Q:I have purchased a Blanco silgranite sink with a matching flange for the disposer will there be any problem using that with an In Sink Erator disposal?
by|May 29, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello beje! Thanks for reaching out to us. There are no limitations as to what type of sinks our units can be installed on. A disposer will fit a single bowl or half bowl, stainless steel, or other material. The standard 3.5-inch (90mm) sink opening is ideal, and the disposer comes with an attachment for that size. However, we can't confirm the compatibility of the matching sink flange you have as we do not test our products for compatibility with other manufacturer's parts and products, so we cannot speak to the expected performance when used together. For best results, we recommend you use InSinkErator parts and accessories with InSinkErator units. For your convenience, you may find a finish that will match your sink at this link: https://shorturl.at/hmtN9. If you require any additional assistance, please contact us at https://support.insinkerator.com/app/ask.

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi MommaT, thanks for reaching out! We offer a wide variety of models, whether you want to focus on noise, grind power, or your budget. Our standard Badger line offers basic grinding and sound features using robust galvanized grinding components, varying horsepower, and warranties. Our Evolution line offers the best sound and grinding capabilities, stainless steel grinding components, varying horsepower, and generally longer warranties.

A:  No. Garbage disposals like the insinkerator are a recent development, and to my understanding a fairly American invention. It used to be you would have a way to filter all the stuff out of your water with a drain strainer in your sink drain hole. Millions of sinks are still setup this way.

        by|May 1, 2023

A:  I like mine! It’s sturdy and chops stuff up well.

A:  Hello, Patti! We're glad you've reached out to us. There is no Badger 3 model available. You may have a Badger 5 disposal, which has the same characteristics as the Badger 500. Rusts out fast!
The motor works fine and the install is easy. Unfortunately, this is the 2nd Badger 500 unit that rusted completely out and caused to leak down into the electrical compartment and out into the cabinet below. Clearly a manufacturing defect. This part should NOT rust so fast. Learned my lesson. Won't be replacing with this brand again or from Home Depot. It's not budget or earth friendly if it won't last. Truly a waste of a motor and other parts nearly new that continue to fill landfills.

Hi JustLP, thanks for leaving your comments, and we’re sorry to hear about your Badger 500 that rusted. Exposure to water that sometimes appears to be coming from the bottom but might be coming from a higher place, like the mounting assembly is likely the cause of the rust. Additionally, our disposers can usually be recycled at a metal recycling center. The typical InSinkErator disposer is constructed of 80% metal, which can readily be recycled by a scrap metal dealer. If we can do anything else for you, feel free to reach us at https://support.insinkerator.com/app/ask.
Wish they used more stainless steel to extend life
Installing my 3rd Badger 500 in 6 years due to leaking from corrosion (avg life 2 years). I bought the 2 year replacement warranty this time for $18. You can see how well the stainless grinders hold up compared to the thin galvanized steel. Insinkerator claims a life of 6-8 years which I would be fine with but 2 years is too short. I understand they are watching cost, but I have no problem paying a little more if they just replaced this one part with stainless steel that corrodes quickly.

Hi Joseph, thanks for sharing your experience with us. The amount of rust or discoloration varies and is dependent on usage and what may have been put through the disposer. The water quality, use of aggressive cleaning solutions, or even grinding of acidic foods can speed up discoloration. The life of an InSinkErator® Disposer is entirely dependent upon service conditions and usage patterns, just as is expected with other small home appliances. If you need further assistance, please contact us via https://support.insinkerator.com/app/ask.

Works great, but quickly destroyed by corrosion
Replaced my original unit that lasted a little more than one year. Replaced unit started leaking. Originally thought it was a leaking motor seal. However, discovered the base of the ginding housing had corroded through. (see photo). Also, the chopping rotor was badly rusted. (see photo). However, the motor module unit was in like new condition! (see photo). Quite a shame to throw away a perfectly good motor module because of bad material choice for other parts of the disposal. With proper corrosion resistant material choice, these disposals would have a very long life.

                  Response from InSinkEratorNov 22, 2022
Hello JohnFB, thanks for your feedback. We're sorry to hear about your recent experience with Badger 500 disposer. Based on your disposer model, the components are made of galvanized steel which are coated with corrosion resistant zinc and do not begin to discolor until this coating wears away. Moreover, the life of an InSinkErator® Disposer is entirely dependent upon service conditions and usage patterns, just as is expected with other small home appliances. Grinding components with brown discoloration or surface rust is normal and simply cosmetic. This is not rust in the sense that it will compromise the structural integrity of the unit, it is more of a reddish colored thin film. If there is severe rust/corrosion well before the disposer's expected life span, it's possible that water is sitting in the disposer due to improper plumbing. For further assistance you can contact us via https://support.insinkerator.com/app/ask. We hope this helps.

Rusted-out holes caused leaking in bottom
This might not be fair, because the unit only has a three-year warranty, and ours lasted almost six years. The galvanized steel grinders were fine, but the rest of the metal chamber turned to rust with holes that caused water to leak through the unit and come out the bottom. Electrical components are near the bottom, so I'm glad it did leak out and not cause the breaker to trip. I'll be looking into a higher-quality unit for the next one.

Hi JohnC, thanks for sharing your comments. Rust is something we generally consider normal wear and tear. The amount of rust varies and is dependent on usage and what may have been put through the disposer. After the disposer's expected lifespan, which is 6-8 years on average, you may begin to see flaking and scale rust form. That's when the rust starts to interfere with the operation of the product. The water quality, use of aggressive cleaning solutions, or even grinding of acidic foods can cause this. We're sorry for the inconvenience this experience has caused you. We're always working hard to improve our products and your feedback is very valuable to us.

The standard in in-sink garbage disposals
The upside: The insinkerator is the standard. I think this is that the motor-shaft goes all the way through, and thus when it jams, a hex-wrench inserted in the bottom will fix it. The downside: I bought the new unit as a replacement for basically the same model of insikerator that was already there, the reason was that the old Insinkerator Badger 5 had rusted all the way through. With water running, a good part would run out of the box where the electrical cord is connected, and into the cabinet beneath the sink. In the future, I will try to monitor this a bit better, the cabinet bottom is ruined. My son wanted to see how it looks inside, see the attached picture. Obviously some parts are more rust-proof than others.

Quality product at a great price.
I bought this unit because my old Insinkerator had stopped functioning. The old unit dated back to January 2001. based on literature I found in my cabinet when I purchased my condo. I had the new Badger 500 Food Waste Disposer installed in less than 30 minutes. It was a direct replacement for the old unit. Thus far I am very happy with the new unit.

                            They rust out quite fast+
I own 3 homes & I seem to constantly be replacing these darn Badger disposals cuz they just rust out so fast, always just out of warranty of course. Cheaper than high end ones, but they sure dont last very long. If you buy at the big box stores, be sure tonget the extra warranty cuz you'll be needing it & absolutely keep a big drip tray under there, cuz its just a matter of time, so there's my confidence in this product. I'll share my images of the warped wood under my new cabinets from my 3 year old leaky disposal that the bottom rusted out of.
