If you are only going to be digging a couple holes at a time, you should probably go with a simple manual tool. A post-hole digger is almost a necessity for me when doing any landscape project because of the dense layer of yellow clay that lies under the thin layer of topsoil in my yard. This tool's wooden handles are straight-grained and are topped with padded grips; a boon for working without gloves. Another feature that might go unnoticed is a black, plastic stop mounted between the blades. That block of plastic helps to reduce the chance of banging your fists together when opening the digger to empty. The only preparation prior to digging that I did was to sharpen the edges of the scoop to better cut through any small roots that I could encounter and to lube the scoop's pivot point.
I like the finish on the wood handles of this post hole digger. The finish is a clear coat over a stained wood grain finish. I tested the metal parts with a magnet and the black painted metal, and the bolts, and the nuts were all attracted to the magnet. I weighed the post hole digger on my scale and it weighed in at 7.2 pounds. I measured the post hole digger with my tape measured and it measured 57 inches in overall length. Overall, this is a nice post hole digger.
This is an outstanding post hole digger made by Husky Tools. The wooden handles have what appears to be a polyurethane finish with a cushion grip. They operate smoothly and have a good range of motion The blades are very sharp and cut through my dense clay soil fairly easily. The blades are also a good size and can scoop a fair amount of soil. The digger is heavy enough that a good thrust will plunge it easily into the ground. It also comes with a "lifetime warranty".
This is an excellent post hole digger; it has thick eucalyptus hardwood handles which are stained yellowish orange and varnished. A hard rubber safety spacer in the bottom keeps it from closing too far and pinching your hands. The thick rubberized grips at the top of the handles make it easy to grab and hold onto as you open, dig, close and then open and release the dirt. The handles are rounded at the top where the grips are, but square at the bottom of the tool to give it extra width and strength where it is bolted to the blades. A bonus according to the label is the tool has a lifetime warranty on it. It is made with quality materials so it will be around a long time.
I lost my old post hole digger in a wildfire last summer. Come springtime I have some holes to dig for gates that also need replacing. This looks like just the thing I need. The handles are 47" long and the overall length is about 60" which is a good length for handling and will make digging the depth of holes that I need relatively easy. The measurement across the blades is 5-1/2 inches. The steel digging blades are about 5/64" thick steel. The rubber grips on the wood handles are a nice extra. I would say this is an excellent medium duty digger and will dig holes for all the posts I need to replace. The stop block will prevent mashing one's fingers, another nice feature. The hardware is plated, the blades are painted, and the wood is sealed/stained.
The Husky 47-inch post hole digger is a great tool when needing to dig a hole for a post or shrubs. Unlike a shovel which creates an ever-widening hole the deeper you go, the hole digger is able to create a 5.5 inch diameter circular opening to the desired depth. From top of the handle to blade tip it measures 57 inches. The clam shell allows for about 8 inches of material to be scooped out.
The wood handles have a hard grip handle, while the unknow wood species is covered in what appears to be slapped on varnish. It feels rough to the touch and the transition from round to square handle is a bit crude. There are no measurement marking on the side of the handles. The clam shell blades are held in place with two fasteners. Unfortunately, the bolt protrudes enough to be a snag hazard. The fastener holding the clam shells together can be removed, so the handles and clam shells can be replaced. As this is a Husky product with a lifetime warranty that might be unnecessary. The clam shell edge has been rounded with no sharp or jagged edges.
In use I was quickly able to dig a hole for a post. This tool requires some upper body strength to make quick work of digging holes. My wet soil tended to stick to the blades and perhaps in the future I will spray some Teflon on them. I will be adding measurements to the sides of the handle to quickly determine the depth of the hole, and perhaps turn the protruding fasteners around, otherwise this tool got the job done quickly without making a wide hole. To avoid rusting wash off soil and spray on water repellent on clam shells.
This Husky 47 inch long post hole digger with wooden handles and grips will be the perfect tool to use to add a post to your yard. It is sturdy and not too heavy but precise for hole digging. The “blades” are nicely tapered and should dig into the earth smoothly. The wood handles makes this tool almost decorative. I would recommend this hole digger.
Ordered the post hole digger for fence repair and landscaping. I like the padded grips on the handle for cushion and better grip. Also like the sealer on the wood handles to extend service life and the tempered steel blades that do a good job cutting through dirt and small tree roots. Also like the spacer between the handles that keeps the blades fully open but pointing out each side. The tool is about the right length and weight for its purpose. The limited lifetime warranty through the store is also hard to beat.
Over the years I have been very happy with the performance of Husky brand products. This 47-in. post hole digger is no exception. The tool appears to be well-constructed and comes with foam grips that ease the friction and stress on the palms of your hands. The tool works well in digging/boring into the ground and then removing the material from the hole. This is one of the tools every homeowner/DIYer needs to have ready for immediate use when a situation arises requiring its unique capabilities. In my opinion, this tool is so well-built I expect it will last a lifetime. I will then pass it on to my grandchildren. See attached photos. Once again, well-done HUSKY!
This is a very easy to use post hole digger. I've used many of these in my life. This is well built and good quality. There is a really cool feature at the pivot point. There is a small block that prevents the handles from fully collapsing towards each other. In other words it's a knuckle saver. The cushions are just right and allow control with comfort. Highly recommended
