For owners who complain not penetrating the ground and clogging, Are you wetting the ground first? Just not too much or core plugs do not come out.

Yes, I soaked the lawn and had heavy down pours the day before. Please read my review for why this product does not work (i.e., too blunt and too small of an opening).

How big are the plugs?

Asked by Keith May 8, 2015

Small, not more than 2.5 inches long and less then one inch diameter.

I weigh about 190 pounds but have bad knees. Would just my weight be enough to penetrate clay soil or would I have to stomp on the tool?

Will not work for you and could cause injury.

A great tool. I did find that there appeared to be some excess metal from the welding that had dripped into one of the plug holes. I took a round and a square shaped, thin 8" file (see the picture) and scraped the excess metal out of the hole. Even after that, that side plug did not clear out the plugs as easy as did the other side. Aside from that I found this tool to be amazingly terrific. Once I accepted the fact that every single time the plugs were inserted into the ground that the dirt was not always going to rise up smoothly and fall out, things went much better. At first, I tried to clear the plug often, thinking something was wrong with it. That takes a lot of time. There are times when the "terd" shaped dirt will come flying out of one or both sides, and times when nothing comes out. The best option is to just have patience and keep plugging away at it. Even if there are spots where one or both plugs don't push the dirt up and out, the tool always and easily makes good size holes in the ground. I was amazed out how quickly and easily this thing can pierce a solid hole in hard ground. There were times when it seemed like I was able to plug away holes at a rapid pace of every 3 seconds or so. At the end of the day, as I kept on plugging away, I found that that there were more than enough dirt plugs that were emitted all over the ground (see the picture - some are more visible than others). The labor was not overly intensive and I had a bunch of holes spread over more 1000 sq. ft. in about 2 hours or so. You will certainly frustrate yourself if you keep stopping to try and clear the dirt in the plug hole. Just keep pressing and the job will get done. To clear out the plug, I had to take a long, thick screw driver and hammer it out. Water would make it easier to clear it. I am 200 lbs. but anyone can do this even if you wiggle the tool while pushing it deep into hardened ground. For $25, I highly recommend this.

It certainly seems sturdy. I've been aerating my yard with this, pretty much using it as a "shoe" of sorts, walking with the aerator under one foot . It works well to make holes, and 3 days later they're still there, letting water and air come in, helping my grass get stronger. That said, I did notice some annoyance while using it: after a few holes, soil does get trapped in the tube, so you can no longer make holes by coring. You do make holes, but you're not removing soil by "cutting" a core of soil until you clear up the tube. Doing that is not easy, I had to use a screwdriver and water hose to get the soil out. Maybe this aerator could be shipped with a cheap sturdy plastic accessory made to the tube's size so you can "step on it" and push the stuck soil out. Yeah, I can also just buy a long, thing metal bar but the point is not for me to fix this product, but for the company to ship it in a better functioning state. So, overall, happy, but it's not without problems.

This works very well. I wouldn't want to aerate large lawn areas with this, as it only does two holes/cores at a time, and it would take a long time. But it works great for small areas and spot work.

Does not work. Waste of time and money. If you need this product it means your lawn is compacted. But this product will not go into compacted soil because it is so blunt and the opening in the corers (sic?) is too small to bite, essentially turning into a blunt spike aerator, which if you ordered this is exactly what you didn't want in the first place.

mmmmmm. ok, I guess. I have learned to overcome minor difficulties over the years. I live out aways in the county so not feasible to rent an aerator, pick it up and take it back for the small patch of grass I have (22'X25') so I bought this coring aerator. wasn't packaged very well and one of the tines was bent restricting the hole. Fixed that. Handle could be a bit taller but the shape was good. The tool was sturdy. good steel, baked on paint. The tool is pretty picky as to the right amount of moisture needed on lawn to function adequately.Using a drill and wire brush bit inside the two holes, made them smoother inside. When it worked the cores coming out were at least 4 inches. When it didn't, it was so compacted that I had to use several different tools to clean out and use again. Also, change legs that you are pushing down with or you may regret it the next day. Hard headed as I am, I will use this tool again but it's not for the faint of heart.
