We typically recommend the 1/4" HardieBacker board for floor applications, but the HardieBacker 500 and HydroDefence can be used if you need to make up additional thickness.
Our backer board can be used with any tile weight 15 pounds per square foot or less when used with the required polymer modified thin-set which complies with ANSI A118.4.
The board is a nominal 1/2" and it's exact thickness matches to the tapered mud edge of a 1/2" gypsum board.
We require the use of a ANSI A118.4 modified thin-set mortar for adhering tile to the backer board. You would have to double check with either the manufacture or the container to see if the thin-set you intend to use meets ANSI A118.4
No, we require it to nailed or screwed to the wall. We would require wood or metal furring installed to the wall if there is no framing.
The only offering with the integrated HydroDefence coating is on our thicker backer boards, we do not offer a 1/4" version at this time.
Yes, HardieBacker board can be used as substrate for kitchen backsplash tile.
