They are not meant to be coupled like that. I seem to remember there is a hook or locking pin for in the hole. For 72 inches the fan will need to be well balanced or it will wobble. You could try a length of black iron pipe and drill a hole emulating the 24" length. I don't know if the fan support is straight cut threads or tapered like plumbing. If straight cut, find a source for rigid electrical conduit.

Short answer yes. Long answer; new threads will have to cut and a hole drilled for a pin on the end with the cut. I don't know if the thread is tapered (NPT) or straight cut (SAE) like used on pipe conduit. If you were going the NPT route I would cut the threads long.
