difference between K-8799-VS and K-R8799-C-VS
K-8799-VS is made in the USA (see embossed "USA" in photo). K-R8799-C-VS is made in China (see ink stamp in photo), USA version has a more rugged appearing base. No visual difference in the upper portions. Functional differences unknown.

Bought the black in May it’s September and the paint already chipping. I thought buy expensive it’ll last long time. Nope. Probably past being able to return. So aggravating.

Hi Popwell, this is Sarah with Kohler Co. I'm sorry to hear your Duostrainer is chipping. The Kohler Faucet cleaner can be used to keep your drain clean. Using any other cleaner that has not been tested on the basket could potentially cause damage to the finish. Please email us a photo of your basket along with details on how the basket is cleaned. We are here to help! -Sarah S. Kohler Customer Service

The install was easy and the product is a good quality stainless steel unlike some of the cheaper competitors. The seal on the strainer basket is not very good and wont hold water in the sink which is why I am rating this lower. Overall, it is still an upgrade to my sink.

Looks Beautiful But Will Scratch if Not Careful
This is your top of the line Drain Assembly. Since I was redoing my kitchen myself I decided to splurge on a $50 name brand product. The strainer/drain assembly is beautiful. Instructions were clear. It comes with a thick metal washer that goes between the body and gasket with rubber seal but I did not use it because it wouldn't fit on my farmhouse sink. Washers are used for a tight fit and so you dont run out of threading on the gasket. That wasnt an issue for me. Make sure that you PROPERLY thread the gasket underneath before tightening the screws. I had that gasket pop off twice when I thought I had it threaded correctly. Also either get a tool or find a way for someone to hold body when tightening on the gasket. The rotating of the body left a scrape ring around my sink. I was able to cover the strainer just right though. Just an FYI make sure you use a huge ring of plumber's putty that goes right up to the threads of the body. You want the putty oozing out of both sides for a tight seal. If you have a white sink like me, dont worry. I used a plastic knife to cleanly scrape away the extra in the sink. I then finished off with some Q tips to get the putty hidden up to the edge. No leaks at all. I would get this product again even with the install learning curve here.

        Bad Quality, wasted my time
I am a handy man, I bought two of the $50 kohler strainer as a good brand for my kitchen sink but first I found it made in China while 1/3 of its price I would buy another brand made in US. I was shocked when I was installing the second one the 3 lock screws were not going through, I unwind the ring and tried to put the screws outside and looked at the three holes they don't have . They punched the holes and never made threads for screws just a blind hole. I bought the Faucet and all accessories from Kohler but I will return all of that and buy a trust worthy brand. Never recommend

Looks great, but doesn't seal. So what's the point?
I should have read the reviews before buying this... The little piece on my old Kohler straining basket broke. More specifically, the little piece with two slots that allows the plunger to sit up high or drop down low broke loose from the basket. A new basket looks like this little piece isn't held on any better than the old one was. Also, the new basket did not seal well against my old drain. So I bought the whole new Duostrainer. Besides, a new stainless drain would look nice. Installation was easy enough, but I wasn't fond of the retaining ring that holds the drain in place against the sink bottom. The Kohler one is just aluminum with three small screws that push up against a ring and gasket (see picture in Rock Nobster's review). I would prefer the brass ring that screws tight like used in "The Plumber's Choice Kohler Drain (https://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Plumber-s-Choice-3-1-2-in-4-in-Heavy-Duty-Kitchen-Sink-Stainless-Steel-Drain-Assembly-with-Strainer-Basket-KOHLER-Style-Stopper-ESS3157/303759505). The real frustration came when I tested it. The basket does NOT seal!! Water drains fairly quickly as the basket doesn't sit very well into the drain. I think the O-ring may be a little to thick. The basket actually seals better WITHOUT the O-ring. Go figure. Then I went back to HD website and read similar reviews. I should have read the reviews before buying this...

Glenn, my name is Jessica with Kohler Customer Service. I am sorry to hear your new drain basket is not functioning as it should. This is nothing you should expect when you choose Kohler. We would like to make a suggestion that we feel will help to improve the performance of your drain. Please remove the O-ring from the basket and place the basket/strainer back in the drain body that way. This will give the basket/strainer the proper seal it needs. If the leaking no longer occurs, please continue to use the drain this way. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please contact our Customer Service team at KohlerCustServ@kohler.com. We're happy to help! - Jessica P. Kohler Customer Service.

            I really like this strainer
It look and feels solid and well made. I don't ever use the stopper to make the sink hold water but I have noticed that if I try to lower the stopper while the whole strainer basket is in the sink it leaks but if you take the entire strainer basket out of the sink then set the stopper to the lowest position and drop the whole unit back in it doesn't leak.

Not cheap but the adage "you get what you pay for" applies well to this product. The heft suggests a quality build and I wouldn't disagree. Even more impressive is the installation design. Superior engineering to say the least, virtually fool-proof installation. No specialty tools needed. Installs quickly. In use now for about a month and not a drip to be found. And finally, the basket works well when needing to fill the sink (no draining until the basket is removed).
