Answer This Question

Will this cover smoke on the wall from burning a pot on the stove. How long do I wait to paint the color over it.
ByJul 6, 2026

Answer This Question

Hi Regina, thank you for your question. Kilz 2 Primer will cover light stains. If you're covering a tough stain, then it is best to use a stronger stain-blocking primer such as the oil-based Kilz Original or water-based Kilz Restoration. After priming, you can topcoat in one hour or more with the paint of your choice. Good luck with your project! -Giovanna

        Answer This Question

Hi Mary, Thank you for your question. Our Kilz 2 Primer is designed to seal over light to medium stains, so it isn't recommended for blocking heavy stains such as smoke stains. Instead, I recommend checking out our Restoration Primer. It's designed to block heavy stains and smoke-related odors. If you have other questions or concerns, please reach out to us directly; we are always happy to help. -Alex

              Answer This Question

Hi Charles, thanks for the question. Our Kilz 2 Primer isn't an odor-blocking primer. Instead, I'd suggest using our Restoration Primer or Kilz Original Oil-Based Primer for sealing in the pet odors on the subfloor. If you have additional questions about your project, please reach out to us directly. Our customer care team is happy to help. -Ronald

                  worthless product
this stuff will cost you more time. I used it as directed then painted, NOW i have to paint again. It didn't cover and can see right thru it. I ran out and used a Benjamin moore primer. I did much better and don't have to repaint that. I will never use this product again and would suggest no one use it.

                  Response from KILZProblemSolverJun 22, 2026
Hi there, thank you for the review. I'm sorry to hear that our Kilz 2 Primer didn't cover over the stains as expected. The Kilz 2 primer is designed to seal in stains, it may not completely cover them. Since paint has more solids than primers, it should cover the existing color/stains once the surface has been primed. The primer should stop the stains from bleeding through to your topcoat. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance; our customer care team is happy to help you! -Ronald Kilz
This is a great product that we've been using as we renovate and paint some rooms. It covers really well, even with darker base colors and that we've needed to cover, and gives a good base coat/primer to work from. It exceeds our expectations and we highly recommend it!

I'm in the process of cleaning up a bathroom and had to sand and skim coat the celling and re-texture the walls. Kilz 2 worked out great in covering all the repair and the texture spray. Kilz 2 covered my repairs completely, very low odor, and dried quickly.

                    blocks the Stain
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this to block the stains coming through the 120+ year old redwood beams is my basement. Water stains from the kitchen were almost impossible to extinguish. Kilz to the rescue.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I just used two gallons of grey Kilz 2 on previously stained beams and tongue n groove. Great coverage with no bleed through. Including before and After pics

I purchased a new cabinet but wanted to paint the outside of it in black. Well, the paint would not adhere to it. I purchased the kilz primer and it covered great after a couple coats. Then I was able to simply paint it black and it really looked great!

                        It will cover polyurethane!!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The interior of my house was all stained pine covered in polyurethane. It looked like an ugly orange log cabin. Sanding down the whole house would have taken weeks, so we figured we would give kill a try and see if it would stick to the polyurethane and allow us to paint over it. The Kills worked fantastic. I was able to spray the whole house with Kills all purpose in a day. It covered the polyurethane perfectly and allowed me to paint the house in a more current color palette. I only have pictures of the gray room, but the whole house looks great.

Seriously - Read this - I saw the name Kilz and thought it will be great - it is not
Wow - what a surprise - 11 days after priming a built in bookcase (not my first rodeo) and put paint sample colors up with painters tape and the tape lifted the primer! What the what!!?? Granted $17 for a two gallon Home Depot bucket - you get what you pay for! Lesson learned no bargain here!! The first time I used Kilz was in 1991 at my first home due to nicotine stains being heinous on the house walls - worked beautifully. Several years ago painted with Kilz to cover dark paint - no issue - this “exclusive to Home Depot” version - don’t bother! I’m just hoping if I re prime that I now don’t have a “lift layer” from the old color to the future color - it’s a 17 foot long wall with built in shelves . . . Wish me luck!

Hello, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the painter's tape removed the primers. That's not normal, and I can understand your disappointment. To fix this, I recommend sanding off the loose primer, cleaning the surface, and touching up. To improve adhesion of the primer, I recommend scuff sanding the surface. I would also recommend using low-adhesion tape for freshly painted surfaces. We appreciate you sharing your feedback with us. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance. Our Customer Care team is happy to help! -Giovanna Kilz
