Questions & Answers

Do I need to apply Howard Butcher Block Oil first before the conditioner? What the difference?

Asked by: Eyerish
The oil seals the wood and penetrates. The wax/conditioner is basically a top coat the protect against knife cuts. It basically heals itself after a knife is used on it.

How long do I wait to put on a second coat?

It was suggested I use 2 to 3 coats of Butcher Block Conditioner on my BB Island. I used an orbital sander on it first to remove marks (It hadn't been done in years). How long do I wait between coats?
Asked by: Panther
20 minutes or so for the first couple coats. With fresh wood, I did lots of coats and waited a couple hours between the later ones. You might see some areas absorbing more than others.

Customer Reviews

12 oz. Butcher Block Conditioner is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Butcher block counter American cherry Butcher block, cutting boards, wood bowls, are made to be used , unfinished wood products require work new untreated wood needs mineral oil every day for a week, every week for a month and then monthly Howard's applied four times over a four day period will help condition the bare wood, water should bead up so it's easy to wipe off. You always have to sand any bare wood with 220 grade sand paper . This gets the grain open. An orbital sander helps for large areas. It's wood and needs to be treated. This isn't a one and done product. Use it and keep using it . Don't listen to the newbees at the end of this review. I have 45 yr working and finishing bare wood!

I put this on my new cutting board after I applied the mineral oil, and it looks absolutely stunning. What a great glossy look this gave the board, and it was extreamly easy to do. I gave my board about 3 coats, and it dried nicely even without buffing it. This bottle actually goes a long way, and would be able to do 3 boards easily (depending on size). I also love how the knife marks heal after cutting. Just awsome!

I now use this on general wood projects as well as our butcher block counter. Gives a nice feel as well as water protection. We had a burn ring from a hot pot set on the counter and we were able to lightly sand it out and re-apply a couple coats with a good match.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for finishing unfinished wood Was looking for something to finish a wooden box I made and also, restore briar pipes. This stuff is great. Just wipe it on and let sit for 15 mins. - wipe with clean cloth and there you go. Naturally, it absorbs into unfinished wood best. In addition: I wiped it on a pipe stem in order to stop oxidation and after two weeks I can still feel the residual wax on the stem. Last, you can't beat the price. Once you get the corner of a rag saturated with this product, just put it in a plastic bag and you can use it to do quick rubdowns without needing to add any more from the bottle. Really - try it and you'll find dozens of uses for it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to apply This stuff smells good, is easy to apply and quickly breathes life into even old and neglected wood (provided the wood is still worth saving). Take care not to apply too much at a time. Apply using multiple coats if necessary. Already recommended to one student.
