Q:I plan to use these for a school project. How many pellets do I need to fill a 3" pot?

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your question. We would estimate 4-5 pellets to fill a 3" pot however that could vary based on depth. We would recommend considering our Jiffy Seed Starting Mix 12 qt bag or sku 1004685325. With it one can fill up to 22 of our Jiffy 3" round peat pots. In hopes this helps and if you have further questions don't hesitate to reach out to our customer service team at 508.285.5800. Our best to you and your students in the school project!

A:  Why would you use these in a pot? Just put a seed starting mix in it.

      Answer This Question

A:  Yes. Drop the pellet into warm warm, it will puff up. This is used as a seed starter. Once your plant has taken root, you will need to transfer it to a pot or flowerbed.

A:  Thank you for your question. The Jiffy Peat Pellet can be used as a substitute. We recommend placing the pellets in a tray, apply warm water, let expand and then place in garden ensuring the netting covers the bottom and side walls. If not the peat can get into your pump and possibly clog. Note the netting will start to biodegrade after a few months. Based on model you may have to trim and remove some of the pellet to fit. Another option and you won't have to worry about clogging the pump is to use a coco coir based medium. This medium does not perform as well as a Peat based medium when used to grow seeds/plants but will work. Our best to you this season.

          Answer This Question

A:  I think so. They're made from peat and most if not all kinds of seeds can put on top of the disk.

          by|Jun 6, 2021

A:  Hi Faith, I would think so since the pellets are for seed starting. I would suggest giving the pellets a try. Good luck with your succulents and seeds.

            Over 280 pellets failed
A few years ago I bought 2 of the 72 Peat Pellet Pro Seed Starting Greenhouses & followed the instructions to a T. Not one seedling came up. This year I figured I would try them again thinking they must have improved… Once again I bought 2 Peat Pellet Pro Seed Starting Greenhouses, this time with “SUPERthrive” and tried my luck again. Although I usually have a green thumb, once again I could not get them to grow. Of over 200 seeds planted, I got one cucumber and two Cypress seeds to germinate.

I love this when starting seeds. It also fits perfectly on a 2" netcups when using it on hydroponics. One tip though, you need to cut at least 4 slits on the bottom for the roots before I even place seeds on it. Yes, roots will go thru the net but I believe the net restricts its growth. I tried ones to plant it directly on soil and the growth is so slow compared to the one on hydroponics--I mean really slow about 3" less. I think it would have been better if I cut a slit at the bottom or completly cut the bottomnet off. Good job Home Depot for having the best price I've seen, their prices is a lot lower than Amazon.

Ready to plant seeds early? Ideal to use for early sowing, under light, in trays. I started tomatoe and beans from these pods. Easy to show in garden when seedlings are hardened a few days outdoors. Ordered online and picked up in my local store. I'll do this again.

Very easy to use. You will get almost 100% germination if you have bottom heat and light. The photo I show is of 8 pellets that fit perfectly into a Garland tray. The plants are trailing Petunias (Nuvolari), they are this size in just a matter of weeks. When the pellets fill out with roots I transplant into 4" pots and grow them on inside under light until the last frost.

              Root Bound
I began noticing that many plants I started in these would be greatly stunted. At the end of the season I began digging some of them up and found that the pellets had not broken down. Roots had fought to grow through them and were barely getting through. The next year my brother and I did our own tests, putting half the seeds in these pods and half in the soil. Most of the plants would be double the size of the peat pellet pods. My brother has a degree in horticulture as well, and swears these things are from the devil. Thought I think that’s a big extreme. Bottom line, I would not recommend these.
