Q:Why are the sinks getting hairline/stress cracks?, and how do you fix them? Every one of these sinks have this problem. Seems to be a manufacturer defect.

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Fred, this is Sarah with Kohler Customer Service. I am glad to address your question. Crazing (hairline stress cracks) is caused by tensile stresses greater than the glaze is able to withstand. A craze pattern can develop at any time in the lavatory’s life. Causes that are most often related to the development of crazing include: size of the piece, temperature changes, humidity changes, vibration (as in moving the piece often), and the age of the piece. Crazing occurs in the manufacture of vitreous china products regardless of manufacturer. Very specific efforts have been made to reduce the frequency of crazing occurrence; we expect your product experience to be greatly improved. Thank you for choosing Kohler.

            Spider Vein Cracks
The Kohler Memoirs pedestal sink is simple elegance and never looks dated. It is easy to clean BUT mine has also developed the spider vein cracks or 'crazing" so many of the others have mentioned. Over the last year I noticed a slight movement/rock which is probably the problem as mentioned in the many responses caused by vibrations. I am in the process of replacing my Kohler Memoirs pedestal sink BUT I will not take the chance of a repeat occurance and will purchase another product.

Another customer with a lot of crazing
Our sink is more than a year old so Kohler held strong to their warranty limits but buyer beware that this sink seems to have a defect in that will cause crazing. It hasn't made the sink unusable, but it certainly doesn't look good and I would NOT put it in a bathroom that guests use. Ultimately, why bother with this one? Even if you like the look, you won't after a little while and you'll be stuck with it. Just buy a different sink.

                  Crazing is disturbing!
I too have crazing. Looks like there is constantly pieces of black hair. I see you respond to everyone with the same boiler plate response. I am beyond disappointed.

Lovely Memoirs 24” Pedestal Fireclay Bathroom sink and matching toilet
I bought this 2 months ago to replace an older broken sink. I’m so pleased with both function and elegant but simple look. A new Koehler Sink & Toilet nicely compliment the fixtures that have been in place for 17 years as well as a newly installed shower and floor.

                    Bathroom Sink Developing Cracks
Our Kohler bathroom sink has many fine line cracks in the bowl and outer rim. We have owned this sink for many years; however, over the past year we have noticed these cracks developing in the sink that have only spread over that period of time. I am attaching several photos of this cracking. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in explaining what is causing this issue and how to fix this problem.

Hello Charmoni, my name is Kassi with Kohler Co. I am sorry to hear that your Memoirs sink is cracking. A number of things can cause this crazing crack that you see. This can include wear and tear, impact, moisture, and/or any flexing of the sink. While these cracks are cosmetic, they are not structural, and do not compromise the integrity of the sink's construction. Any vitreous china product that is a glazed pottery is subject to crazing regardless of the maker. Crazing is caused by tensile stresses greater than the glaze is able to withstand. A craze pattern can develop at any time in the lavatory’s life. Causes that are most often related to the development of crazing include: size of the piece, temperature changes, humidity changes, vibration (as in moving the piece often), and the age of the piece. We can assure you that very specific, ongoing, efforts have been made to reduce the frequency of crazing occurrence in all our vitreous china products. The warranty is one year on all vitreous china lavatories; however, if the product does show cracking, we examine each sink on a case by case basis to determine if the crack is due to crazing or damage. Please contact our customer service at 1-800-456-4537 M-F from 8AM-5PM CST so we may gather more information. We look forward to hearing from you! – Kassi D., Kohler Customer Service

The sink looks beautiful, but I had to deburr the drain and the hot-supply-value holes with a rotary tool. The included foam stick-on “gaskets” are not usable for leveling the sink and pedestal since the foam cannot take any real weight (they just flatten to the thickness of paper). The hanger bolt nuts will hit just about any hot-cold valve stems you install. So install and removal is a two part process where you loosen the nut, slide the sink partly away from the wall, then finish threading the hanger nuts on-or-off. Once you figure those items out, the sink is not too difficult to work with. Some parts of the sink are not perfectly square (ie the front edge has a minor waviness to it) but it still looks fine. Overall I really like this sink.

                      Classic, simple, timeless beauty
We needed a pedestal sink for our bathroom remodel project, and I kept coming back to this one in my research. I purchased it for delivery, it arrived to my home a few days later, we installed it, and it is just gorgeous! I'm so happy with it. My favorite feature is the wide edges all the way around the basin. It's a pretty tall item, so probably not the best for shorter people or children's bathrooms but that's not an issue in our home.

Georgious Sink, Timeless and matches most anything
I have worked in historical buildings and seen these Kohler sinks with date codes in the 1930's still in use in commercial environments and thought I would only need to buy one, Mine and it seems a bunch of others have hairline cracks in the glazing near the overflow drain.
