm/hot water without having to wait. This pump really does the job. For easier install get slip on connector mentioned below, easy install with no waiting for cure time. "SharkBite 3/4 in. Push-to-Connect x 3/4 in. FIP x 15 in. Braided Stainless Steel Water Heater Connector" I had to add an additional connection under the sink on the other side of the house. One thing to be aware of is that the connection under the sink will emit a fairly quiet water flowing noise. The first time I heard it, I thought a toilet was running.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought this along with a new Rheem water heater thinking mainly about preventing pipe freezing ... I bought this along with a new Rheem water heater thinking mainly about preventing pipe freezing in the winter. but, it has been VERY NICE to have instant hot water. I bought an extra sensor valve because a back bathroom as well as the kitchen are quite a ways from the water heater. (About 65 feet to the kitchen, it used to be MINUTES to get hot water!) As you can see with the FLIR thermal images, the sensor valves maintain about 86 degrees. The hot water does NOT just gush through the pipes, removing heat from the water heater tank. Opening a faucet gives you warm water within one second, and the water heats up very fast when it begins flowing. I have the timer set for starting early morning and evenings about dinner-making time. It's great to have immediate warm water for a washcloth or for hand-washing in the bathroom. Cold water is fairly warm, but cools down pretty fast. It's almost the opposite "problem" as you wait for ice cold water now! (The cold pipe is the return to the water heater tank) As of now, in winter, I've set the timer to run every hour for 15 minutes all night long, and off during the day when the house heat is turned up. When the temperature outside drops into the mid teens to single digits, i will flip the pump switch from TIMER to RUN for 24/7 circulation. GONE are the old days of trickling water to prevent freezing during the night and/or sleepless nights worrying about it. In summer, I will go back to morning and evening timer runs only. The system is VERY worthwhile to install, I highly recommend it. My wife LOVES the instant hot water in the bathroom sink in the mornings. No waiting. I even like it for shaving, no more 3 minutes of water running to get it hot.

I spent more time running a new electric line than I did installing the pump, Pump took about 20 Minuets and the sensor about 14, electric took me an hour. I used a shark bite and a flex line out long enough to reach the tank nipple if I have to remove the pump for any reason. I now get warm water for about five seconds and then hot with is nice as I used to wait 25 seconds in the morning for hot water, wasting water and filling up my septic tank. Wife asked why we did not do this before I said you got it now just enjoy. fI also wish we had done this years ago.

I now get hot water is about 5 seconds instead of 3 minutes in our master bathroom. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star was the amount of time and effort it took to get it installed without leaks. Pump installation was straight forward, but it took three tries (finally went with pipe dope and teflon tape) to get it to not leak. The included water lines for the recirculator are good quality but were a cumbersome pain to connect under a sink with very limited access. I went back to HD and bought a longer length with the quick connect feature and I was done in 10 minutes. Just wish I hadn't already spent 2 hours of frustration trying tpo get it installed with the included lines.
