Fairly Easy to Install
I’m a 25yr old female, and was able to replace my old disposal with this one, by myself. So, hopefully that shows it’s pretty simple to install. It was the exact same one I had prior - so it was kind of just plug and play. I did need to go buy a new electrical plug to attach to the new disposal, because it doesn’t come with one and the cord on my old one was impossible to take out and also just wanted a new cord. I also needed to buy a flexible discharge tube, because the tube it comes with is curved and I needed a straight one (the flexible one was perfect because I could adjust how long it needed to be).

    Beware of this garbage disposal
After only 3 years, my disposal started leaking from the bottom. This was the 3rd Insinkerator disposal in 14 years so I decided to take this one apart before buying another. Insinkerator advertises the chopping area is galvanized, but once the galvanization wears off, the steel quickly rusts. This happen to mine so severely that it rusted a hole that allowed water to get into the motor compartment (see the blue circled area in the picture). No more "galvanized" and no more Insinkerator!

Hi SteveE, thanks for posting your review. We understand how unpleasant this experience must have been for you and we're sorry. Rust is something we generally consider normal wear and tear. The grinding components on our standard Badger Series are coated with corrosion resistant zinc and do not begin to discolor until this coating wears away. The amount of rust varies and is dependent on usage and what may have been put through the disposer. The water quality, use of aggressive cleaning solutions, or even grinding of acidic foods can speed up discoloration. We're always working hard to improve our products and we value your candid feedback.

      Repalcement Product Disposal
I've utilized InSinkErator for over 25 years, primarily as a maintenance person in large and small apartment complexes. These products have met and passed the expectation of the aforementioned facilities and occupants served. The recent purchased was replacement for 20 plus year old disposal which was InSinkErator, replacement was easily installed utilizing new connector hub. Additionally making connection to existing plumbing and electrical was also easy. I would recommend this product to most home owners and the replacement model is very quit.

        Rusting after 8 months
InSinkErator said, "This is not rust in the sense that it will compromise the structural integrity of the unit, it is more of a reddish colored thin film." Well, rust is rust, and this should not be happening after just 8 months of use.

Hi HDCustomer, thank you for sharing your feedback. The amount of rust or discoloration varies and is dependent on usage and what may have been put through the disposer. The water quality, use of aggressive cleaning solutions, or even grinding of acidic foods can speed up discoloration. Grinding components with brown discoloration or surface rust is normal and simply cosmetic. Rust will not degrade the performance of the disposer unless it is well outside of the disposer's lifespan. If you still have other concerns or questions, you can reach us at https://support.insinkerator.com/app/ask.

          Rusts and Leaks
Very disappointed in this product, have had previous insikerator model which lasted many years. When the motor burned out, I purchased it again thinking the build quality would be the same, it's not. Only after 4 years of very light use started leaking from the bottom due to rust, even though the unit functions fine. Called customer service they gave be a coupon for 40% off of a new unit, no thank you. Switched over to Everbilt 1/2 horsepower with a 4 yr warranty and lifetime corrosion warranty for half the price.

Hi Faizi, we appreciate you sharing your feedback with us. Just as is expected with other small home appliances, the life of an InSinkErator® Disposer is entirely dependent upon service conditions, usage patterns, and water quality. The amount of rust or discoloration varies and is dependent on usage and what may have been put through the disposer. Rust will not degrade the performance of the disposer unless it is well outside of the disposer's lifespan. We’re sorry to see you go, but we completely understand how upset you must feel. We hope you’ll consider InSinkErator again in the future.

You will have to replace soon
If you like replacing garbage disposals, this may be the one for you. Despite not using it a ton it died before the 2 year mark.

              Good so far
So far so good. I thought that since this unit was the lower unit that it would be weak and break easily, but it is holding up. It’s a good device.

Using it for one month and no issues. My grandchildren are a good test of endurance for this product and it past. Thank you for being there for us. Great product. Quiet also.

                  Not a Quality Product
So our builder installed the badger 1-87 in our new house. 4 years later & it’s dead. Not a good quality product, I guess that’s why they only have a 1 year warranty on it.

My InSinkErator Badger 500 1/2 hp garbage disposal only lasted for 10 month.
I bought this Badger 500 1/2 hp online on September 29 2013 from Homedepot (HD), received it on Oct. 2 2013 and since then had stored it at home as an emergence replacement. When my last one suddenly failed on October 30 2019, I put on this one on October 31 2019. Today, it's Aug 23 2020, I suddenly saw a full bowl of water (in the photo [fig1], I already dumped the water from the bowl but you still can tell water leak from two screws [fig2,fig3]) under the sink and overflowed onto the plastic cloth under the bowl. Fortunately, I always put an open plastic container under the disposal for I am always prepared for the worse situation. So this one only lasted for 10 months. Because I bought it from HD in Oct 2013 but didn't install it until October 31 2019, so I even don't know how to go about claiming that three year warranty. Maybe this one is a lemon one? I put my review here to let people know the quality of Badger 500 1/2 hp. Very disappointed with InSinkErator Badger 500. I still have my original electronic order receipt. The email hidden from the public is my HD account name so you can find all my contact.

The life of an InSinkErator® Disposer is entirely dependent upon service conditions and usage patterns, just as is expected with other small home appliances.
